* FaceOfTheBand: It goes without saying that he's this to the Devin Townsend Project. He was also the most well known member of Strapping Young Lad, though Gene Hoglan gets a lot of attention, too, due to him being considered a god among drummers. Jed Simon seems to be liked by fans since he's the only member of the band who Devin is still in touch with. No one ever really took much notice of Byron Stroud.

* ToughLove: Devin's manager Andy Farrow had to do a lot of this to him to get him out of his latest CreatorBreakdown. He describes it in detail in his interview with Wrestling/ChrisJericho.
* TrueArtIsAngsty: Strapping Young Lad is his heaviest work both musically and lyrically, expressing his frustration with record companies, people in the music industry, social anxiety, emotional insecurity, drugs, relationships, society, etc. and continues to be some of his most revered work to this day. Increasingly subverted as the years go by since his lighter, more optimistic work outside of SYL has also received praise.
** It's subverted actually. While his real life angst influenced much of Strapping Young Lad's music, Devin also frequently mixed in a morbid, tongue-in-check sense of humor which becomes especially evident during live performances. The band was never meant to be entirely serious. The albums "Heavy As a Really Heavy Thing" and "The New Black" represent this the best. Not to mention, there's still a decent amount of angst in his solo work even after disbanding SYL though not nearly as aggressive and upfront about it.

** From ''Music/DarkMatters'', "March of the Poozers" is a ludicrously catchy yet heavy song.

* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: While he does have a decent sized fanbase in America, he's '''far''' more popular in Europe. (Particularly in the UK).

** "Funeral", his reaction to the senseless murder of one of his classmates, Jesse Cadman. It doesn't actually ''sound'' all that depressing until you listen to the lyrics. "He was killed walking home by a group of kids that wanted his hat," Devin recalled. Although he and Jesse weren't close friends, he was a close friend of Jesse's sister, and Devin was asked to speak at the funeral. "I remember I hadn't anticipated they were gonna bring the body out, and I just panicked. I couldn't cope with it, and I wasn't alone in that, either. It was a real heavy time for a lot of people, because it was our first experience with that sort of thing, and it was senseless."

** "Kingdom", in part due to Devin's ability to go seamlessly from clean operatic singing to his ''insane'' MetalScream. "Deadhead" also has excellent examples of this.

** Remarkably, he's not a formally trained singer, meaning he developed his technique ''on his own''. You can find interviews with him where vocal coaches analyse all the techniques he uses, and his response is basically, "I dunno, man. I just do what sounds good."

Political ROCEJ

* HilariousInHindsight or FunnyAneurysmMoment: Perhaps depending upon one's political views, the lines "You're a puppet / I am a puppet / We are all puppets" from "Color Your World" can be examples of one or the other after the infamous "No puppet! No puppet! You're the puppet!" exchange from Donald Trump's debates with Hillary Clinton.

* CrazyAwesome: Oh yes. Having lots of [[CreatorBreakdown breakdowns]] during his career and being able to survive through every one of them? Check. [[CursedWithAwesome Channeling his mental problems torward his music and making them awesome]]? Check. (Seemingly) getting rid of his drug problems and some mental illnesses and finding out his songs can be even more awesome when his mind is clearer? Check. And showing us that's true? Check. Devin Townsend had a career of 16 albums he produced himself, including Ziltoid The Omniscient, on which he has done almost EVERYTHING, including the 5+ voices featured, and more are on the way. Oh, and he has bipolar disorder.
** His set up for the ''Quarantine Concert series'' takes the cake: Setting up four different cameras, including one strapped to a broken desk fan that shows the entire room, and one that is intended to simulate watching the concert while headbanging by rigging it up to another piece of broken hardware. Oh, and he built all of it ''himself'' without much guidance, all to help fund major healthcare initiatives in Canada, the UK, and the US.

* UsefulNotes/SweetDreamsFuel: Many of his albums have plentiful supplies of this, even some of the heavy ones. "The Greys" from ''Ziltoid'' is a very pleasant song, especially towards the ending. ''Ki'', ''Epicloud'', ''Transcendence'', and ''Empath'' are overall very upbeat albums as well, though most of them have some heavy moments. Even ''Addicted'', despite being pretty heavy, is very uplifting overall. Most of ''Casualties of Cool'' could qualify as well, despite occasional NightmareFuel moments. ''Ghost'' probably takes the cake, though.

** Speaking of screams in the end, the ear-piercing shriek at the end of "Things Beyond Things" from ''Ocean Machine'' will leave you in shambles. The effect is compounded due to the album being in the softer side of Devin's work.
