** Nightmare's [[ThatOneAttack swallow attack]] [[ItOnlyWorksOnce working only once]] against Dante might have a meaning beyond gameplay; the dimension is stated to be a result of Dante's underlying mental trauma from all his demon-hunting. The bosses that appear are also KilledOffForReal by the time the fight happens. So Dante is facing his demons in the form of his most recent traumas (a.k.a. the most recent bosses). The attack only works once for that fight because it's Dante ''overcoming'' that particular trauma.
** Whether this was an intentional ShoutOut to Myth/ClassicalMythology or not is unknown, but the [[DemonicSpiders Nobodies]] are among the most difficult and/or annoying enemies to deal with. Does anyone know what alias Odysseus goes by in the Literature/TheOdyssey when he and his crew are up against and stab the Cyclops in the eye? "Nohbdy", which coincidentally in English, is pronounced and has the same meaning as "Nobody", albeit they differ in that they are brutish rather than clever.
* FridgeHorror: At some point, Mallet Island was filled with humans keeping the place up and running. By the time Dante arrives, any traces of human activity are gone, not even bloodstains or bodies are left behind except for maybe one or two, outside of the castle at best. Naturally, the demons very likely killed everyone on the island, but what happened then? Given how demons in fiction tend to act, there could be a certain possibility that the other [[ImAHumanitarian humans were killed and eaten]]...

** The Sparda sword [[PowerUpLetdown seems pointless]] because it uses Alastor's moveset but lacks a Devil Trigger [[EleventhHourSuperpower until the final boss]]. [[GuideDangIt What the game never tells you]], however, is that Sparda ''always'' deals the extra damage Alastor does during Devil Trigger. This may not seem like a good tradeoff, but it helps tremendously on Hard and ''especially'' on [[HarderThanHard Dante Must Die]], where Dante does not gain health while in Devil Trigger and the damage from the attacks Dante can do while in Devil Trigger does not scale up with the difficulty. That Air Raid you used to slaughter enemies on your first playthrough barely scratches even the basic mooks. Melee becomes your main method of dealing damage, and always having the extra damage by using Sparda makes getting through DMD significantly less frustrating.
** Ebony and Ivory are outclassed in damage by all the other guns, but like Sparda above, they become significantly more useful than those other guns on higher difficulties. The pistols give you a significant amount of air control, and using it to help evade attacks that will take off half your lifebar or to more easily get into melee range is far more useful than a little more ranged damage.

* ThatOneAttack: If you get swallowed by Nightmare, you're sent into a demonic dimension where you must fight several [[DemBones Sargassoes]] and one of the previous bosses to get out. However, this also doubles as Nightmare's AchillesHeel. Escaping from this dimension deals a sizable portion of damage to Nightmare's health bar, and also makes the light switches needed to keep Nightmare solid last longer for the rest of the battle. However, {{it only works once}}; you can only be swallowed up by Nightmare once, as all subsequent attempts to eat Dante simply results in a normal bite.

In it, the three beasts circle Dante and can quickly overwhelm and kill him. Fast, cat-like reflexes and a steady eye on the entire battlefield are needed to prevail.

The sub-bullet examples of this game's Seinfeld Is Unfunny trope (previously from the main YMMV.Devil May Cry page) are simply just mentioning this game's Early Installment Weirdness examples.

** The platforming sections don't mix well with the movement physics or static camera. Unfortunately, the movement is also too sluggish (the only way to dodge is to jump) or not that expansive (2 of the face buttons do the same attacks).
** The game not teaching you how to do things as you unlock them.
** The game's difficulties where Normal mode might be a few notches too hard as a result of the game's physics and combat while Easy Automatic making things ''too'' easy with no in-between option. You also can't switch the difficulty in between missions like later games and ''Bayonetta'' would do. It makes Easy Automatic mode even worse because you can't do NewGamePlus for the harder difficulties after beating the game in the easiest difficulty, since it defaults on your save file to that mode every time.
** You also can't replay missions from the menu after completing them. You either need to save the game on one of the other slots (unfortunately, there are only 15 slots for a 23-mission game), or you need to do New Game Plus, so trying to unlock all of the stuff in the game ''can'' take several playthroughs without a guide.

* ThatOneSidequest: The secret mission "The Three Beasts". In it, you have to slay the Shadow demons. Not only was this taxing to first-time players (and Shadows [[DemonicSpiders are no joke]]), but this is the only mission in the game in which you literally have one shot per runthrough (unless you re-loaded the entire level to try again). In it, the three beasts circle Dante and can quickly overwhelm and kill him. Fast, cat-like reflexes and a steady eye on the entire battlefield are needed to prevail.

CompleteMonster: Mundus is the ruler of the demon world and the main villain of DMC 1. Having murdered Eva, the mother of the main protagonist Dante prior to the events of the game, Mundus plots to kill Dante and complete his previous attempt to conquer the human world. To this effect, Mundus creates a demon named Trish in the image of Dante's mother to lure the devil hunter to his island where Dante faces several of Mundus's servants in battle. One of these servants, named Gryphon, is defeated by Dante but instead it is Mundus who kills Gryphon for [[YouHaveFailedMe failing him]] all the while [[BadBoss laughing sadistically]]. When Trish also fails to defeat Dante, Mundus punishes her and uses her as a shield against Dante in their confrontation and displays nothing but contempt for her when she takes a blast meant for Dante.

** The Sparda sword pointless because it uses Alastor's moveset but lacks a Devil Trigger until the final boss. What [[GuideDangIt the game never tells you]], however, is that Sparda ''always'' deals the extra damage Alastor does during Devil Trigger. This may not seem like a good trade-off, but it helps tremendously on Hard and ''especially'' on Dante Must Die, where Dante does not gain health while in Devil Trigger and the damage from the attacks Dante can do while in Devil Trigger do not scale up with the difficulty. That Air Raid you used to slaughter enemies on your first playthrough barely scratches even the basic mooks. Melee becomes your main method of dealing damage, and always having the extra damage by using Sparda makes getting through DMD mode significantly less frustrating.
** Ebony and Ivory are outclassed in damage by all the other guns, but like Sparda above they become significantly more useful than those other guns on higher difficulties. The pistols give you a significant amount of air control and using it to help evade attacks that will take off half your life bar or to more easily get into melee range is far more useful than a little more ranged damage.
* ItWasHisSled: Nelo Angelo is Vergil, due to the character's popularity and importance in later games.

Not only was this taxing to first time first-time players (and Shadows [[DemonicSpiders are no joke), joke]]), but this is the only mission in the game in which you literally have one shot per run through runthrough (unless you re-loaded the entire level to try again). In it, the three beasts circle Dante and could can quickly overwhelm and kill him. Fast, cat-like reflexes and a steady eye on the entire battlefield were are needed to prevail.

* DemonicSpiders: Shadows from ''1'': they're fast, hit hard, can't be damaged by melee attacks, and can only be finished off by attacking a core which is revealed briefly after a certain amount of damage -- plus they're spiteful enough to try a TakingYouWithMe, which you have to run around like a headless chicken for upwards of 10 seconds to avoid. Have fun trying to [[ThatOneSidequest beat three of them at once]] on a 100% run.
* EpilepticTrees: Some fans believe that the zweihander Nelo Angelo wields is actually a corrupted version of the Yamato (in ''3: SE'', Corrupted Vergil's DT has him become Nelo Angelo, with the Yamato replaced by Nelo's sword). Similarly, they believe that Nelo's death factors into the Yamato's broken appearance in ''4''.
* GameBreaker:
** ''1'' has Shotgun Hiking. With Air Hike and a shotgun you can endlessly jump and juggle an airborne target until it dies or you mess up the trick. (This isn't a bug; it's an exploit.)
** The Sparda sword in the first game seems pointless because it uses Alastor's moveset but lacks a Devil Trigger until the final boss.
** Ebony and Ivory are, in the first game, outclassed in damage by all the other guns, but like Sparda above they become significantly more useful than those other guns on higher difficulties. The pistols give you a significant amount of air control and using it to help evade attacks that will take off half your life bar or to more easily get into melee range is far more useful than a little more ranged damage.
* MemeticMutation: I should have been the one to fill this dark page with '''''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79ddOyvnh6o LIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!!!!!]]''''' That one is notably bad to the point that several videos have the audio edited in. There's even a [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDLuXNpUF7w version]] swapping his lines with that of [[VideoGame/MegaManX Zero]] ([[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUbZbAWVYZg and vice versa]]), a character who also had a [[TearJerker legitimately heartfelt moment]] [[{{Narm}} ruined for the same reason]].
* {{Narm}}: The writers were ''bad'' at dramatic moments in ''1''.
--> '''Dante:''' "I should have been the one to fill your dark soul with ''liiiiiiiiiiiight''!"
** For bonus points, Dante's voice cracks very unmanfully right at the end of that line, like he was suddenly struck with reverse puberty.
** Just before then, Mundus's EvilGloating.
---> "[[CaptainObvious So sad that humans will always be humans!]]"
* RelationshipWritingFumble: Director Creator/HidekiKamiya [[https://twitter.com/PG_kamiya/status/26073831156 tweeted]] that it wasn't his intention to portray Trish as Dante's love interest in the original game (although his response that she's ''more'' than that is open to interpretation). In spite of this, there was enough romantic subtext in some of their more touching scenes later on that Trish is still a popular partner for Dante among shippers. It doesn't help that [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRKVEM-a2lg the first game's staff roll]] is titled "Dante & Trish ~ Seeds of '''Love'''."
* SeinfeldIsUnfunny: When it came out, reviews lauded the first game for its fast action and deep gameplay; today, many players who try it find it kind of slow, clunky, and limited ([[EarlyInstallmentWeirdness not to mention]] the infamous [[DamnYouMuscleMemory triangle jump]]). It has the right to be, since it basically set all the foundations of the modern beat 'em all genre, three years before ''VideoGame/{{God of War}}'' and Itagaki's ''VideoGame/NinjaGaiden''.
* SpiritualAdaptation: The first game is often thought of as the best 3D ''Franchise/{{Castlevania}}'' ever made.
* ThatOneAttack:
** If you get swallowed by Nightmare, you're sent into a demonic dimension where you must fight several [[DemBones Sargassoes]] and one of the previous bosses to get out.\\
\\
However, this also doubles as Nightmare's AchillesHeel. Escaping from this dimension deals a sizable portion of damage to Nightmare's health bar, and also makes the light switches needed to keep Nightmare solid last longer for the rest of the battle. However, {{it only works once}}; you can only be swallowed up by Nightmare once, as all subsequent attempts to eat Dante simply results in a normal bite. The fact it only works once is FridgeBrilliance; the dimension is stated to be a result of Dante's underlying mental trauma from all his demon-hunting. The bosses that appear are also KilledOffForReal by the time the fight they can appear in happens. So Dante is facing his demons in the form of his most recent traumas; the most recent bosses. The attack only works once for that fight because it's Dante overcoming that particular trauma.
