** Some new Critic episodes are filmed as recreations of film scenes to avoid copyright strikes, and they tend to get more hits than original style videos, so it turns out the Demo Reel format won after all!

* VindicatedByHistory: When it was first released, the reaction to the series was generally negative with many still wishing for the [[ToughActToFollow Critic to return]]. However, following it's cancellation and the critic's return, there are now a handful of people who consider this series TooGoodToLast, loving it's heavier focus on drama and social satire than pure comedy. Whenever someone says they love or miss it at cons, Doug and Rob's reaction is usually “where were you before?!”

* ShockingSwerve: There was no sign of the Demo Reel studio being purgatory, or Donnie having anything in common with Critic, until The Review Must Go On. Even then, Doug only writes that after being tortured by a Critic that is nowhere near like his last appearance in WebVideo/ToBoldlyFlee (who again, showed no sign of being anything but 100% genuine about his desire to do better), and Donnie is furious at being the victim of a hack writer.

Critic in his review of it makes fun of the AssPull, comparing it to the ''Lost'' finale.

** Because of copyright issues on his youtube channel, a lot of Nostalgia Critic reviews of recent movies recreate whole scenes on the cheap instead of using clips from the movie. These reviews have basically become DemoReel in their own right.

* {{Misblamed}}: The show itself gets used as a scapegoat for the people who complain about "too much skit/character" in reboot, but Doug and even Lewis have pointed out that Doug has ''always'' enjoyed using character/story to make a point, even in 2007 (though Doug has also said he wanted to do the show since then).

** With so much of the show being about Donnie's dead mother and how much he misses her, it became more painful to watch after Doug's mom (who he always thanked for loving him) passed away in September 2016.
