* UnintentionallyUnsympathetic: The AllForNothing ending was clearly intended to show how 'bad' Susan was for daring to successfully engineer a way to cure Alzheimer's Disease. What is really galling is that Susan is 100% correct - they could wipe out degenerative brain disease with this research. Alzheimer's is ultimately fatal, and affects an estimated 5million people ''in the US alone''. But no, apparently we should cheer the death of the scientist that would have saved MILLIONS.
* SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome: That said, while the [=CGI=] is spotty at best, the animatronic sharks still look amazing even today.

* TheScrappy: Susan. Test audiences hated her so much they were shouting "Die bitch!" during the screenings. Saffron Burrows' DullSurprise performance doesn't help, making the character come off like TheSociopath. [[spoiler:The studio went back and reshot the ending just to kill her off.]] She would end up VindicatedByHistory by modern viewers, however.

* VindicatedByHistory: Susan was really hated during the show's airing that test audiences were cheering for her death. Latter viewers, however, noticed just how severe the Alzheimer's disease that she was fighting thus giving her grounds on how she was desperate with the illegal actions; and when she realized that everything was AllForNothing as she killed the second shark, she had a brief MyGodWhatHaveIDone moment and she finally pulled a HeroicSacrifice after telling Carter that it's OK to kill the shark, allowing the menace to finally end. In the end, modern viewers usually sees Susan as a BaseBreakingCharacter that could end up UnintentionallySympathetic.

* [[Narm/Narm:]] "You just knocked us down to the bottom of the food chain!", said in response to the idea that sharks now have enhanced intelligence. Putting aside that we still possess abilities that they lack (tool-making etc), the fact remains that humans don't even ''form'' part of the aquatic food chain. And even if there's some kind of united food chain, are we really below ''rabbits''?

* TearJerker:
** Susan's story of her father's battle with Alzheimer's is pretty damn heartbreaking. For all the stupid and cruel things she does in this movie, it's understandable why she was [[WellIntentionedExtremist willing to go so far to find a cure]].
-->'''Susan''': Tell me Mr. Franklin, have you ever known anyone with Alzheimer's?
-->'''Franklin''': Well, no.
-->'''Susan''': By the end all my father could do was ask why my mother wasn't at home, and each time I told him she was dead I had to watch him take that loss like a car wreck. 200,000 men and women develop Alzheimer's each year! What if you could end all that suffering with a single pill?
** She continues to use her good intentions to defend her immoral actions when confronted with her culpability by Carter, but later on she is forced to destroy the cure when one of the sharks attacks her, frying it along with the hormone she previously extracted from one of the other sharks. Afterwards she slinks down into a TroubledFetalPosition.

* EnsembleDarkhorse: LL Cool J's character Preacher spends most of the movie alone, separated from the main cast, who never even seem to remember he's there. This makes one wonder if he was even originally intended to be in the movie, but eventually he turns out to be a lot more intelligent and even more likable than the other characters. Apparently he was popular enough that the movie was rewritten to have him survive at the end.

* TookTheBadFilmSeriously: A review of the film said that it works because everyone [[HamAndCheese isn't taking it seriously]], making it quite fun. The exception is Saffron Burrows, who "behaves as it was an art film" (and unlike most of the examples here, gives a ''bad'' performance).
