These aren\'t YMMV. Moving.

* DullSurprise: Jack always talks in the same tone of voice. Even when insanity kicks in.
* EldritchAbomination: Cthulhu, Hydra, and Dagon. The Shoggoth, Deep Ones, Star Spawn of Cthulhu and the Flying Polyps are smaller versions of this.

Good to know, but no excuse for Natter. Unwinnable By Mistake isn\'t even a subjective trope and it it\'s on the main page already.

* UnwinnableByMistake: On the PC version, depending on your system specs, resolution and graphics card and such. The commonly cited one - the endgame cave escape - is indeed extremely difficult, but this troper completed it without too much fuss (on 1440x900 resolution) simply by ensuring that Jack had his pistol readied rather than the {{BFG}} and making sure to hug all of the inside corners at all times during the escape. It is a nasty section and does slow down the momentum of the game, but IMO it isn't nearly as bad as the Reef Lights bug, wherein the blue lights that you have to shoot on the reef using the clipper ship cannon simply don't appear. This troper had to figure out where to shoot from a youtube video in order to complete that section totally blind, and the only other solution is downloading someone else's savegame to skip it, which also overwrites all of your achievements and game completion stats with theirs. Not a fun solution.

* MemeticMutation: "Spread out! Search the area!", which is repeated over and over and ''over'' again by the Innsmouth residents.

* WallBanger: Burnham refuses to escape from Innsmouth unless Jack retrieves a ''locket'' from the jailhouse safe because of its sentimental value, despite everyone in town trying to kill them both.
** Made worse if you happen to notice that Burnham's job is to stay inside a locked building with no windows and a monster repelling seal near one of the doors to repair a car while yours is to break into a ''safe'' in the ''corrupt police station'' where you not only know the keepers will imprison, frame, and execute an outsider if they feel like it, but you also know that instead of having knives like most of the other corrupt citizens, they'll have ''guns''. And to think you ''came'' to this town to rescue this guy.
** Another example being Hoover telling Jack to investigate the bottom floor of the refinery. Keeping in mind you were only seconds ago on the second to bottom floor where a huge terrible blob monster nearly killed you and you barely escape by jumping out of the elevator as it's ripping it down. Jack complains a little, but after a small threat, he agrees to go if he's just given a hand gun... That's to say Jack prioritizes being afraid of Hoover more than the horrible monster that you KNOW bullets won't even touch. By the way, as you climb down the elevator shaft, you are told by Hoover that they're planting explosives to level the building so you should put a rush on that.
** Justified in that it's Hoover. "Let's see I can take on the monster that will kill me.... Or piss off the one guy in America that can and will make my life a living hell..... So where's that monster again?"
** Does bring up the question of why Hoover thinks he can trust Jack with a gun, and putting him behind himself, just after torturing him a few hours earlier, and why Jack should feel compelled [[spoiler:to rescue him from being lowered into molten gold]] after that.
** Hell, Hoover asking Jack to go down there was a WallBanger itself. Jack has already seen the shoggoth, and Hoover's agents are already about to level the building with explosives. All that happens down there is Jack turns on some steam and finds a shrine to Cthulhu, so really, him going down there did nothing at all. They should've just let him escape and ''then'' level the building.
** The aforementioned HellHotel and NiceJobBreakingItHero scenes, which were really obvious a long way off, and should have been to Jack too even taking genre-blindness into account. You can find the hotel owner confessing to murdering guests ''in his diary'', and still decide your best course of action is to go upstairs and go to sleep...
*** To be fair, the game won't let you go to sleep until you locked all the doors in the room. Still pretty stupid, though.
*** And not to mention that the player ''knows'' at this point that horrific abominations are stalking you, and both you and Jack are keenly aware that everyone hates your guts. If it's a toss up between being on the streets of Innsmouth at night, or sleeping in the hotel of a murderer, you're screwed no matter what you do.
