* EvilIsCool: [[ZigzaggedTrope Zigzagged]] in regards to Lucifer. SatanIsALoser is very much in effect in the original ''Literature/TheDivineComedy'' in which he is depicted stuck in the Icy center of Hell powerless to do anything about his torment. The Lucifer of this game on the other had is given some AdaptationalBadass and cleverness and also gives him a case of being a VillainHasAPoint, namely given that HumansAreBastards is in full effect, but even then it is also juxtaposed with him being StupidEvil.

*** The 1986 Manga/FistOfTheNorthStar film had TheHero Kenshiro's traits of MessianicArchetype emphasized [[FauxSymbolism to egregious extremes]]. John VIckery, who voiced Kenshiro in the English language dub of the film, now ironically provides the voice of {{Satan}} in this game.
*** In Manga/RurouniKenshin, Shishio, voiced by Creator/SteveBlum in the American English dub by Creator/MediaBlasters, occasionally compares himself to being a demon (granted he [[NecessarilyEvil believes that he is right]]) and expects to go to Hell when he dies and, [[spoiler: following his death via internal combustion, is shown along with Yumi and Houji in the underworld with the ambition of taking it over]]. Later in 2010, Blum would provide the voice of {{Satan}} himself in VideoGame/DantesInferno: [[AnimatedAdaptation An Animated Epic]] [[spoiler: who in turn has an ambitious goal of his own in ruling all three realms (Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven) of the afterlife]].

This HackAndSlash game is an obvious clone of ''VideoGame/{{God of War|Series}}'', a Sony-owned series that was created [[DuelingGames to compete against]] (and partly inspired by) the ''Franchise/DevilMayCry'' series... which was in turn inspired by Dante Alighieri's ''Literature/TheDivineComedy''. ** The Hoarder/Waster. They don't do much damage, but they have an annoying spin attack that lasts a whole lot of time, knocks you over and potentially keeps doing it if it hits you again and it's completely immune. It may not be a big deal when you have only that enemy, but having many enemies at the same time can make it incredibly annoying.

* DesignatedVillain: The first three bosses. Death is... well, [[TheGrimReaper Death]], Charon is just there to move souls, and King Minos only sorts the souls into the proper circles. Not terribly glaring, though; no one likes Death when he visits, the other two "work" for Hell regardless, and all three [[KnightTemplar got in Dante's way]].

* GeniusBonus: In addition to being an adaptation of the "The Inferno" the game also incorporates some details about Dante Alighieri that will be interesting for anyone who is knowledgeable about the Florentine poet. Two notable tidbits are those about Bella when [[spoiler: Dante finds her in the Wood of the Suicides]] saying that she died of the fever (which is how the real-life Bella Alighieri (née Abati) died) and that the character Francesco shares his name with Alighieri's real-life half brother.

* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: In relation to the [[TheDivineComedy original Inferno]] by Dante Alighieri. Some literary scholars and feminists have taken issue with this game's portrayal of Beatrice. To quote TheOtherWiki "Columbia University Professor Teodolinda Barolini, a former president of the Dante Society of America, criticized the game for its depiction of Beatrice, declaring, 'Of all the things that are troubling, the sexualization and infantilization of Beatrice are the worst. Beatrice is the human girl who is dead and is now an agent of the divine. She is not to be saved by him, she is saving him. That’s the whole point! Here, she has become the prototypical damsel in distress. She’s this kind of bizarrely corrupted Barbie doll.'[54] Other reviews of the game include similar comments from professors regarding the characters: 'Beatrice saves Dante... not the other way around,'[55] says Professor Arielle Saiber, an Italian literature professor at Bowdoin College."

That\'s really more Deliberate Values Dissonance.

* RatedMForMoney: Somewhat subverted as this was meant to be a realistic depictions of what hell is said to be like. Which would be horrifying and filled with nudity (especially in lust) and violence, not to mention people only go there for one reason. While it did change the basic story of what the book was about, it was pretty faithful to its core message of redemption and ends on a peaceful note.

* ValuesDissonance: Remaining relatively true to the source material, Dante's former mentor is in Hell for being a homosexual who engaged in sodomy. The dissonance may be why you earn an achievement for absolving him.
** This may not be that bad, as some speculate Dante's mentor is actually in Hell for being an unrepentant child molester (a more reasonable excuse to place someone in Hell). Either way though, there will be dissonance. If you believe the mentor is in Hell for being gay then you'll at least have [[ValuesResonance a nice Achievement to be gained by sending him to Heaven via absolution]]. If you believe the mentor is in Hell for pederasty, then getting an Achievement for sending him to Heaven may feel like a slap to the face.
** FridgeBrilliance: Absolve him if you believe he was an innocent gay man BornInTheWrongCentury, Punish him if you think he took sexual advantage of his young charges.
* UnfortunateImplications: In the original tale, Beatrice is a proactive woman (albeit [[FairForItsDay not very much]]), who actually "saves" Dante. Here, she is not only a DamselInDistress, but actually rather harshly condemned in a "Eve's fault" kind of way.

** The fully charged blast of the cross comes to mind. It is very powerful, has a long range and area of effect, breaks all defenses and knocks the enemy over. The only downside is of course a charge-time which isn't very long though. Single enemies (even some bosses) can just be spammed to death by it and even groups can be reduced to dust pretty quickly if you let them hug together on a tight area.

** Virgil claims that the sinners are wallowing in mud for all eternity. But given the context of the level, ''that's not mud.''

** It's not one of the more talked-about parts of the Inferno nowadays, but one of the central themes of the text was that Dante needed to unconditionally accept God's will as completely just, and to not feel any sorrow or sympathy for the damned whatsoever. (Early in the poem he feels sorry for the shades, but later on when he shows no sympathy for any of the damned, the poem treats it as righteous character development) Because the video game wasn't produced in a fundamentalist compound, Visceral wisely chose to scrap that theme completely, allowing the player to use their discretion as to whether individual souls deserve their torrid fate or if they should see paradise.
