** Kokichi is a perpetual {{Jerkass}} throughout the whole story and, regardless of good intentions, ends up hateable beyond his own characterization as someone intentionally making himself hateable. He's over-the-top and incredibly charismatic in the process, however, which is why he's well-liked.

* AuthorsSavingThrow:
** This game being released on Steam at the same time as the [=PSVita=] and [=PS4=] versions, on September 26th. The previous two games were released only by 2016 (about 6 years after ''Trigger Happy Havoc'' and 4 years after ''Goodbye Despair''). Considering how much of a big seller they were on Steam and how much fans asked and prayed for this release, the fact that it's coming so fast was met with great happiness and praise.
** TheStinger has the survivors talk about the possibility that Tsumugi was just screwing with them about their lives being fictional. Somebody at Spike Chunsoft must have predicted how controversial the ending was going to be, leading them to include that bit of ambiguity.
** Some had criticisms for the deaths of Kiyotaka and Hiyoko in the first and second games respectively, as they unceremoniously happen literally the chapter after the deaths of the characters they form a bond with, negating any chances of further CharacterDevelopment. Here, Tenko posthumously convinces Himiko to be more expressive with her emotions. Unlike Taka and Hiyoko, Himiko not only survives the following chapter after Tenko's death but also survives the entire game.
*** On a similar note, some survivors from past games (such as Yasuhiro, Kazuichi, Akane, and Sonia) were criticized for having their characters stay the same throughout the whole entire game without any CharacterDevelopment. Here, all three survivors ended up receiving a fair amount of CharacterDevelopment. In fact, you can guess the mastermind near the end by noticing which of the only students hasn't received any.

* CompleteMonster: Tsumugi Shirogane is revealed to be the true mastermind of the Killing Game, who in actuality works for the corporation [[EvilInc Team Danganronpa]] and acts as their mole in the 53rd entry of Danganronpa. Acting as a CosplayOtakuGirl in the killing game who was usually [[ObfuscatingStupidity not the smartest]], it gets revealed that Tsumugi was the true culprit of the first trial, where she killed Rantaro Amami because Kaede Akamatsu's plan failed and wanted to ensure that the Killing Game continued, bending the rules of the game and [[AcquittedTooLate letting Kaede get executed because of it]]. Later in the last trial, Tsumugi AND Monokuma tell the rest of the survivors about the true conditions of the world, in which the Killing Game is actually a [[SadisticGameShow game show]] called Danganronpa to entertain the uneventful and peaceful real world. Tsumugi and Monokuma would reveal that her company brainwashed every survivor with FalseMemories and rewrote their personalities so that they would truly act scared and helpless. Tsumugi and Monokuma are SO obsessed Danganronpa franchise that when the audience watching the show were convinced by Shuichi, Maki, and Himiko to not want it anymore, Tsumugi and Monokuma would let themselves be killed alongside the studio so that they wouldn't exist in a world that doesn't want Danganronpa.

** Maki's skill, Fundraising, ''doubles'' the amount of Monocoins you receive after a Trial (as opposed to +10% from the previous two games). Couple with the fact that Trials yield lots more Monocoins than before, this significantly cuts down the amount of time you need to purchase all the unlockables, especially the stronger skills from the casino. The drawbacks that offset this are that it costs a whopping 32 skill points, and that Maki doesn't open up to Shuichi until Chapter 3.
