* AwardSnub: A snub in ''Crash'''s favor - a number of critics and moviegoers felt that ''Crash'' won Best Picture not so much due to its quality as a film inasmuch as its anti-racism stance was "safer" compared to that of its chief competitor ''Film/BrokebackMountain'', and it frequently gets brought up among the Academy's biggest mistakes over the years.

I actually don't think that's a defensible reading.

to:

* {{Anvilicious}}: Modern transport is bad.AudienceAlienatingPremise: It's a novel about repulsive people both using and being used by each other, and also about their intense sexual attraction to car crashes. So alienating it literally got Ballard called "beyond psychiatric help."

Not YMMV.

* BrokenAesop: Despite the film's reputation for being anti-racist, many reviewers in later years have pointed that the film ultimately ''fails'' as an anti-racist message. This in spite of it being full of painfully ham-fisted discussions about race, the film doesn't really talk about the issue, doesn't want its audience to think about the issue, and at most, it treats racism as simply being a character flaw. In his review of the film, Ta-Nehisi Coates stated that:
--> "I don't think there's a single human being in ''Crash.'' Instead you have arguments and propaganda violently bumping into each other, impressed with their own quirkiness."

* FunnyMoments: While mostly dealing with the drama of race issues in America, the movie also highlights the subject's often hilarious absurdity.
** Pretty much all the dialogue between Anthony and Peter, the carjackers, whose conversations are usually centered around Peter's incredulity in the face of Anthony's hypocritical obsession with racial stereotypes.
** Rick wants to soften his public image in the eyes of black voters after he is car-jacked by two black men, suggesting that he pin a medal on a man he believes to be a heroic black firefighter. The man ''is'' a hero, but one of his assistants informs him that the firefighter is an Iraqi man named Saddam. Frustrated, Rick proceeds to mock the notion of pinning a medal on an Iraqi named Saddam as if it were his assistant's idea.
** To avoid controversy over Sgt. Ryan's racially motivated sexual assault, Officer Hanson's superior forces him to claim that he's requesting to patrol solo due to an intolerable case of "flatulence." Specifically, Hanson's flatulence, not Ryan's. It gets funnier later when Hanson's fellow officers troll him about it over the police radio.
** "Mom, I can't talk right now, I'm having sex with a white woman."
** The fence's monologue about the Discovery Channel.

* HeReallyCanAct: This is the movie, back to back with ''Hustle & Flow'', in which Ludacris began to seriously win people over as an actor.
* HeartwarmingMoments: Anthony refusing to turn the Cambodian immigrants over to his fence, and instead releasing them into the city.
** Everything about the "invisible cloak."
** Ryan risking his life to save Christine's, comforting her as she breaks down in the wake of her trauma, and neither of them knowing how to reconcile this with what he'd previously done to her.
** Similarly, Jean hugging her maid and realizing that she's the only real friend she has.
** Cameron and Christine's reconciliation in the end.

* CrossesTheLineTwice: There's a few instances of this, but Flanagan's weary declaration of "Fuckin' black people, right?" to Graham Waters, a black detective, really stands out. The latter's subtly astonished reaction really sells it.

* JerkassWoobie: Graham Waters. He's a rather callous person, especially toward those close to him, and ultimately [[spoiler: condemns a fellow police officer for gunning down a deranged undercover cop in self-defense.]] However, by the end of the movie it's clear that he's a good cop who does care about people [[spoiler: and this fact is used to blackmail him into claiming the innocent white cop's killing of the guilty black one was racially motivated in order to protect his brother Peter. Which is then rendered pointless when he finds Peter murdered. And worst of all, his drug-addicted mother blames him for Peter's death. To add insult to injury, his mom believes Peter bought her groceries before he died, not knowing that Graham was the one who did while she was strung out.]] His look of utter defeat in the end is tragic.

** For some, the "invisible cloak" scene.

** For some, the The "invisible cloak" scene.scene.
** For some, Graham's opening monologue about "the sense of touch."
* TheWoobie: Daniel, a kind and honest lower-class family man who finds himself a victim of racial profiling due to his appearance.
** Also Cameron and Christine.

** One of the reasons why so many people hate the fact that this film won over ''BrokebackMountain.''
