** Famously, the box features an extra-large "M" ESRB rating (as seen on the main page)... except not. That version of the box was never actually printed; the image floating around online is a mockup leaked by Nintendo of Canada before the game's release. All copies of the game ultimately had a regular-sized "M" on the box, as seen on Wiki/{{Wikipedia}}. However, the PAL version does indeed feature an extra-large "M15+" rating.

The backlash the game was receiving for being "another wholesome platformer" (translation: the backlash was because the game waqs accused of being derivative and unoriginal, especially because they had already released Banjo-Kazooie and DK 64, and Banjo-Tooie was already on the way) WAS the reason why development shifted for it to become an adult-oriented game, and the game was actually hyped for this. Nothing off-putting to speak of

* WhatDoYouMeanItsNotForKids: Some gullible parents bought the game for their kids on the assumption that it was another cutesy Rareware platformer due to the squirrel on the cover, despite Rareware's attempts to make it clear in advertising that it was not a game for children. The very first screen you see on booting up the game warns you about this too. The remake makes it justified due to its censored dialogue. It doesn't help that this game ''was'' going to be another wholesome Rare platformer, ''VideoGame/TwelveTalesConker64'' (with the previous WorkingTitle of ''Conker's Quest'') having been promoted several times in ''Magazine/NintendoPower'' and other publications during its pre-retool development, so people who stopped following its development after Rare went radio-silient on it may have come back later upon its release and discovered to their shock that what was going to be cutesy game about a squirrel now throws in every kind of "adult" humor in the book. People who didn't follow its development cycle closely but did play ''VideoGame/ConkersPocketTales'', which was released before the decision to retool ''Twelve Tales'' into ''BFD'', got a similar shock.

* TaintedByThePreview: A fair number of folks, especially children, who were looking forward to ''VideoGame/TwelveTalesConker64'' or didn't follow its development cycle closely but did play ''VideoGame/ConkersPocketTales'', were upset when the game ended up being composted into ''Bad Fur Day'', whether it was because of their MoralGuardian parents who refused to buy a game that they had been looking forward to for so long, or simply felt that the injection of "adult" humor was totally unnecessary and did not appeal to them at all.

** In the context of the Nintendo 64 and the other platformers Rare made for it, Conker was quite a shock, as many of the console's games were family-friendly and targeted at kids, which was something that Conker turned right on its head. In contrast UsefulNotes/TheSixthGenerationOfConsoleVideoGames, especially the Xbox, were much more targeted at older audiences, making the game less subversive in that context, and largely factored into the poor reception of the game's Xbox remake. Furthermore, the game's heavy use of VulgarHumor makes it an embodiment of AnimatedShockComedy, which was very unique at the time and factored into its CultClassic status, but works with this style of humor aren't so scarce anymore.

* AnimationAgeGhetto: This was a factor in the game's commercial failure. Rare was reportedly worried that it would be mistaken for a kids' game because it looked so cute and "cartoonish". So they limited advertisement for it to nighttime TV and adult magazines. This backfired, and the game sold badly due to InvisibleAdvertising. Many retailers had similar concerns about the title, and refused to sell it further contributing to its poor sales.

Besides being set around and inside a mountain covered to the brink with crap, one puzzle involves swimming through a room flooded with cow manure (which you made by tricking a trio of cows into drinking prune juice) and pushing a giant ball made by a dung beetle into a switch to access Bats Tower. And then there's its boss, The Great Mighty Poo, one of the most revolting abominations ever conceived for a video game -- it's a giant mountain of singing poop that eats sweet corn and throws chunks of itself at you!

* CultClassic: While the game got solid critical reviews, the game was a big sales flop for Rare due to a variety of factors. Despite this, the game gradually built up a solid reputation among gamers over time due to its very unique tone and creativity for a Nintendo game, and is now considered a legitimate classic, enough to not only get an Xbox remake, but even get some mainstream attention again via a prominent and well done port in ''Rare Replay''. Conker himself even gained a prominent playable role in Microsoft's ''VideoGame/ProjectSpark'' because of the original game's popularity.
