* LoveToHate: [[spoiler:Chester V is a self-centered, despicable CorruptCorporateExecutive with no redeeming qualities and constantly mistreats everyone around him, including Barb, but he acts with great charisma, has a hammy personality, and too many comedic moments to make him truly hateable.]]

Cut per thread.

* CondemnedByHistory: When the movie initially came out, it was fairly well-liked and successful at the box office and when several animation critics, Mat Brunet being the most prominent example, have come out and made their case for it being a bad film they would receive a ton of hate at first. However, over the years, there would be a much more vocal dislike of the film especially by fans of the first film due to the need to dumb down Flint, wasting most of the characters, the constant use of food puns, a forced environmental message and humor just not being as funny as in the first movie, with the response to previously mentioned reviewers such as Animat being much more positive and supportive of their opinions. Nowadays the sequel is most often ignored at best and at worst a more hated sequel.

** Coffee table! [[labelnote:Explanation]]In the invention montage, Flint shows off an "invisible coffee table" which his dad immediately trips over. A clip circulating around online cuts out the "invisible" part, so Flint just joyfully announces [[MundaneMadeAwesome "COFFEE TABLE!"]].[[/labelnote]]

* ContestedSequel: On one hand, you have people who find it a decent enough follow-up to the first film, with a good plot, nice visuals, and unpacking Flint's relationship with his dad and friends a bit. Others see this movie as a really painful case of {{Sequelitis}}, citing that characterizations are botched or [[{{Flanderization}} Flanderized]], many of the characters (beyond Flint, Sam, Chester, and Barb, at least) [[TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter are wasted or useless]], and generally just marks the beginning of the franchise [[FranchiseZombie going downhill]].

* AuthorsSavingThrow: Though the look wasn't disliked, Sam's 'perky' look remains far more popular than her eventual 'nerdy' appearance. The sequel has her let some hair down while still pulling it back, combining elements of both.
