Not a valid theory; though misleading, nothing in Spike's dialogue actually directly contradicts the idea he wanted the soul. It's confirmed both in and out of universe it was always his intent. Case closed, there's no wiggle room in the interpretation.

* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: Did Spike genuinely ''want'' his soul back to be a man who wouldn't attack Buffy like that, or did he want the chip removed so that he could be the monster again? Keep in mind that anything he says he wanted ''after'' these events is potentially tainted because his time as a raving lunatic post-soul could have distorted his memory.... WordOfGod seems to support the former interpretation.

It's on the recap page. In response to fans wondering if the demon double-crossed Spike they went out and said that he went their for his soul.
