* FriendlyFandoms: Building up to the release of ''New Horizons'', a small, but amusingly odd fandom crossover was forged between that of ''VideoGame/DoomEternal'' after both games were delayed and set to be released on the same day. Considering how tonally opposite both games are from the other, it was only natural that fans have joked about [[RealMenWearPink the Doom Slayer interacting wholesomely with characters]] of ''Animal Crossing''.
* HilariousInHindsight: In 2013, someone made an obscure fangame named "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OVKL8AQzO8 Animal Crossing: New Horizons]]". Come E3 2019, the video is starting to pick up popularity after the announcement of the Switch game of the same name.
* MemeticMutation:
** A running gag up to the announcement of ''Animal Crossing'' for the Switch was to post pictures of various Animal Crossing merchandise and games arranged as a summoning circle in hopes that an announcement would be made in regards to a future title.
** The ability to sell (literal) weeds in ''New Horizons'' quickly became compared to selling [[TheStoner the other kind of weed]].
** Animalcraft/Minecrossing: After the gameplay of ''New Horizons'' was revealed in more detail (including ItemCrafting and the ability to sculpt the island's landscape), quite a few people noticed the similarities between the game and ''VideoGame/{{Minecraft}}''.
** ''New Horizons'' got a lot of crossover art with, of all possible games, ''VideoGame/DoomEternal'' due to sharing the same release date. Most of which tends to show Isabelle cheerfully slaying demons alongside the Slayer (or Isabelle ''as'' the Slayer).
* TaintedByThePreview: Many players claimed to have been put off ''New Horizons'' due to the presence of SaveGameLimits such as [[http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2020/02/you_wont_be_able_to_transfer_animal_crossing_new_horizons_save_data_to_another_switch the inability to transfer save data between consoles]] and [[https://twitter.com/ACPocketNews/status/1223071154300211203 the limit of one island per console across all player profiles]].
* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: When it was announced ''New Horizons'' would not have cloud save functionality to prevent cheating and that there would be only one island per Switch console, to say that some people looking to buy the game were ''way, way beyond livid'' about this perplexing choice [[Administrivia/RuleOfCautiousEditingJudgement would be an understatement.]] On the brighter side, there's been a lot of people clamoring for a compromise or a solution via voicing their concerns to Nintendo themselves to help them change this, and there's also a petition for this.
