Ship Sinking is not YMMV and has been redefined to require in-universe acknowledgment for both the possibility of the couple and the ship sinking itself.

** The arranged matrimony between [[spoiler:Asseylum and Klancain]] at series's finale has been received with ire by a big part of the fanbase for [[spoiler:[[ShipSinking destroying all the Asseylum ships]], including the favorite Inaho/Asseylum]]. Even though the other part thinks it perhaps makes more political sense InUniverse than a conventional romantic resolution, many of them agree that it feels sudden and unnecesary, especially after the amount of incredibly unsubtle ShipTease the good princess gets (see Ship Sinking below). Another thing which makes this particularly galling is that [[spoiler:Klancain]] was introduced three episodes before the finale, and therefore never really received much development or characterization.

Up To Eleven is a defunct trope

** Concept-wise, the show sounds an awful lot similar to Anime/TurnAGundam and Anime/BlueCometSPTLayzner in some aspects; The opposing force that came from an extraterrestrial background [[spoiler:that happens to be related to Earth all along]], the wide technological gap between each faction[[labelnote:comparison]]Both factions have more advanced military equipment and tactical prowess (debatable for Vers Knights though), with one of them capable of exploring outside of their home galaxy, whereas the Earthlings were usually left with anything current (Gradosian has the SPT and other spatial military devices while Earthlings were still only using jet planes or battleships retrofitted for spatial environmental use. The Vers Empire utilizes the Aldnoah technology for their more advanced Kataphrakts that can shred through cities in short time while the UFE were stuck with more conventional gunpowder weapons and pretty old mass-produced Kats that're inferior in most aspects. The Moonrace utilizes their bizarre Mobile Suits and many other technological advantages against the Earthers that are [[UpToEleven pretty much stuck with classic World War 1 equipment]], until they get their hands on some hidden mobile suits (and eventually, Moon Race own issues) anyways[[/labelnote]], the resentment from the invading faction used as the driving force and motivation to invade Earth[[labelnote:comparison]]Gradosian invades Earth under the clause of their own SocialDarwinist view and the inability to see themselves as equals [[spoiler:(especially after it's revealed that they're humans from the prehistoric era kidnapped by the real Gradosians and integrated into their population)]]. The Vers Empire (specifically Rayregalia) resented the Earth's treatment of them during their developing time on Mars, resulting in a string of events that precedes ''[=Heaven's=] Fall''. The Moon Race who believed they are the originators of the Earth, and were set to take away Earth from its current inhabitants (not including the fact that Guin has his own plans)[[/labelnote]], their governmental body is ruled by a Monarch in an imperialistic manner, the main character has a relation to the opposing faction, often with "Princess and Knight" dynamics (Inaho and Asseylum, Loran and Dianna, Eiji and her sister Julia by the second half), and many more.

** [[WellIntentionedExtremist Count Saazbaum]] is the leader of the VERS Empire's Orbital Knights and the [[BigBad mastermind]] behind the assassination attempt on on Princess Asseylum Vers Allusia, starting a war between Earth and Mars with plans to have Earth conquered so their vast resources can be used for Mars' benefit while seeking to replace the current ruling family with a more democratic government as {{revenge}} for the death of his fiancee. Saazbaum also manipulates Emperor Rayregalia Vers Rayvers into believing that Slaine Troyard is a traitor when Slaine tries telling him about Asseylum's survival resulting in his capture by Count Cruhteo before Saazbaum kills Cruhteo upon learning the truth and capture Slaine. Sparing Slaine out of [[NobleDemon respect]] for his father having once saved Saazbaum, Saazbaum convinces Slaine to join his side, helping him defeat Inaho Kaizuka and capture Asseylum. Saazbaum and Slaine then have Lemrina Vers Envers disguise herself as Asseylum to manipulate the Martians to continue their war Earth, before Saazbaum names Slaine his successor, spending his last moments complimenting Slaine before dying.
** [[{{Deuteragonist}} Slaine Troyard]] is a Terran-born Martian who became Asseylum's closest friend after she saved his life. Growing more [[TookALevelInBadass ruthless and cunning]] as he uncovers the conspiracy to kill Asseylum and start a war between Earth and Mars, Slaine allies himself with the conspiracy's leader, Saazbaum, helping him defeat Inaho Kaizuka, and capture Asseylum before turning on Saazbaum to avenge Asseylum by letting his trap kill him. Slaine then paints Saazbaum as a martyr to continue the war between Earth and Mars, [[WellIntentionedExtremist hoping]] that through conquest, peace would be established, while using his role as Saazbaum successor and adopted son to become leader of the Orbital Knights, while killing off any who opposes him. Using military tactics and strategies to keep the heroes on the defense, Slaine only fails to win the war when Asseylum escapes from Slaine clutches where Slaine makes [[LastVillainStand one final stand]] against Inaho. Being denied the death he wanted in battle, Slaine smiles upon learning that Asseylum wanted him spared, happy that she still cared for him.

** The story and characters really feel like a copy-and-paste of ''Anime/CodeGeass'' once you compare the two. For example; one protagonist is a dark haired protagonist who performs insane plans on the fly despite being a teenager, gains a special power that allows him to manipulate things to suit his plans better, and is trying to protect his sister. Meanwhile the other protagonist is a member of the opposite faction who is fighting against the same people he hails from, is a lighter-haired protagonist who ends up piloting a white colored mech and operates more with emotion then reason. From that description alone you wouldn't be able to tell if the characters discussed are Lelouch and Suzaku, or Inaho and Slaine. Even the ending to the first season is almost the exact same, with it being that both protagonists draw guns on each other and their fates left unanswered until the second season. While it may not have been intentional, the similarities make it seem like Creator/A1Pictures and Creator/{{Troyca}} were simply trying to copy the success ''Code Geass'' had since the series had been over for a few years.

Misuse. Does not mention audience avoiding work.

* EndingAversion: Season 2 already suffered issues, such as [[CliffhangerCopout everyone surviving the season 1 finale]], Inaho becoming even more overpowered and Lemrina [[RememberTheNewGuy being introduced out of nowhere]]. The ending itself was controversial for several reasons, [[spoiler:such as Asseylum marrying a completely different guy and Slaine sentenced to life in prison.]]

** Inaho/Slaine is extremely popular among the fanbase, even though their relationship in canon makes it closer to a CrackPairing [[spoiler: and as good as impossible after episode 12]]. Cruhteo/Slaine is also quite popular for the UnequalPairing undertones, especially after episode 8.
** There is also [[BrotherSisterIncest Inaho/Yuki]], because the latter understands him more than others and the fact that they grew up together. Some of the fans who don't mind the latter think it would work if the latter was not his sister. Nevertheless, even the theoretical possibility of this remains in question, given their age difference and blood ties with the total absence of IncestSubtext in the show.
** Another group is for Inaho/Inko, had if not for Inaho's BrutalHonesty about Inko's weight.

** For some reason, Vers pilots don't wear pressurized suits (or pilot suits whatsoever) while piloting their Kataphrakts in space. One can guess that at least Marylcian realized how useful it would have been wearing one when he got thrown out of his mecha to hard vacuum.
** The Orbital Knights think they are so superior with their technology, that they prefer to toy with their targets rather than getting the mission done (unlike Saazbaum who prefer to slay his targets quickly and without mercy). This gives time for the UE Army to regroup and Inaho to come up with his miraculous plans to beat them. When caught by surprise, you'd think they would retreat or change position. No, they just stand still and watch in disbelief while they get their asses kicked. Also, the knights fail to realize that something must have gone wrong when they start losing one by one to puny inferior Terrans. Yet, they do nothing to change their strategies or tactics. It's only when Slaine whips them into shape that they become more of a threat, but it comes a little too late to make a significant impact in the long run.
** Most of the time, the Orbital Knights jumps into the fray alone without any reinforcements whatsoever, at least the ones that appeared on-screen. Since Inaho and his peers are ganging up against them most of the time, why didn't they look back at that and do the same?
** The Vers emperor, who should you trust: a person who is constantly under watch and have no actual ability or reason to betray you, or the person who instigated a war without your permission? Even weirder since he questioned the motive around the assassination in the start of the episode. Racism towards Eathlings would cover his obliviousness, but still...
** The entire research team that worked on the Deucalion. Sure, let's spend millions on a battleship powered by something ''no Earthling can actually use''. Presumably they were hoping to discover a way to activate it like the Versians can, but you'd think they'd do those experiments '''before''' converting the mecha into a battleship...
** Apparently Rayet's father genuinely believed he was going to get promoted to nobility for assassinating his own side's princess. There's a reason assassins are usually paid with cash and a plane ticket out of the country, rather than fame.

* AssPull: There is really no reason Orga's MesACrowd Kataphrakt could ever be defeated within the context of the series. [[spoiler: shooting all his mechs at the exact same time appparently does the job]], but before then, half-dozens of Orgas had been vaporized at the same time by the Deucalion's heavy guns only to immediately reinforce themselves. Even when he only deploys with a ''single'' mech, shooting it didn't do anything despite the fact that it was "all" his mech(s) at the time. In hindsight, it's almost fragrantly a case of OnlyTheAuthorCanSaveThemNow. Turns out writing a quantum-duplicating mech with no inherent weaknesses into your series where every other VERS Knight suffers from CripplingOverspecialization wasn't a great idea.

** The show is sometimes referred to as "Boku no Slaine" due to the scriptwriter Katsuhiko Takayama's previous work on a certain memetically infamous OVA series.
** "Bowl Cut" for Trillram, because of his hairstyle. Sometimes, "Space Bowl Cut" and "the Evil Bowl Cut" also appear.
** "Space [[LightNovel/FateZero Tokiomi]]" for Cruhteo due to sharing a [[Creator/ShowHayami voice actor]], staff, [[spoiler:humiliating demise]], and general [[UpperClassTwit aristocratic demeanour]], as well as both series sharing a lot of staff. "Croutons" also crops up, due to the awkward spelling of his name.
** 'Sauce-bum', 'Sassybum', and 'The Sauce', for the BigBad, Count Saazbaum, for obvious reasons. As the series progressed and he was revealed to be an increasingly sympathetic and badass MagnificentBastard instead of a generic SmugSnake NonActionBigBad, 'Awesomesauce' began to gain popularity.
** 'Eggs' for Inaho, because of his [[MemeticMutation famously]] SkewedPriorities. After the mid-season finale, [[spoiler: Scrambled Eggs]] is also becoming popular. In Japan, he has the unflattering nickname of 'Onaho'/'Inahole'.
*** And as of the second season, we have Odinho, [[VideoGame/DeusExHumanRevolution Inaho Jensen]], and [[VideoGame/MetalGearSolid4GunsOfThePatriots Solid Inaho]].
** "PTSD-kun" for Marito, as this is pretty much his defining characteristic.
** "Rat" for Rayet, thanks to the similarity of her name and her former role as a sleeper agent. Used both fondly and disparagingly by fans, occasionally both at once.
** Viewers who are familiar with Katsuhiko Takayama's work (the scriptwriter for episodes 4 and beyond) have come up with their own nickname for him after the season finale: [[spoiler: Ta'''[[KillEmAll kill]]'''yama]].
** People who can't easily spell Princess [[SpellMyNameWithAnS Asseylum's]] name often just give up and refer to her as "The Princess" or "Asshime".
*** "Pickles" for when [[spoiler: while she's inside the life tube]].
** And people who keep tripping up over Eddelrittuo's name just call her "El-Dorito" as in the snack food. Or [[TokenMiniMoe Mini-Maid.]]
** Thanks to her hair color, Lemrina from the second season has become "Pink" or "Pinkie". Her short but fluffy hairstyle has also earned her the nick "Garlic Princess".
*** Another popular one is "Lemons"/"Lemmy".
** Marylcian and Barouhcruz are "Mary" and "Bary" since their names are difficult to spell.
*** Barouhcruz also gets "[=BROcruz=]" for [[spoiler: his surprising loyalty in choosing to stay with Slaine during the finale, despite previously antagonizing him]].
** Then there's [[Film/LawrenceOfArabia "Mazurek of Arabia"]] thanks to him spending a few episodes [[http://i.imgur.com/bM8v5wj.jpg wandering the Arabian desert]] in search of his Landing Castle.
*** He's also known as "Count Book" for the scene in the second intro showing him reading several books.
*** Because Count Mazurek's Kataphrakt's name was never uttered in the series (it's officially called the Sirenum), fans have taken to calling it the [[MemeticMutation "Darude Sandstorm."]]

This was almost a year before she gets two StarMakingRole one after another [[StarMakingRole became famous]] in 2015 and 2016's 2016 as [[LightNovel/DanMachi Hestia]] and [[LightNovel/ReZero Rem]].Rem]], both of whom are also cute lolis.

* SpecialEffectsFailure: Both fans and detractors agreed that the way the show [[TwoDVisualsThreeDEffects handles]] almost all the mechanical equipment (with the exception of that one time on the episode 2) were jarring and wished that they could've done better with it. Issues like poor and inconsistent framerate pacing, and poor implementation of CG in the mechanical design is apparent in this show, so watch it with caution.
** The first Manga adaptation takes it even worse. The artist decided to blend in the already embarrassing CG models into a static 2D panel that blends even worse than the anime, awkward shots and positioning that makes the entire thing done in VideoGame/GarrysMod, and other issues that doesn't always involve the CG. It's so bad that they're hired another artist to do the second season part.
* TheyCopiedItSoItSucks: The story and characters really does feel like a copy-and-paste of ''Anime/CodeGeass'' once you compare the two. For example; one protagonist is a dark haired protagonist who performs insane plans on the fly despite being a teenager, gains a special that allows him to manipulate things to suit his plans better, and is trying to protect his sister. Even the ending to the first season is almost the exact same, with it being that both protagonist draw guns on each other and their fates being left unanswered till the second season. While it may of been intentional, the similarities make it seem that Creator/A1Pictures and Creator/{{Troyca}} simply were trying to copy the success ''Code Geass'' made since the series had been over for a few years.
** Concept-wise, the show does awful-lot similar to Anime/TurnAGundam and Anime/BlueCometSPTLayzner in some aspects; The opposing force that came from extraterrestrial background [[spoiler:that happens to be related to the Earth all along]], the wide technological gap between each faction[[labelnote:comparison]]Both faction has more advanced military equipment and tactical prowess (debatable for Vers Knights though), with one of them were capable to explore outside of their home galaxy, whereas the Earthlings were usually left with anything current (Gradosian has the SPT and other spatial military devices while Earthlings were still only using jet planes or battleship retrofitted for spatial environmental use. The Vers Empire utilizes the Aldnoah technology for their more advanced Kataprakths that can shred through cities in short time while the UFE were stuck with more conventional gunpowder and a pretty old mass-produced Kats that's inferior to some aspects. The Moonrace utilizes their bizarre Mobile Suit and many other technological advantages towards the Earthers that [[UpToEleven pretty much stuck on the classical World War 1 equipments]], until they got their hand on some hidden mobile suits (and eventually, Moon Race own issues) anyways[[/labelnote]], the resentment from invading faction used as the driving force and motivation to invade earth[[labelnote:comparison]]Gradosian invades Earth under the clause of their own SocialDarwinist view and the inability to see themselves as equals [[spoiler:(especially after it's revealed that they're humans from prehistoric era brought by the real Gradosian and got integrated to their population)]]. The Vers (specifically Rayregalia) resented the Earth's treatment during their developing times in Mars, resulting in string of events that preceeds the ''[=Heaven's=] Fall''. The Moon Race who believed they are the originators of the Earth, and were set to take away earth from it's current inhabitants (not including the fact that Guin has his own plans)[[/labelnote]], their governmental body is ruled by a Monarch in an imperialistic manner, the main character has a relation to the opposing faction, often with the Princess and her Knight dynamics (Inaho and Asseylum, Loran and Dianna, Eiji and her sister Julia by the second half), and many more.
* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter: Arguably Mazuurek, who was shown to be [[PunchClockVillain one of the more reasonable]] Orbital Knights, and could have served as the leader of a separate Vers faction or as [[spoiler:an inside man for Inaho]]. However, after his initial introduction, he's largely absent from the show until he's required for the plot to move forward.

** For some reason, Vers pilots don't wear pressurized suits (or pilot suits whatsoever) while piloting their Kataphrakts in space. One can guess that at least Marylcian realized how useful it would have been wearing one when he got thrown out of his mecha to the space vacuum.
** The Orbital Knights think they are so superior with their technology, that they prefer to toy with their targets rather than getting the mission done (unlike Saazbaum who prefer to slay his targets quickly and without mercy). This give time for the UEA to regroup and Inaho to come up with the miraculous plan to beat them. When caught underhanded, you think they would retreat or change position. No they just stand still and watch in disbelief while they get their asses kicked. Also, the knights fail to realize that something must have gone wrong when they start losing one by one to puny inferior Terrans. Yet, they do nothing to change their strategies or tactics. It's only when Slaine whip them into shape that they become more of a threat, but it comes a little too late to make a significant impact in the long run.
** Most of the time, the Orbital Knights jumps into the fray alone without any reinforcements whatsoever, at least the ones that appeared on-screen. Since Inaho and his peers ganging up against them most of the time, why didn't they look back at that and do the same?

** Apparently Rayet's father genuinely believed he was going to promoted to the nobility for assassinating his own side's princess. There's a reason assassins are usually paid in cash and plane ticket out of the country, rather than fame.

* SnarkBait: The show may run into some problems but it's far from being one, but [[https://animefestival.asia/afath2015/project/aldnoah-zero/ the promotional panel for the [=AFATH 2015=]]] for this show really trying too hard to build up hype among the fanbase that it eventually becomes this. If there's a thread discussing the show (especially at [=/m/=]), expect the screencap of that page to pop up.
