In 2022, after having been working AEW shows without a contract for the past few months, it was announced that Cody would be leaving AEW, alongside his wife Brandi, making him a free agent. At ''[=WrestleMania=] 38'', he has officially come back to WWE, facing Wrestling/SethRollins in his return match. After suffering a serious injury, he returned to win the 2023 ''Wrestling/RoyalRumble'', and went on to lose to Wrestling/RomanReigns at ''[=WrestleMania=] 39'' in the main event for the Undisputed WWE Universal Title. He then would win the 2024 ''Wrestling/RoyalRumble'' becoming the first man since Wrestling/StoneColdSteveAustin to win back to back Royal Rumbles and picked Roman Reigns to face for the Undisputed WWE championship after looking like he wouldn't to allow The Rock to challenge Roman instead. At ''[=WrestleMania=] XL", he finally defeated Roman Reigns to win the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, ending his 1,316 day reign, and becoming the first member of his family to win a world title in WWE.

* DefeatTheUndefeatable: Twice Cody has beaten a previously unbeatable champion in WWE, notably being the same person, Wrestling/RomanReigns. First he pinned Roman for the Tag Team titles in ''October 2013'' along with his brother, Goldust. And over a decade later, he'd ultimately end Roman's 1,316 day world title reign at ''[=WrestleMania=] 40'', winning his first WWE World title and being the first member of his family to do so.

* FromNobodyToNightmare: Cody wasn't exactly a "nobody" during his time in WWE thanks to his legendary family legacy, and he accrued a fairly decent resume there, but he was never given a chance to make it above the midcard and ultimately left because he knew he would never fulfill his potential if he stayed. On leaving, he worked his way up through the indies and other leading promotions like ROH and NJPW to become a big name, until eventually becoming one of the founders and the top babyface of AEW, putting him squarely in the top tier of the industry. He's become ''the'' standout example of a wrestler leaving the monolithic WWE machine to become a far bigger star outside of it than they ever could have come within it.

* FromNobodyToNightmare: Pun Aside, Cody wasn't exactly a "nobody" during his time in WWE thanks to his legendary family legacy, and he accrued a fairly decent resume there, but he was never given a chance to make it above the midcard and ultimately left because he knew he would never fulfill his potential if he stayed. On leaving, he worked his way up through the indies and other leading promotions like ROH and NJPW to become a big name, until eventually becoming one of the founders and the top babyface of AEW, putting him squarely in the top tier of the industry. He's become ''the'' standout example of a wrestler leaving the monolithic WWE machine to become a far bigger star outside of it than they ever could have come beome within it.it. As if recognizing this, when he left AEW in early 2022, Wrestling/VinceMcMahon himself would personally invite him back to the company, with his entire presentation developed outside of WWE intact, something generally unheard of and Cody would instantly become one of the company's top stars, culminating in ''finally'' winning his first world title within the company in 2024. It can be more than a little jarring to know that [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} Stardust]] is one of the most popular stars of recent memory.

Added DiffLines:

* IJustWantToBeSpecial: This is the character arc of Cody's entire wrestling career, both in and out of kayfabe. Cody debuted knowing he had big shoes to fill with a famous father like Dusty, and had high aspirations for himself. Unfortunately, while he's had his fair share of success, it was pretty clear that the powers that be did not see much in him and Cody was never put into the main event scene, often being used to put over much more popular stars and being used as comic relief. This culminated in his departure from WWE after his father's untimely passing in 2016, where Cody spent time going across the Indies to find himself and develop his craft to prove to his doubters and himself that he had what it takes to reach the top. In 2019, Cody would be one of the co-founders of AEW, the biggest rival organization to the WWE since WCW and became one of its top faces in the process. He would ultimately return to the WWE in 2022 and instantly became one their top stars, rivaling Wrestling/SethRollins, Wrestling/BrockLesnar and even Wrestling/RomanReigns.

No other Wrestle Mania name on this page uses Roman numerals, so we should stick to precedent and use normal numbers. Makes things less confusing.

2024 rumble winner babyyyy

In 2022, after having been working AEW shows without a contract for the past few months, it was announced that Cody would be leaving AEW, alongside his wife Brandi, making him a free agent. At ''Wrestling/WrestleMania 38'', he has officially come back to WWE, facing Wrestling/SethRollins in his return match. After suffering a serious injury, he returned to win the 2023 ''Wrestling/RoyalRumble'', and went on to lose to Wrestling/RomanReigns at ''Wrestling/WrestleMania 39'' in the main event for the Undisputed Universal Title.

** Wrestling/RomanReigns initially became a foe simply from being the sitting champion when Cody won the 2023 Royal Rumble. Things got a whole lot more personal after Cody was cheated out of victory in the ''main event'' of ''[=WrestleMania 39=]'', pushing Cody into a yearlong quest for a rematch capped off by being only the fourth in history to win back-to-back Rumble matches. Not even a detour brought about by the return of [[Wrestling/DwayneJohnson The Rock]] lasted long before Cody planted his feet and reaffirmed that he was coming back for Roman. "Finish the Story" began with winning a world title, but Cody indicated that Roman ''made himself'' part of that story and the road now went through him.

* GuestFighter: Of sorts. Despite being a WWE talent, he still appears as a member of the launch roster for ''AEW: Fight Forever'' (as an unlockable wrestler), which was released a year after his return to WWE. This makes Cody the first wrestler to have appeared for two different wrestling games between rival promotions since the ''Attitude Era''.

* FirstNameBasis: Since leaving WWE, he has dropped Rhodes from his ring name in bigger name promotions (such as Wrestling/ImpactWrestling, Wrestling/RingOfHonor, and Wrestling/NewJapanProWrestling), as "Cody Rhodes" is supposedly owned by the company. (Supposedly, that is, because he'd legally changed his name to Cody Rhodes back when he was 17 years old, but this wasn't widely-known at the time and he's not willing to take them to court over it.) That said, he has found certain ways around it: for example, as his wife Brandi has worked under her married name post-WWE, Cody can on a technicality be referred to as a Rhodes through her, sometimes collectively billed as Cody and Brandi Rhodes. However, he is billed as a Rhodes in spite of this: English commentary for Wrestle Kingdom 11 acknowledges his familial ties as well as his brief ROH feud with Steve Corino. Additionally, outside of those bigger name feds, he is fully introduced as Cody Rhodes with no problems. This lasted until November 4, 2020, when he announced at the end of an Wrestling/AllEliteWrestling ''Dynamite'' taping that he is finally legally fully allowed to go by Cody Rhodes again, which he immediately proceeded to take advantage of at the 2020 ''Full Gear'' three days later.
