In 2016, Runnels asked for and was granted his release from WWE. He has since embarked on a busy indie career, making appearances in Evolve, Wrestling/ProWrestlingGuerilla, Wrestling/{{TNA}} and various other indie promotions under the names '''Cody''' or '''Cody R''' (due to legal reasons, he cannot use the Cody Rhodes name outside of WWE). He was announced to be the newest member of the Wrestling/BulletClub in Wrestling/NewJapanProWrestling as announced by the group's leader Wrestling/KennyOmega, and made his debut for the faction in the January 4th Tokyo Dome show. [[spoiler:As of ''Best in the World'' on June 23, 2017, he is now a one-time Wrestling/RingOfHonor World Champion.]]

* FirstNameBasis: Since leaving WWE, he has dropped Rhodes from his ring name in bigger name promotions such as [[Wrestling/{{TNA}} Impact Wrestling]], Wrestling/RingOfHonor, and Wrestling/NewJapanProWrestling, as it is owned by the company. That said, he has found certain ways around it: for example, as his wife Brandi has added Rhodes to her ring name post-WWE, Cody can on a technicality can be referred to as a Rhodes through her (in TNA, they are collectively billed as Cody and Brandi Rhodes). However, he is billed as a Rhoses in spite of this: English commentary for Wrestle Kingdom 11 acknowledges his familial ties as well as his brief feud with Steve Corino in Wrestling/RingOfHonor. Additionally, outside of those bigger promotions, he is fully introduced as Cody Rhodes with no problems.

* BreakupBreakout: In regards to Legacy, he has fared much better than Wrestling/{{Ted DiBiase|Jr}}, who in 2013 left the company. After the split Cody became Dashing, while Ted was given his father's gimmick, which didn't help him much. He then teamed with Cody again during Cody's disfigurement gimmick, only to grow tired of the "undashing" Cody's abuse, turn face and develop the [[SpoiledSweet DiBiase Posse]] gimmick, and it looked like he would avert this. Sadly, injuries in the middle of a push halted all this and he ended up leaving WWE after a year of not being used. Cody, meanwhile, at least got two tag team title runs with his brother Goldust before calling it quits in 2016.

* MindScrew: Because he was revealed as Ted [=DiBiase=]'s secret partner in the same match where he teamed with Hardcore Holly only to turn on him, he technically ''defeated and was defeated by himself.''
