La Noche is the identical twin sister of La Muerte, and rules over the Land of the Unknown; a level of the underworld where the souls of supernatural beings go when they die. She married El Chamuco, Xibalba's older brother.

The land of the unknown is characterized by four geographic features: a vast cool desert, an emerald jungle, a near infinite coastline and a pale spiral city crowned by la noche's moon palace. The Pale City is shaped like a giant spiral seashell and tiered like minas tirith. Inside live the more social creatures of her realm: the john and janes does of humanity, and all the unknown writers and artists who never quite made it. Undiscovered plants and freshwater fish flow through perfumed gardens and graceful fountains. It is a place of art and music and illumination in the land's eternal twilight.

In the mountainous jungle behind the city reside the alebrijes, the strange magical creatures of dreams and mexican folk art. Alongside them are all the undiscovered and elusive cryptids that favor the solitary life, but come to the city once a year for the day of the dead celebration.

the sea is full of the souls of the mythical; selkies, kraken, mermaids, sea nymphs, sirens, hippocampi, sea serpents, and many many more, along with all the species mankind has yet to name that dwell in the deepest blues.

the deep desert holds the souls of those unwelcoming of or dangerous to human company; the hydras, evil dragonkind, wyverns, goblins, demons, kappa and chupacabra. la muerte's wolves, foxes and coyote spirits prowl the borders, herding the more malicious away from the Pale City.
