''Superman vs The Elite'' is a movie in the DCUniverseOriginalAnimatedMovies line based on the ''Franchise/{{Superman}}'' story, "What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, & the American Way?", centered on the Man of Steel dealing with a new group of anti-heroes called "The Elite", who kill criminals, earning them public acclaim. Superman opposes this, and attempts to take them down before things get worse.

* AnythingThatMoves: Menagerie. Her teammates actually point it out when she finds something unattractive.
* AscendedExtra: Lois Lane has more protagonism and screen-time in the movie than the comic.

* BewareTheSuperman: The Elite embody this. [[spoiler:Then towards the end, Superman appears to decide their way is the right way and he [[BewareTheNiceOnes becomes as scary as Doomsday or Darkseid]].]]

* BloodFromTheMouth: Superman of all people is not immune to this, courtesy of the Elite's powers.
* BodyHorror: Menagerie comes of this due to the grotesque symbiotic alien bioweapon that she is bonded with.

* BritishEnglish: There's even a brief soccer/football argument.
-->'''Coldcast:''' Only thing shuts him up is a soccer game.
-->'''Manchester Black:''' Football, you uneducated yank.
* BrokenPedestal: Manchester Black and the rest of the Elite deeply respect and admire Superman, [[spoiler:until their actions force him to behave like them and they treat it like an enormous betrayal.]]
* CoolStarship: "Bonnie", an organic ship that can teleport between dimensions and looks like a giant fish.
* CurbStompBattle: Subverted [[spoiler:in that the Elite are certain they've defeated Superman this way.]] Played straight [[spoiler:afterwards by Superman in finally dealing with the Elite.]]
* DeadpanSnarker: Lois Lane, of course. Clark has his moments too:
-->'''Lois''': If she knows anything, I'm the MartianManhunter.\\
'''Clark''': There go all my fantasies.
* DeathByAdaptation: [[spoiler:Atomic Skull]].
* {{Deconstruction}}: The movie explores the MightMakesRight, PayEvilUntoEvil philosophy of DarkerAndEdgier [[AntiHero anti-heroes]] and the [[BewareTheSuperman ramifications]] of superheroes placing themselves above the law. Superman even [[LampshadeHanging lampshades]] it.
-->'''Superman:''' How does it feel, Black? How does it feel to be deconstructed?
* DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment: This exchange regarding Superman's in-universe show:
-->'''Clark''': Proceeds from the show go to charity. And yes, I have someone looking in on it and yes, we have an iron-clad contract.\\
'''Lois''': And do you have creative input?\\
'''Clark''': --Did I mention that the proceeds go to charity?
* DoNotDoThisCoolThing: Played with in-universe. Superman tries to convince the Elite to refrain from exercising their [[WhyDontYaJustShootHim own brand of justice]], despite the fact that they're getting worldwide public approval and support for it.
* {{Expy}}: The Elite are based upon TheAuthority.
** Manchester Black is specifically based on Spider Jerusalem from ''{{Transmetropolitan}}''.
* {{Eagleland}}: Superman's usual slogan of Truth, Justice, and the American Way, but it takes on a different meaning depending on the context. Flavor 1 if Superman or someone sympathetic to him is saying it, but it takes on somewhat more unpleasant implications in the hands of a commenter weighing in on the debate about Superman and the Elite. Then Black takes the opportunity to sarcastically comment on the US Government and the "American military capitalist way".
* EvilIsEasy: Superman refers to this when justifying his moral code.
* EvilLaugh: When ''Superman'' pulls one on the Elite, it's safe to conclude that they're [[BewareTheSuperman way beyond screwed.]]
* EvilLawyerJoke: Atomic Skull cracks one when he mentions the people he's killed in order to draw out Superman.
* ExplosiveDecompression:

** EvilGenius: The Hat
** DarkChick: Menagerie
* FamilyFriendlyFirearms: The bank robbers in the [[ShowWithinAShow Superman cartoon]] wield cartoonish laser guns, likely in mockery of the censorship many superhero shows once faced.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: Manchester Black, courtesy of British intelligence. The other members of the Elite are implied to have similar backstories.
* GettingCrapPastTheRadar: Early on, when Lois comments on a corny Superman cartoon. She's understandably concerned that the studio may be profiting from the name "Superman" and tells Clark, "You need to protect your 'S'."
** When looking at an old lady claiming to know one of the Elite:
--->'''Lois''': If she knows anything, I'm the MartianManhunter.\\
'''Clark''': [[PowerPerversionPotential There go]] [[ShapeshiftersDoItForAChange all my fantasies]].
* HeWhoFightsMonsters: [[spoiler:Superman eventually decides to give the Elite an object lesson in this.]]
* IAmNotLeftHanded: Early in the film, Superman is getting tossed around by a bioweapon until Black points out that it isn't alive and tells him to stop holding back. Superman kills it in seconds. Later, Superman appears to be nearly outmatched by the Elite and Atomic Skull [[spoiler:to the point where the Elite think they've killed him in a CurbStompBattle]]. Since they've apparently forgotten the earlier incident, [[spoiler:[[BewareTheSuperman he demonstrates just how outclassed they are.]]]]
* ILoveNuclearPower: Atomic Skull.
* IronicName: "The Elite". They consist of a [[AntiHero violent sociopath]], a destructive [[TheBrute brute of a man]], a biological horror who is also a [[AnythingThatMoves nymphomaniac]], and an [[TheAlcoholic alcoholic]] magician who barely gives a damn most of the time. While government trained, they don't exactly behave as flawlessly as you'd expect their team name would imply.
* LanternJawOfJustice: Superman.
* LightningBruiser: Coldcast, literally, since his power is manipulating electromagnetism (although unlike [[XMen Magneto]], his powers are more about the [[ShockAndAwe "electro"]] and less about the "magnetism"). He also has SuperStrength. Naturally, Superman is as well.
* MakeMeWannaShout: Superman does this to the Atomic Skull when he has him in a bear hug. Supes shouting "'''LET GO!'''" creates a shockwave that not only makes the Atomic Skull release him, but shatters the windows of several nearby buildings and cars. Skull thought it was a nice trick.
* MightMakesRight:
-->'''Manchester Black:''' Rule number one. He who has the power, makes the rules. Obvious.
* MoralDissonance: Manchester Black sees nothing wrong with his extreme methods, yet [[spoiler:he calls Superman a {{Hypocrite}} for seemingly adopting them.]]
* MythologyGag: Although only seen for a split-second, Vera Black's arms are gray, a nod to her comics counterpart Sister Superior. The mechanical arms in the comics were the result of a childhood accident.
* PrecisionFStrike: By British standards.
-->'''Manchester Black:''' (to Superman) You're an inconceivable wanker.
* PsychicPowers: Manchester Black's are so powerful that he can ''punch a hole through a mountain''.
* PullARabbitOutOfMyHat: The Hat, except with demons.
* PyrrhicVictory: [[spoiler:Manchester Black tries to invoke this after Superman's defeated his team, pointing out that his victory has come at the cost of compromising the very principles he sought to uphold. Then Superman reveals it was all an act; the Elite are alive (albeit badly hurt) and his robots prevented any casualties.]]
* {{Qurac}}: Both Qurac and Bialya are at each other's throats in this movie.
* RecursiveFiction: It is established in the film that Superman actively licenses out his likeness for [[ShowWithinAShow animated productions]] in order to help spread his message.
* RecycledSoundtrack: From SupermanDoomsday.
* [[spoiler:RedEyesTakeWarning: Once Superman begins stomping the Elite, his left eye adopts a red tint.]]
* RequiredSecondaryPowers: [[spoiler:As Manchester Black points out, the Hat may have a magical shield, but it's not a self-contained environment. He still needs to breathe.]]
* ScareEmStraight: The Elite attempt this through their use of deadly force. "See, we killed these guys, and we'll do the same to you if you don't straighten up." [[spoiler:Superman demonstrates the flaws in this by pretending to adopt their methods in his battle with them, utterly decimating them and appearing to kill all of them save for Manchester Black. It works.]]
* SelfMadeOrphan: [[spoiler:Manchester Black. See AbusiveParents]].
* SlasherSmile: Just look at the trope image.
* SlidingScaleOfIdealismVersusCynicism: The film thoroughly and intelligently explores this trope. While it winds up picking a side, it never resorts to being {{Anvilicious}} about it and we are still presented with defensible arguments for the opposing side.
* StockFootage: The monitor room in the Elite's headquarters shows scenes from ''JusticeLeagueDoom'', namely the bound and gagged police officers being rescued by TheFlash.
* StylisticSuck: The in-universe Superman cartoon is meant to be painfully cheesy to the point that even Lois points out how badly it sucks.
* {{Superdickery}}: When Superman decides to break his ThouShaltNotKill rule. [[spoiler: It turns out he just knocked out or disabled the Elite and had his Superman robots carry people off to make it appear as if they had died]].
** A lighter example early on; although Superman is a highly ethical and moral hero, he's not above using his superpowers to steal a hot story (usually about himself) from Lois. At least he's honest and upfront about it before he does it.
* TheSymbiote: Menagerie is bonded to an alien bio weapon.
* ThouShaltNotKill: Just like the comic, this is the major theme of the whole movie.
* UnreliableNarrator: Black's past as revealed to Superman is pretty much all a lie.
* VillainTeleportation: The Elite can teleport to space between dimensions, which frustrates Superman to no end.
* VillainessesWantHeroes: Menagarie acts this way towards Superman. Lois is not amused.
* VoiceOfTheLegion: [[spoiler:Superman, while in space. The first indication that the gloves are now off.]]
* WhatTheHellHero: At first Superman thinks the Elite are a little reckless but basically have their hearts in the right place... [[spoiler:until they demonstrate their solution for dealing with Atomic Skull. And then there's [[MoralEventHorizon the way they choose to stop two nations at war.]]]]
* WorldOfCardboardSpeech: Superman's speech to the Elite just reeks of this; extra points for George Newbern delivering another, decidedly more sinister version than the last one.
* WhyDontYaJustShootHim: The Elite's method of beating the bad guys revolves around this. Superman [[spoiler:decides to show them precisely [[BewareTheSuperman why]] a superhero should not do this]].
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: Superman tries this over and over with Manchester Black. It doesn't take.
* [[YouGottaHaveBlueHair You Gotta Have Purple Hair]]: Manchester Black.
