A coolant leak on the ship made it impossible to reach their original destination with their cargo intact, and Kamen diverted the ship's course to correct for it, passing by an unstable sun in the process. The ship was hit by a solar flare as it passed over Vesta.

* UpsettingTheBalance: Kamen's actions (and the human survivor's in general) upset part of the ecosystem on Vesta. This culminates in the finale, when [[spoiler:the Hollow attacks the resurrected Levi, and tries to use it's black tongue tentacle to psychically connect with Levi and overpower them. This backfires as Levi and the yellow mold give the Hollow a mind blast full of the GeneticMemory of their planet, reducing it back to the size of an infant.]]
