The show, originally entitled Lowbrow, began life as a pilot episode that was shown in Creator/CartoonNetwork's 2002 Weekend Summerfest to determine a new [[Creator/CartoonCartoons Cartoon Cartoon]], where it ended up the most popular one. The pilot episode was also shown during Toonami's Giant Robot Week [[note]] when everything and anything giant robot was shown, from Anime/{{Gigantor}} to Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion - yes, ''that'' Evangelion [[/note]], and the show itself premiered on Creator/{{Toonami}}. Action cartoon ''Megas XLR'' -- created by the minds behind MTV's ''WesternAnimation/{{Downtown}}'' -- serves up an [[AffectionateParody affectionate spoof]] of "guy culture", science fiction, {{anime}}, and pretty much anything considered "cool" in TheEighties. If you consider ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion'' the {{Deconstruction}} of the HumongousMecha genre, then consider ''Megas XLR'' the Demolition (and, possibly, the American precursor to ''Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann''). ''Megas'' remains one of the few mecha shows to get unanimous praise from Website/FourChan's [[{{Anime}} /a/]], [[WesternAnimation /co/]], and [[HumongousMecha /m/]] boards.[[note]] For 4chan, that ''really'' says something, [[FandomRivalry especially given that those three boards tend to have very divergent tastes.]][[/note]]

* RealityEnsues:
** In "Battle Royale", Jamie is holding on for his life over a [[UnrealisticBlackHole quantum singularity]], with Kiva hanging by his legs. Naturally, Jamie's a wimp. When Kiva tells him [[ItMakesSenseInContext he won't find the planet of the Space Amazons]] if he drops her, he seems to [[HeroicSecondWind suddenly have the strength to pull her up]], only to wimp out shortly after. [[RuleOfFunny Kiva simply climbs him afterward and pulls him up]].
** In "The Bad Guy", Coop's DestructiveSavior habits get him the attention of a group of alien heroes, who think he is a villain endangering Earth. When your heroics leave a lot of destruction in its wake, not everyone's going to see you as the good guy.
** Subverted in the same episode, when Coop tries to give some extra power to Megas by [[CombiningMecha combining]] with the S-Force's Zorps. While Coop's plan does work (to Kiva's surprise), the S-Force's machines were not designed to combine with Megas, which translates to Coop violently shoving Megas's limbs [[AssShove into the Zorps' rears]] like gloves and boots. This also results in the Zorps getting completely wrecked, their pilots humiliated, and adding so much extra weight that it initially causes Megas to fall over.

* FacingTheBulletsOneLiner: Villainous example, and something of a variation -- a couple Glorft {{mook}} see Megas seconds away from crashing into the mothership, right where they stand through a viewscreen. One turns to the other and says, "I've always [[DyingDeclarationOfHate hated you.]]" [[StuffBlowingUp Cue explosion]].

* FatBastard: Subverted with Coop, who's actually pretty nice unless A) you're a jerk or B) you're a villain.
