** In the eyes of FIMFiction users, a story that has more downvotes than upvotes is automatically bad, yet if critics don't like the movie, then they supposedly need to rethink their views.

* DoubleStandard: [[GirlOnGirlIsHot A ship or clopfic between two females]] tend to get a lot of support and likes, [[HetIsEw het relationships]] and clopfics receive lukewarm and moderate responses, but a ship or clopfic between [[HeteroNormativeCrusader two males results in a lot of downvotes]], with many assuming the gay SlashFic in question to be a TrollFic.

* DeadFic: The site tries to make identifying these easier by allowing authors to mark stories as "Complete," "Incomplete," "On Hiatus," or "Cancelled." However, authors often abandon stories, leave them as "Incomplete" or "On Hiatus," and never get around to updating or canceling them. A few stories have been deleted from the site altogether, though third-party sites like FIM-Fetch allow for reading an archived version.

* DeadFic: The site tries to make identifying these easier by allowing authors to mark stories as "Complete," "Incomplete," "On Hiatus," or "Cancelled." However, authors often abandon stories, leave them as "Incomplete" or "On Hiatus," and never get around to updating or canceling them. A few stories have been deleted from the site altogether.

* AprilFoolsDay: Like ''Blog/EquestriaDaily,'' the site admins always do something for April Fools' Day. Invariably, because they can't seem to find [[SlidingScaleOfSillinessvsSeriousness the perfect mix of silliness vs. seriousness]], they cause controversy.
** In 2013, knighty announced he was leaving the site and that Poultron was taking over the reins. They also announced that they were banning all Human-tagged stories, and were moving all former Human-tagged stories elsewhere. [[InternetBackdraft No one was very happy about the announcement]], and the staff were forced to apologize and explain that it was all a joke shortly after.

** At midnight at the start of April Fools' Day 2015, UK time, they announced changes to the Featured Box that would essentially cement certain authors into the Featured Box if they had more followers by multiplying their heat rating. No one was sure whether or not this one was a prank until Obsolescence posted a [[https://www.fimfiction.net/blog/464174/featured-box-update-faq blog]] explaining that [[BlatantLies it was not a joke in the slightest]] for roughly 2/3 of the post (until the very end where he does clarify that it was just a joke). They also "banned" all stories of a certain (nonexistant) genre, claiming they reduced the overall integrity of the site.

** Case in point, Equestria prereader and site moderator Alextrasza himself had one, as [[https://www.fimfiction.net/blog/608722/a-cloppy-secret he revealed after he announced his retirement from Fimfiction.]]

* PanderingToTheBase: Want to know the quickest ways to get your fic to the front page, even discounting perfect grammar and engaging writing? This, and SexSells. As long as the writing isn't bad and the story appeals to enough people, upvotes and hits will fly in really quickly.

** There are a couple groups--the Royal Guard and the Royal Canterlot Library--whose purpose it is to try and promote good stories. They have official site posts and thus can actually act to promote said stories (though some of the stories they promote still end up being unpopular). EquestriaDaily also frequently serves the same purpose. Other groups exist for similar purposes, but none of those have official status.

* AscendedExtra: Many authors love developing minor MLP characters in their stories. A well-known example is Cloud Kicker: she's a completely insignificant background pegasus in the show, but many Fimfiction users know her as the promiscuous star of Fanfic/TheLifeAndTimesOfAWinningPony.
** Fanfic/RainbowDoubleDashsLunaverse, conceived as an AlternateUniverse version of MLP, was founded on the premise of bringing minor/background characters into the spotlight, while putting the stars of the real show in the background.

* FanVerse: Implicitly, any single story of an author can be considered to occur in its own continuity, thus creating a 'universe' for anyone who wishes to treat it as such. Some authors will make this more explicit and define a canon of their own work (or even multiple canons, if they've created several 'universes'). If a 'verse becomes popular enough, it's generally given a name, either by the author or by fans (for example, the Winningverse, which takes place in the continuity that began with ''The Life and Times of a Winning Pony''). Finally, there are authors who explicitly set out to ''create'' an AlternateUniverse (for example, [[RainbowDoubleDashsLunaverse Rainbow Double Dash's Lunaverse]]).

* MassTeleportation: Stories where either Equestria appears on Earth can be found in bulk as a type of FirstContact. Stories that have Human cities and, in some cases, ''entire countries'' have also appeared, but in significantly fewer numbers.

* DivineDate: Many romance story with Celestia or Luna features this, as does romance involving Discord. There's plenty of stories where the immortals date other, though.
