Donnie has been shown to be more observant than he leads on, so he may well be aware of Eliza's gift and since he can't talk yet is able to keep her secret easily. Lending support to the latter half of this guess, Debbie implies that she at least ''suspected'' that Eliza could talk to animals before the actual reveal.
