While this doesn't excuse Rodney's actions at all. It's revealed his favorite song and the only one he can sing is called "I Want You to Like Me" and it's the one he and Mr. J bond over (until Rodney wants to sing a different song). Even though he brought it on himself for being a jerk, maybe deep down Rodney does want Mr. J to like him.
