Considering how Rebuild goes about deconstructing fan desires, and how he finally succeeded in making Rei creepy, he seems set to end things on a note that would kill fan's interest in the series, thus put an end to the franchise for good on his terms. There's been at least one known key thing that would do this: [[spoiler: It's not Asuka, Rei or even Misato that Shinji ends up with but Mari, who's despised by various hardcore fans and shippers for various reasons.]] With this and other possible final spites toward the fans, they'll lose interest and thus the series can truly die and Anno be freed from its shadow after being tied to it for over 20 years (likely the basis for the "Curse of EVA").

Okay, so. We have four giants of light, the Adams that triggered Second Impact with the Spears. Something happened to them, and now they're gone, or have been turned into Evangelion Units. EVA 01 is one of them, EVA 13 is another, Mark 06 was probably one more, and the Key of Nebuchadnezzar is the remains of the fourth. Gendo is trying to reawaken all of them. We've already had EVA-01 "awakened" into a giant of ligh. With the awakened EVA 13 having absorbed what was left of Mark 06, it counts as two in one. Gendo is more than likely going to use the Key to merge himself with EVA 13, becoming essentially three Adams in one, and then pilot it to find and merge with EVA 01, becoming a god, and forever merging his soul with Yui. This would undoubtedly kill off what life there is left on Earth, but why would he care about that?

* The Title is "Thrice Upon a Time". This is the same title as a science fiction novel by Creator/JamesPHogan. The plot revolves around the invention of a device that can send messages back in time and the ramifications of its repeated use.

* Probably Jossed as of ''3.33''. Fourteen years of piloting EVA in a post-Third Impact wasteland have relegated her to [[BrokenBird]] status, but she appears to have come out of the ordeal psychologically stable, if not bitterly hardened [[YoungerThanTheyLook as she approaches her thirties]].

* Instead of 4.0, the number is specifically 3.0+1.0. The meaning to this? It signifies a plot that bridges from the end of the third movie to beginning of the first movie.

** Or Shinji will finally snap from the constant physical abuse, kill most of WILLE, and take Asuka hostage to interrogate her for information, before raping and killing her. Yeah, Shinji's gonna be THAT depraved in Final.

And became the missing Eleventh Angel, forcing Wille to kill her to stop another Impact from happening. Nerv shows up and salvages her soul out of the dead Eleventh Angel into several Reis in a row, who all end up dead, until the ninth Rei, Rei Q ('kyuu' is Japanese for nine), who is the one alive during 3.0 and the one Shinji meets.

*** I know the EVA 01 is a clone of [[spoiler: Lilith]] but when EVA 01 ones goes apeshit and angel mode Shinji is usually knocked out. In this, [[UnStoppableRage he is pissed]] and his [[RedEyesTakeWarning eyes turn bright red]]. Could the EVA turned into him something more than human? is he gonna start [[Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann combining all the [=EVAs=] and create drills made out of AT Fields?]] We won't know until we get 3.0 and 4.0

I only can support this with the ending of EVA 2.0 and most of 3.0: "Saving Rei" was akin to being hired to work on Nadia: A long series? with a huge budget? that's GREAT! a crowning moment, a bright, better future and untold oportunities.
But everybody knows that working on Nadia did indeed broke down Anno. It broke him so mucho that if you see the "Evangelion Proposal" document, the idea that the young and motivated anno had, and the final thing, the Evangelion we all know, they have almost nothing in common!

A new character could appear: The Mature Anno, this Anno from the XXI Century, and would teach Shinji AND Gendou the rights AND the wrongs of their ways, and learn the true, mature and brightest way to live.
Then, the three parts of Anno Psyche, his innocence, his discipline, and his love, would work together and pilot their respective mechas in battle, not to fight Angels, But DEMONS: EVERY LAST ONE of Anno's inner demons.
** This will happen while A Cruel Angel Thesis is being sung by none other but Music/JAMProject, and with that spectacle, [[SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome even the heavens will cry in joy]].

Besides bringing Shinji hapinness. He surely did not wanted [[spoiler: the third impact to happen at the end of 2.0. That is, the version of the Third Impact that involved Unit-01 (made from the body of Lilith?), Lilith's soul, a Lilin and an Angel, which look like something Gendo would be satisfied with. He does not seem to be willing to stop the Third Impact from happening between 2.0 and 3.0 (the one with Lilith's body and an Angel), since Mark 06 needed to be automatised to do the duty. Then, in 3.0, he happily jump on a journey to use one of the Adams (Unit-13, a Lilin, an angel (himself), the Spear of Longinus (anti-Lilith weapon) and the Spear of Cassius (anti-Adam weapon, maybe?) to perform a Reverse Impact somehow.]] None of this is coherent, but it may be sure to assume that:
