[[WMG: .]][[WMG: Creator/HenriDeToulouseLautrec's alcoholism & death were caused by the events of the film]].
The opening flashback reveals that the story takes place in 1899. This is the same year Toulouse-Lautrec's alcoholism started to effect his health leading to him collapsing, being committed to a sanitarium, and his death in 1901. What finally pushed him over the edge to drink himself to death was Satine's death and Christian's heartbreak as he was good friends with both, the closing of the Moulin Rouge, and the dilapidation of the Bohemian neighborhood by 1900 as seen in the films opening.

*Nini's lashing out against Christian and Satine might be related to this -- seeing Satine seemingly have it both ways with both a wealthy patron and a penniless Bohemian on the side, at the same time as she plays the romantic heroine opposite Nini's own ex-lover in the ShowWithinAShow. Either might be enough to foster spite, but both together won't end well.

* Not just Christian, but Zidler, the Duke, and anyone close by. From the CDC website: ''"TB is spread through the air from one person to another. The TB bacteria are put into the air when a person with TB disease of the lungs or throat coughs, sneezes, speaks, or '''sings'''. People nearby may breathe in these bacteria and become infected."'' Maybe the Duke wasn't the one to shut down the Moulin Rouge, but it was shut down after he, any of the workers, or even some of the audience members during the finale died of tuberculosis after. It could take anywhere from several years to a few weeks, but either way, [[YourDaysAreNumbered Christian doesn't have much time left.]]

During "El Tango de Roxanne", she seems shocked and a little hurt when the Argentinian calls out "Roxanne". Why? Because it's her real name, which she had only told him. This is his way of slut-shaming her.

During the "Tango de Roxanne", the Argentinian seems genuinely angry about a failed relationship with a courtesan. He sings this song to Nini and tangoes with her, becoming more violent as the tango progresses. When Nini tells the Duke that she doesn't understand why Satine's character in ''Spectacular Spectacular'' would fall for a penniless citar player over a the Maharaja, she is implying that she wanted to be with the Argentinian, but the money in dancing and prostitution was better.
