** Additionally, as there hasn't been a classic ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros'' game since ''VideoGame/SuperMarioWorld'' (which was released nearly 10 years ago at the time), Nintendo may have felt that there needed to be more to Luigi's character than just existing as an extra player character or as a prop character... A little fun guessing, but this weird idea popped in my head about Bowser and/or Bowser Jr. rewarding the captains

What was the first thing the fake Millennium Star do after crashing to the Mushroom Kingdom? Trap everyone inside a toy box, then tell them that he would make one of them the Superstar of the Universe. Notice how he barely (if ever) mentions anything about getting them ''out'' of the toy box at all, and if you go in Peach's Castle, he's basically taken over the place with multiple pictures of himself in the top floor room. It honestly feels like the fake Millennium Star didn't really intend to let anyone win his contest because due to having the Millennium Star's legend on his side, as long as there's no winner, he's essentially on top of the world. His original plan for the player is to go through seven Battle Royale boards, but only five of them happen before his plan is completely derailed by Daisy relegating the Beauty stamp to a Duel Map and Waluigi stealing the Mischief stamp and dragging the player to Waluigi's Island, his own board. It's my theory that had these events not occurred, the Millennium Star's final two boards would've somehow been made incredibly hard to win so the player's run would be cut short, making their progress worthless and forcing them to start over. Daisy and Waluigi were [[SpannerInTheWorks Spanners In The Works]] and forced the fake's hand, causing him to challenge the player to Stardust Battle out of panic and, when that failed, sheepishly admit the truth and run away. His intentions might not have truly been evil, maybe more out of a misguided desire for attention, but it still gives off the impression that the fake Millennium Star was trying to establish his own sort of rule.

Because of their dedication in the game the four starred in to rescue Bowser and the events of ''VideoGame/BowserJrsJourney'', Bowser decides to eventually let the captains join in on the fun (though of course they have to leave the flags behind temporarily).

* It arguably makes more sense for Luigi to be the protagonist here than any of the other characters as at the time, they've all established themselves as distinctive characters, whereas Luigi was still largely an under-utilized, flat character. [[WMG: Each board in Mario Party 2 has a canon winner]]
*Pirate Land-Wario. He's fought against pirates himself. Pirates are also associated with treasure, one of Wario's favourite things.
*Western Land-Peach. The board's main feature is a train, Peach is a [[DamselInDistress damsel in distress]] and in old western movies, they'd often end up [[ChainedToaRailway chained to a railway]]
*Space Land-Donkey Kong. Entirely because [[ApesInSpace apes in space!]]
*Mystery Land-Yoshi. The board features the players as archeologists. Yoshi is some sort of dinosaur. Even though that would be paleontology, it still seems fitting.
*Horror Land-Luigi. Even though Luigi's Mansion hadn't come out until over a year later, he would later go on to be associated with ghosts and other scary things.
*Bowser Land-Mario is Bowser's ultimate rival. It seems fitting that he would be the hero in the final fight

* All [[LetsPlay/TheRunawayGuys TheRunawayGuys]] jokes aside, this theory is easily the weakest of all the ones on this page, but in Mario Party 2, Wario is adamant about his belief that "[[{{Egopolis}} Mario Land]]" should be called "Wario Land" instead, since "he was the Superstar" and deserves the title. Whether he was trying to make a general claim about his greatness or referring to his actual position in the original Mario Party is unclear, but while his claim sets off the plot-inducing argument in the intro, no one directly addresses him to oppose his assertions, though they also call themselves the "Superstars" during their attempts to receive ownership of "Mario Land." All in all, there is a fleeting chance that Wario was indeed the winner of the original Mario Party (about 25%, specifically if one considers Wario to be talking about Mario Party 1 and the others about their general merit).

** And after his shyness started developing, almost everything else we know and love about him came to shine later on, too, like his undeniable '''love''' and '''kindness''', decisive '''strength''' and '''courage''' when necessary, and even unexpected '''wit''' at times - all motifs of the Star Stamps he can potentially replace.
** In fact, the only Star Stamps he can't replace, Beauty and Mischief (perhaps the characteristics he least fits into out of all the Star Stamps, fittingly enough), are locked to Daisy and Waluigi, two characters sharing more significant relationships with Luigi than anyone else of the cast, and perfect matchups for him in the story mode as a result.

* A much weaker claim than Luigi's above, considering that there is nothing that could be considered any form of "evidence" until the sequel, but Mario Party 4 was the very last game DK would be playable in [[TheBusCameBack until 10]], during which he would ascend to the position of what is, in essence, a direct counter to Bowser. In Mario Party 5, DK, after his victory, may have gained the right from Eldstar after his victory to ascend to a higher position in the game than usual, since it took place mainly in dreams where the rules can be bent to one's desires, and DK felt satisfied enough to remain where he was until 10.
