''Grisaia no Meikyuu'' is the sequel to the Frontwing title ''VisualNovel/GrisaiaNoKajitsu''. Declining to follow any ending, it instead follows a path not explored in the game in which Yuuji solved everyone's problems, but does not appear to have romantically committed himself. The beginning of the story establishes that he is unexpectedly attempting to gain a promotion, a detail of little apparent importance given that it is mostly an excuse to examine Yuuji's backstory.

Back at Mihama, Yuuji has been [[HandWave uncharacteristically sloppy]] and left shredded documents containing earlier drafts of the same report. When the girls discover these documents, they naturally begin to go through them and their ever growing horror continues as they slowly learn what Yuuji's life was really like until the situation there gets so tense that we cease to get cuts to them around a third of the way through the story.

The story is continued in ''VisualNovel/GrisaiaNoRakuen,'' third and final work of the Grisaia trilogy. As of June 2016, ''Meikyuu'' is officially translated and now available on Steam.

** In Sachi's afterstory, Makina, Michiru, and Amane come up with a "couple synchronization quiz" as a fun test on how in-tune Sachi and Yuuji are on the day before their wedding. The quiz actually highlights that the two of them have some rather different perspectives on the future of their relationship, and Sachi actually begins panicking.

Yumiko refuses to go along with it when the subject comes up.she realizes how low her rank would be. They quit when she starts crying.

* MomentKiller: Every time Yumiko and Yuuji try to enjoy a date together, the other girls wander by entirely by coincidence. When they do have a date by themselves, Yumiko realizes she wishes they ''were'' there.

* OccidentalOtaku: Robbie, as discovered by Millie, Yuuji and Danny right in the middle of playing an imouto based eroge. Notably, he’s speaking in shoddy Japanese and Millie can’t understand a word he’s saying. Actually, the pronunciation and content is so bizarre that Yuuji is having some trouble too.
* OlderThanTheyLook: Yuuji is sent in to rescue a female Japanese hostage of unknown age, but assumed to be in middle school. She is, in fact, around thirty as well as being a school principal and a minor VIP.
* OldMaid: Asako teasingly tells JB she better hurry up and ditch her virginity by jumping Yuuji before she becomes an old woman.
* OnlyAFleshWound: Averted. When given an absurdly high powered rifle in order to cover an incredibly long distance in a hostage situation, he aims for the hand of the target. It basically explodes and blood sprays everywhere. Perhaps not lethal, but definitely not a safe, clean wound.
* OnlyFriend: Asako attached herself to JB and began bossing her around, but she didn’t make any other friends. She mainly just annoyed everyone.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: JB is worried when Asako starts being more careful at work instead of cheerfully looking forward to a dog’s death. When the matter finally comes to a head, Asako tells her it’s because her eyesight is failing.
* OreOnna: Captain Garrett, the army woman so tough she could knock out recruits with a hard slap.
* ParentalNeglect: So long as his parents didn’t think Yuuji was getting in Kazuki’s way, they simply ignored him. Once, they took her out to dinner and left Yuuji alone. When Kazuki walked in she saw him eating extremely stale bread softened by water and was horrified. Unlike his father, Yuuji’s mother didn’t hate him or anything. She was just weak and didn't really seem to care one way or the other.
* ParentalSubstitute: After Yuuji is picked up by Asako and JB, they become sort of mother figures to him, though he decides Asako is more like his master than his mother and the other one finds him hot.
* PassThePopcorn: Right in the middle of JB and Yuuji’s squabbling in bed, the screen cuts to a chibi Asako calmly eating some ramen and listening to everything they’re saying.
* PleaseWakeUp: Kazuki’s disappearance and presumed death are basically denied by Yuuji while he sits and waits for her to return so things can return to being simply awful instead of completely horrible.

PlayableEpilogue: Each of cheerfully looking forward to a dog’s death. When the matter finally comes to a head, Asako tells her it’s because her eyesight is failing.

* PleaseWakeUp: Kazuki’s disappearance and presumed death
girls gets their own afterstory, which are basically denied by Yuuji while he sits and waits for her to return so things can return to being simply awful instead of completely horrible.generally light affairs.

* PosthumousCharacter: Yuuji’s family is already dead when the story begins as well as his master and several other characters introduced in the story itself.
* RageBreakingPoint: Yuuji’s father tracks down him and his mother twice. The second time, he starts regressing to his former depression until seeing that his father still has his expensive foreign car and that he’s been living in it. If he’s so foolish and selfish that he never sold it and instead wasted all his time tracking them down to ruin them [[spoiler:then really, he should just die already. Before too much longer, he wants to do it himself.]]

* RedEyesTakeWarning: Heath Oslo’s narrow red eyes are a pretty clear hint that he’s evil. Also the way he’s nearly flirting with an elementary school boy, but also the eyes.

** JB’s ridiculous story in Makina’s route about Yuuji believing he had a devil in his arm has quietly vanished. In fact, if anything, Asako actually urged Yuuji to kill while he found himself unable to do it under normal circumstances. In retrospect, it makes the story she told back then kind of awesome because her boss actually believed such gibberish.

* SanitySlippage: Yuuji’s father’s sanity deteriorates with increasing speed as things go on until he finally dies [[spoiler:after breaking Yuuji enough to murder him.]]
* SarcasticConfession: Most of Yuuji’s answers about himself while at the military school. What crime did you commit to get here? [[spoiler:Killing my parents]]. Why are you so familiar with how the system here is going to work? Raised by a soldier.
* SecretKeeper: Yumiko gradually reveals that she knows why pretty much everyone else is in Mihama, though she doesn’t give out any more details while doing so than is necessary.

* SexyMentor: Asako, though Yuuji ignored her attractiveness until she jumped him in the bath.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: Asako sends JB out to buy dinner and some beer. When she gets back, Asako is walking naked without a care in the world.

* SmarterThanYouLook: Proudly claimed by Asako when she says she actually reads a lot. Somehow, Yuuji just can’t take her seriously.

* TheSouthpaw: Yuuji is left handed, but when he was younger he would ineptly try to use his right hand anyway. Kazuki encourages him to use his left hand more, but also tells him to train his right hand to be stronger and more accurate.
* StalkerWithACrush: After Yuuji shows that he really is a much better sniper than Millie, she begins crushing on him and following him everywhere.
* StunnedSilence: When Asako begins talking about her sex life, JB is loud and shrill. When Asako continues talking about her sex life, her face freezes and her speech ceases entirely until Asako finally quits talking and asks why her face is turning purple.

* TechnicalPacifist: It’s not entirely voluntary, but Yuuji is basically incapable of killing anyone or anything unless he’s drugged to the gills. If he does, he sickens both mentally and physically and even that is next to impossible for him to do. [[spoiler:It’s one of the things JB picks up on when Yuuji is impersonating Asako: Though the work is as stellar as number 9029 is supposed to achieve, it’s all being done non lethally despite orders stating lethal action is perfectly acceptable.]] When put in a situation where it can’t be avoided, he pukes so much that his vomit contains blood and he’s left in a semiconscious daze.

* ThroughTheEyesOfMadness: During his nightmares or just when Yuuji is freaking out, the screen statics out, may turn red and a mistuned radio begins wailing.
* {{Tomboy}}: Asako as a kid. As a result, she was always kind of irritating to adults because she was always causing trouble.
* TookALevelInKindness
** Yumiko is not nearly as distant and hostile as she was during most of Kajitsu.
** After the bus crash, Yuuji’s mother copes with the worsening situation by acting like a proper mother. You might think maybe she cared all along, but it’s noted that beforehand she was cold and distant and that after she started it was just something she could do.

* TraumaCongaLine: Your parents hate you. Your sister dies. Your father starts beating and abusing you even more. You move away and live in a shithole apartment [[spoiler:until you kill your father and your mother claims responsibility for it in a suicide note]]. Then Yuuji ever so fortunate to get adopted by an acquaintance of his father… the terrorist we saw at the beginning of the story before the flashbacks began. Also, a pedophile. Goes downhill from there.
* {{Tsundere}}
** Early on, Michiru somehow manages to use her fake tsundere schtick as part of an actual tsundere moment.
** JB is fond of complaining about Asako and Yuuji. Asako helpfully points out the obvious to Yuuji right in front of her.
* TykeBomb: JB is pretty upset to realize that the assassin she’s tracking is a 'girl' no older than twelve or thirteen.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: Yuuji brags that he’s a match for Asako now in sniping. Three rounds later, he’s 0-3 even though she’s more or less blind in one eye.

* TheUnfavorite: When Yuuji turned out to be much more normal than his genius sister, his parents just told him to stay out of her way and basically ignored him. For awhile, he would avoid her because of this, but she liked him more than anyone else and he responded since she was the only person who found him worthwhile.
* UsedToBeASweetKid: Yuuji used to be a quiet kid that almost literally worshipped his sister and was rather sweet, if distant and withdrawn. Couple years later and he’s a brutal assassin. After that he’s somewhat better, but pretty heavily scarred both mentally and physically.
* VagueAge: Asako and JB are the same age, but what that age actually is is rather unclear. Yuuji’s guess is ‘less than thirty’ back when he was about thirteen. Gee, thanks for narrowing it down for us.
* VillainousCrossdresser: Yuuji has a girly face and became an assassin some around the age of twelve to fourteen, so to get close to targets he would often dress in women’s clothing.
* VillainousCrush: Heath Oslo seemed infatuated with Yuuji as a child, but eventually he's impressed enough with him to act like some sort of evil surrogate dad instead of playing dollies.
* VillainProtagonist: Played with during the terrorist school arc. Yuuji is trained to be a ruthless assassin and pursues the goal wholeheartedly due to his desperate need for praise and general mental illness. He can’t bring himself [[spoiler:to kill his only friend, though she dies anyway]] but carries out several assassinations before being tracked down.

* WeHaveToGetTheBulletOut: Averted, it seems. It is only after Asako’s cremation that a bullet lodged in one of her bones is recovered.
* WhatExactlyIsHisJob: Confused by Asako’s irregular hours and odd behavior, Yuuji wonders what her job could be. His best guess is professional pachinko player, which she's forced to admit would account for her behavior and attitude pretty well.
* WhatTheHellHero: Delivered frequently by JB to Asako but generally laughed off as just being quirky. [[spoiler:However, she’s pissed to hear that Yuuji has been going in and doing Asako’s job while she’s too infirm to do it herself. It turns into a very serious argument with JB comparing her actions to those of Heath Oslo, which Asako can't entirely deny.]]
* WickedCultured: Oslo is a terrorist and borderline pedophile, but damn if he doesn’t have a nice sense of style and an appreciation for art.
* WorthLivingFor: Asako is quite literally the best thing that ever happened to Yuuji. Much to Yuuji’s surprise, when he sees Asako one day he realizes that thanks to her he finally feels he has an actual life to live now.
* WouldHitAGirl: Much to Millie’s irritation, Yuuji has no problem with hitting women who suddenly pick fights with him. In the face too.
* YankTheDogsChain: When [[spoiler:set in single combat to the death against]] his only friend at the terrorist training grounds, they both end up making it out alive because while Yuuji had a superior performance he couldn’t actually finish the job. [[spoiler:However, she’s apparently executed a few weeks later when Yuuji successfully recovers. She even nursed him back to health herself despite surely knowing what was in store for her if she did.]]
* YoungerThanTheyLook: Edward Walker is a huge new recruit that Yuuji figures could never hope to pass for a teenager.
* YourDaysAreNumbered: After a shoulder injury that shouldn’t have been a problem caused the development of venous thrombosis, Asako’s condition was such that she could deteriorate rapidly at any time. Not too long after picking up Yuuji, she ‘retired’ from active service due to her already declining health. However, it didn’t grow bad enough to be noticeable for several years.

* HandicappedBadass: Just months from death and blind in one eye, Asako is still a better sniper than Yuuji.
* HarmfulToMinors: Even before his dad went crazy, he abused Yuuji to the point where even if he ordered him to be Kazuki’s toy, he would do as he was told. Then he gets the lovely time of [[spoiler:seeing his father start to rape his mother, killing his father and seeing his mother post suicide.]]
* TheHeart: Kazuki basically controlled and stabilized the Kazami family. When she was gone, violet self-destruction was inevitable.

* HopelessSuitor: Millie doesn’t have a chance with Yuuji. The first time we see this realization really sink in is when she sees how he talks about his master, Asako.
* HowDareYouDieOnMe: On Asako’s deathbed, Yuuji tells her she’s not allowed to go ahead and die on her own.
* HypocriticalHumor: Right after telling Yuuji that his name is too hard to remember or pronounce, Millie gets offended that Yuuji doesn’t know who she is.
* IgnoredEnemy: “Can you wait until I’m done reading the book I just started before killing me? I’d be troubled otherwise.”
* IgnoreTheFanservice: Troubled by Yuuji’s apparent emotionlessness, Asako strips in front of him to try to get something, ''anything'' out of him. His response? “You’re going to catch a cold like that.”
* IllGirl: She doesn’t look or act it, but Asako’s condition is decreasing throughout the story thanks to a blood clot that is not responding properly to treatment. Nor does she expect it to, though Yuuji was under the impression that her condition wasn’t nearly as serious as it turned out to be.
* ImprobableAge: JB and Ichigaya are not exactly strangers to the idea of child terrorists or assassins. However, they’re astonished that a kid is using brute force solutions like strangulation or sticking a pen into someone’s brain rather than using a gun or explosives. A kid shouldn’t have that kind of strength.
* ImprobablyHighIQ: Kazuki’s IQ was tested when she was around eight. She got a score of 180 with the implication that it was expected to be even higher in the future. It’s a perfectly possible score and there are some much higher, but it’s also 20 points higher than Stephen Hawking or Einstein.
* ImprovisedWeapon
** After passing through a body check to ensure he has no weapons, Yuuji quickly grabs a ballpoint pen and sticks it into someone’s brain.
** Later, after losing his gun and knife, he grabs a stick and [[spoiler:rams it through the eye of the bear that killed his dog.]]

* InstantExpert: Yuuji received very basic gun training as a terrorist, so when Asako asks him to hit a target three hundred meters away he’s nonplussed. The first shot misses, but the second is a direct hit, much to her surprise. With only a little training and before he’s even an adult, Agnes Garrett claims he’s one of the three best snipers she’s ever known, and the other two are dead and going blind respectively.
* IResembleThatRemark: Of course I don’t copy what I read in shounen manga… wait, no, I kinda do.
* ItsAllMyFault: Upon hearing the conclusion of Yuuji’s family, Amane is a crying wreck blaming herself for ‘abandoning’ Kazuki.

* JerkassRealization: Yumiko realized at some point that other people have had it much worse than she did, so she’s apparently given up her self pity and angry rejection of everyone around her.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Asako initially supports assassinating Yuuji, but after he’s captured she’s the one telling JB she needs to follow through and help him as best she can instead of dumping him into a mental hospital and instead volunteers to take care of him.
* {{Keigo}}
** Yuuji is always extremely formal in his speech. Apparently, it carries over to English as well when he's told to knock off the keigo by someone who doesn't speak a word of Japanese.
** He also has to tell Eddie Walker to quit using keigo on HIM. Naturally Danny points out his own constant use of it.

* LethalChef: After Yuuji has recovered enough to respond regularly to conversation, he still refuses to eat. A confused and worried JB tries to cajole him into eating properly and he simply points to the vile filth Asako has produced, which causes her to yell in horror. She is the worst cook that Yuuji has ever met even in the present.
* LetThemDieHappy: [[spoiler:When Yuuji finally gets a semblance of composure at Asako’s deathbed, she asks what he was thinking when he went outside that one night in the middle of the night. Since what he was thinking at the time was more or less ‘I can give trust and life one more chance for Asako and Asako alone’ he says he doesn’t remember. No need to burden a dying woman with more regret.]]
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: When Kazuki was gone, Yuuji’s mother started treating him something like a mother should because it gave her some sort of purpose and way to bear what was going on.
* LoveAtFirstPunch: Yuuji’s first real interaction with Millie involves punching her in the face without warning and then easily besting her at a sniping competition, after which she instantly melts.
* LoveTriangle: Much to Yuuji’s irritation when returning from a day of work, Millie and Danny begin fighting for his attention, though Danny isn't gay. Probably.

* MandatoryUnretirement: Getting put on this list is the closest you can get to actual retirement in Ichigaya. Even when Asako’s health was declining and her eyesight fading it was tough to get on the reserve list and only then because JB was convinced to support her. She was still called in for missions fairly often. Eventually she actually couldn’t fulfill her missions anymore and Yuuji started doing them on his own because not responding to orders would be considered treason.

* ManlyTears: Averted. [[spoiler:When Asako is dying, it’s not dignified tears coming out of Yuuji. It’s inelegant, emotional blubbering. He tells her it’s his right to be a mess when she gently teases him over it.]]

* MoreThanMindControl: Yuuji was controlled through conditioning, drugs and playing upon his need to be accepted and praised.

* MusclesAreMeaningless: Willowy Captain Garrett actually is as strong as you’d expect an army captain to be, but it doesn’t show in her physique. She easily overpowers and cows Danny, the huge black friend of Yuuji, who has no intention of getting dragged into Danny’s punishment. However, it is noted that Danny has a bodybuilder’s physique: Looks impressive, but really not that indicative of actual ability and inefficient.
* MyGirlBackHome: It's not until Yuuji mentions Asako to Millie that she truly realizes that she just doesn't have a chance of winning his heart. He doesn't even call her his girlfriend or anything, but she still knows.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone
** In the middle of [[spoiler:beating his only friend to death]] he realizes that at the moment she looks just like [[spoiler:his mom when she hanged herself.]] The realization does not improve his situation.
** As the story continues, the girls become more and more uneasy and unhappy about their decision to read the documents Yuuji shredded. Further, they feel terrible about things they’ve said or done before like saying Yuuji’s martial arts abilities were cool.

* TheNicknamer: Kazami Yuuji? Too much effort to pronounce for Millie. You’re now KZ Jeannie.
* NoFairCheating: Right after Asako tells Yuuji to use anything he can to obtain an advantage if he isn’t strong enough, he calls for his dog and Asako immediately calls him a cheater when John promptly bites her.

* NoSocialSkills: Yuuji, and for once it’s unrelated to massive trauma. He’s just a little emotionally thick sometimes, so it doesn’t occur to him that JB might be a little troubled by the idea that he’s been using her toothbrush after she said he could use anything in the house.
* NotQuiteTheRightThing: When Kazuki is shocked to see Yuuji eating incredibly stale bread and water for dinner since his mother didn’t bother to make him dinner, she confronted their parents. Their demeanor certainly changed: Now they openly hated him.
* NotSoStoic: Yuuji is generally calm and sarcastic and when he’s upset he’s at least somewhat dignified and gets the job done. Even the death of his sister just made him stoically withdraw and feel somewhat dead inside. [[spoiler:When Asako is finally dying as we had known she would for the entire story, Yuuji breaks down sobbing and begging for her to keep living.]]

* DefinitelyJustACold: Nah, Asako isn’t slowly weakening and dying. She’s, uh, drinking too much. Yeah, that’s it. However, it’s actually a subversion since Yuuji does know her health is deteriorating. He just doesn't realize that she isn't responding to treatment.
* DefusingTheTykeBomb: When first learning of Yuuji, JB wants to help him and Asako would prefer to just kill him. After observing Yuuji and talking to him, Asako declares that he can still be saved, but now JB wants to dump him into a Japanese mental hospital. So Asako basically adopts him and goes into semi retirement.
* DepravedHomosexual: Heath Oslo/Kirihara is an obvious gay pedophile. Even before Yuuji’s life as part of Ichigaya began he was already checking Yuuji out as a target. After he adopts him, he treats Yuuji like his own personal dressup doll, though Yuuji never implies he did anything more than that.
* DespairEventHorizon
** Even after Yuuji [[spoiler:clubs his father with a bottle of sake]] and rescues his mother, after [[spoiler:being heavily beaten and raped]] she doesn’t have the will to really entertain the idea of running again. She just gives up and sits there while telling him to take what money they have and run for it. [[spoiler:When he returns for her, she’s already committed suicide and claimed she killed her husband.]]
** Subverted later when he’s in despair about [[spoiler:a bear attacking John. At first it seems like he’s given up all hope, but then he arms himself and begins tracking the bear. He fails to save John, but ends up with a new resolve and goal in life rather than just loafing around.]]
* TheDitz: Millie. She knows she’s pretty dense, too, to the point where she has difficulty remembering anyone’s names.
* DitzyGenius: When Sachi points out that Sharkman is likely to be a future ally, Makina pauses, acknowledges the exact way in which he’s likely to become an ally (nursed to health after being beaten) and then goes back to cheering for a show marketed towards six years olds.
* DoesntLikeGuns: Heath Oslo has a distaste for guns compared to close quarters combat, so Yuuji’s training in firearms was fairly token. Yuuji also has his own problems with them: They say a weapon should feel like an extension of your arm, but Yuuji feels like an extension of the gun. Cold, simple and machinelike.
* DoggedNiceGirl: Apparently, Millie constantly makes passes at Yuuji and fails every time.
* DoNotCallMePaul: J hates his name, Justin, because there is no justice on the battlefield.
* DoomMagnet: After awhile Yuuji starts to believe that any women near him die.
* DoWellButNotPerfect
** Yuuji was a very good assassin… but he was so good that he caught too much attention and a lot of effort was put into tracking his work.
** He’s advised not to stand out at military school. Do what the instructor tells you and nothing more.
* DramaticIrony: If the reader has been paying attention to everything going on in Kajitsu and some hints from Meikyuu, then they’re likely amused by Asako telling Yuuji that [[spoiler:his sister defining justice]] is laughable. [[spoiler:After all, Asako is JB’s boss if nothing else.]]

* ElegantGothicLolita: Courtesy of Heath Oslo wanting to play dressup with a doll of his own. Check the cgs: That’s not Kazuki with the blank stare and frilly black dress.
* EmptyShell: After being adopted by Heath Oslo, Yuuji was already so traumatized that when dressed up and treated like the world’s most lifelike doll he didn’t react let alone fight back. He just sat staring into space while Heath cooed at how cute Yuuji was. He starts reacting more and gets sent to terrorist school, but after heavy conditioning and drugging he’s back to an empty shell when Asako and JB pick him up.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: After Yuuji impresses him, Heath Oslo has some weird but seemingly genuine affection for Yuuji. He considers him some sort of protégé and genius at the art of assassination and murder. So when he’s praising Yuuji, he really does mean it, judging by his upset attitude when Yuuji [[spoiler:fails his first final exam and pride when he gets it right the second time.]] Not that Yuuji comes out of this ordeal well thanks to his approval: He’s a psychological disaster when proper authorities find him.
* FailureKnight: Yuuji has a deep seated conviction that any women that get close to him will surely die. Considering he gets along much better with women than men to begin with and he’s got some real trouble with being able to get close to anyone. [[spoiler:When he loses his dog (a female, despite being named John) he vows never to lose someone important to him again.]]
* {{Fangirl}: Sachi for sharks
* FauxAffablyEvil: Heath Oslo is a charming, friendly murderous pedophile who laughs at the idea that his pet (Yuuji) [[spoiler:randomly murdered someone for reminding him of his father and gets upset when he won’t kill his only friend after beating her halfway to death already.]] Even if he genuinely seems to like Yuuji, he totally destroys him mentally because that’s what he wants in his protégé.
* FieryRedhead: Millie is aggressive and hyperactive to the point where her sprite begins having seizures when Yuuji messes with her.
* TheFirstCutIsTheDeepest: After living with Asako for some time and being nursed back out of his catatonia, Yuuji awakens once in the night after a terrible nightmare. He walks outside and contemplates simply leaving her cabin and setting off to do who knows what, but decides he’ll give trust one more chance.
* FirstLove: Yuuji’s relationship with Asako is closer Kajitsu would have led most readers to expect. Not exactly family, not just master and student and not quite lovers, but close.

* FriendlessBackground: Yuuji did not have a single friend until he was at least ten and only made [[OnlyFriend that one]] (Sachi) because Kazuki told him to go out and play more.
* FriendlySniper: Asako is weird and kind of unsocial but a lot nicer than captain Garrett. Her student, Yuuji, is similarly odd but again fairly social.
* FriendsWithBenefits: Yuuji and Asako, more or less, apart from the master/student relationship. In the present, JB seems okay with the idea so long as she’s not at work. [[spoiler:Probably wouldn't be a good idea, though: They tried it once after Asako died and it just made them even more miserable.]]

* TheGadfly
** People who like to tease just seem to gravitate towards JB and Asako was no exception.
** Yuuji learned from her, naturally, and has great fun picking on characters like JB or Millie.

* GenerationXerox: JB laughs and laughs because she’s finally realized that Yuuji grew up to be just like her best friend Asako and that they have the same relationship. Except that JB probably never thought to herself “If he proposes to me I can’t turn him down!” about Asako.
* GentleGiant: Edward Walker, a massive farmer’s son who is much younger than he looks and is the kind of person that Yuuji rather likes. He barters away his cigarettes and sends the entirety of his paycheck home to his mother. He also nearly fails out due to failing many of the tests, even a test of grappling ability: He’s never had to fight before and is too kind to want to hurt anyone despite his huge size.
* AGodAmI: Asako tells Yuuji point blank that he better view her as a god. A harsh, vengeful god at that. He does end up declaring that she’s his master since he can’t think of another way to define their relationship.
* GoForTheEye
** Roused from his catatonia for the first time in a long time, Yuuji promptly rips out someone’s eye.
** Lacking any better option, he grabs a stick and [[spoiler:incapacitates a bear with it by jamming it through its eye, though he doesn’t finish it off.]]

* GreenEyedMonster: Kazuki gets irritated when Yuuji’s first friend is a girl, correctly guessing that Yuuji is probably surprisingly popular. She tells him to quit it, but retracts the statement when she sees Yuuji remember his father saying “Fine, if Kazuki likes you then whatever, but you have to be her toy.”

** Kazuki’s genius was already apparent by the age of four. Apart from her intellect, she also made a ‘doodle’ using oil paints with such refined use of color that her father could hardly believe such a small child could do it.
** Though considered a normal child, Yuuji does have his own area of brilliance: He’s an extremely gifted assassin, mental complexes aside. [[spoiler:He’s so good that despite lapses in protocol he’s able to mimic Asako’s work so well that only JB really catches on that anything is even unusual about their ace’s performance.]] Further, when he’s in a small unit later in the story, if he’s relaxed everyone figures it’s safe and if he tenses up and declares an enemy is nearby without any proof they instantly believe his instinct.

* AndNowForSomeoneCompletelyDifferent: After the first three arcs, the protagonist chair switches to JB because Yuuji was in no shape to be observant of the world around him. As the story progresses focus generally shifts to Asako and then finally back to Yuuji as his mental state and memory both begin to stabilize.
* AntiHero: Asako quietly laughs at the idea that her organization is some group of heroes defending people. As she goes to great lengths to try to explain to a clueless Yuuji, she’s more along the lines of black ops or an assassin.

* AwLookTheyReallyDoLoveEachOther: Makina makes fun of Michiru endlessly, but when the latter gets upset and begins talking about suicide (Not saying she’s planning on it, mind you) they have a fight that isn’t resolved until Sachi drags Michiru out of her room to apologize. After initial composure, Makina bursts into tears at the thought of Michiru committing suicide even though that wasn’t what she had been talking about. And then begins insulting her nonstop again.
* AxeCrazy: When Yuuji is sent to Terrorist Elementary School he’s warned not to kill anyone even if he gets mad.
* {{Badass}}: Yuuji at the age of thirteen is strong and fast enough to ram a ballpoint pen through someone’s jaw and into the brain stem. A dying Asako can also easily handle him in return, though it’s noted that it’s not really a fair fight given the differing physiques.
* BadDreams: Even after he’s picked up by JB and Asako, Yuuji is tormented by nightmares.

* BerserkButton: Chizuru is pissed to be mistaken for a middle school student and explodes at Yuuji and Danny, who completely ignore her protests in favor of laughing at her even more.
* BigBrotherWorship: Pretty much literally. Yuuji became so awed by Kazuki that in his own words he began to see her as a god more than a human.
* BigSleep
--> Asako: I’m feeling a little tired. Is it okay if I go to sleep now?
* {{Bishonen}}: Yuuji has girly good looks. When he was around thirteen or so it helped him pass for a girl to avoid detention. And a certain blonde someone twice his age found him rather hot once he had an untold amount of grime washed off of him.

* BloodFromTheMouth: Though it’s not fatal, when forced into a prolonged firefight with no choice but to kill, Yuuji vomits so much that he begins puking blood and blacking out.

* BrainwashedAndCrazy: During Yuuji’s terrorist school days, everyone is already a mentally unstable wreck with only a few moderately decent people. Then they’re drugged, manipulated and taught to kill.

* BrokenHero: Yuuji’s life is one long traumatic line of abuse, though in the present he’s fairly extroverted in his weird, sarcastic way.

* BunnyEarsLawyer: Apparently, the army is exclusively staffed by them. They make Asako look normal. Asako!

* {{Buttmonkey}}: Michiru is the subject of abuse even during scenes that are supposed to be emotional.
* BuxomIsBetter: Hating large breasts? Are you crazy? Yuuji loves them!

* ChickMagnet: The number of girls in the story that don’t fall for Yuuji amountd to… One. Two if you count his mom. And why would you count his mom? That’s just weird.
* ClassClown: During military school, Yuuji and petty criminal Danny are put together in a group because they’re both irreverent, clownish and annoying. Problem child group assembled!

* ClingyJealousGirl: After telling him to make friends, Kazuki is irritated to find out the only one he’s made is a girl, correctly guessing that she probably has a crush on him. She backs off when she sees how seriously he takes her complaints, however.
* CloudCuckoolander: Given a chance to relax, you’ll see how warped Asako’s values were.
** CloudCuckoolandersMinder: JB did her best to teach Asako common sense, but it was hopeless.
* CluelessChickMagnet: Kazuki told Yuuji to be careful he didn’t end up breaking a lot of hearts, something he promised sincerely. At this point, the flashback is interrupted by JB exploding that he didn’t listen to a thing she said. Not having met the girls apart from Sachi at this point, his chick magnet powers are instead turned on his sister, Asako and JB.
* ChildhoodFriends: Asako and JB met when they were eight. Years later, they’re even working together, much to JB’s irritation. [[spoiler:When Asako dies, JB is almost as unable to get over it as Yuuji, prompting an unhealthy relationship between the two.]]

* CombatPragmatist: Sure, Yuuji can match Asako in range. Sneakiness? Experience? Battlefield awareness? Obstruction? Not a chance.
* ComplainingAboutRescuesTheyDontLike: Chizuru’s grateful for being rescued and all, but did you have to cover her in blood? And accidentally drop her in the ocean? And laugh at her struggling in the water since she can’t swim? And poke her head with an oar when she struggled to the pier? In short, no. Man, Yuuji and Danny really are jerks sometimes, huh?

* CoolBigSis: Asako, in a way, though Yuuji explicitly doesn’t view her as an older sister figure.
* CreepyChild: While under the care of Oslo, Yuuji was a largely emotionless doll [[spoiler:except when some guy reminded him of his dad and got his eye ripped out and his head beaten in with a vase for his trouble.]]

''Grisaia no Meikyuu'' is the sequel to the Frontwing title ''Grisaia no Kajitsu''.

The beginning of the story establishes that he is unexpectedly attempting to gain a promotion, a detail of little apparent importance given that it is mostly an excuse to examine Yuuji's backstory.

As such, Yuuji is making a report to his direct superior, JB. The flashbacks begin with our second meeting with his deceased genius sister, Kazuki, and how she dominated the Kazami family and how it proceeded to collapse without her. Separated by brief cuts to the present where he talks with JB, the story also proceeds along to show how Yuuji did not have the world's greatest dad and ended up as a terrorist.

The story is continued in ''Grisaia no Rakuen,'' third final work in the Grisaia trilogy. Neither Meikyuu nor Rakuen has been translated at this time, though the same group that handled ''Kajitsu'' has started on ''Meikyuu''.

The whole time goofy music plays in the background while Asako sits back slurping up some noodles. Naked chibi JB is dragged slowly back into the room.
* BloodFromTheMouth: Though it’s not fatal, when forced into a prolonged firefight with no choice but to kill, Yuuji vomits so much that he begins puking blood and blacking out.
* BloodierAndGorier: A man is killed messily fairly early on via bottle to the head. Another man gets an eye ripped out and his skull caved in by a vase because he was too similar to the first guy.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: During Yuuji’s terrorist school days, everyone is already a mentally unstable wreck with only a few moderately decent people. Then they’re drugged, manipulated and taught to kill.
* BrattyHalfPint: Yuuji has to take care of one for awhile. Her annoying nature nearly gets the better of him until he realizes she’s basically JB in the form of a nine year old and adjusts his behavior accordingly.
* BrokenHero: Yuuji’s life is one long traumatic line of abuse, though in the present he’s fairly extroverted in his weird, sarcastic way.
* BrotherSisterIncest: Kazuki was very… affectionate. Yuuji was too young to know anything was weird about her until much later.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Apparently, the army is exclusively staffed by them. They make Asako look normal. Asako!
* ButLiquorIsQuicker: When JB is understandably hesitant about the idea of sleeping with a fifteen or sixteen year old, dirty old woman Asako tells her to try getting herself drunk first if necessary.
* Buttmonkey: Michiru is the subject of abuse even during scenes that are supposed to be emotional.
* BuxomIsBetter: Hating large breasts? Are you crazy? Yuuji loves them!
* {{Callback}}: Throughout the military school arc, a mildly amused Yuuji mentally compares it to the terrorist training grounds he attended, thinking that no matter where you go a drill sergeant is a drill sergeant. However, this time it’s not a life or death situation, so some casual music is playing in the background. Yeah, yeah, let’s just get this over with.
* CerebusCallback: Near the beginning, Kazuki tells Yuuji that it’d be a good idea to train himself to be ambidextrous. It’s useful to be able to do well with your dominant hand as well as do the unexpected. [[spoiler:Later, he remembers a somewhat twisted version with Kazuki helpfully suggesting a good way to kill his father with a bottle of alcohol.]]
* {{Cliffhanger}}: Meikyuu ends in the present with [[spoiler:JB sending Yuuji a blank text and then not answering any further calls after discovering an information leak. Someone else breaks normal protocol and leans on Yuuji to begin a new mission to snipe a terrorist by the name of Ethan Glow. Only it’s actually Heath Oslo. With Yuuji’s failure to complete the mission, Yuuji is now set for disposal and has been blamed for a terrorist attack]]
* ChildSoldiers: Terrorists like Heath Oslo run a school to raise them. Yuuji excelled there.
* CombatPragmatist: Sure, Yuuji can match Asako in range. Sneakiness? Experience? Battlefield awareness? Obstruction? Not a chance.
* ComplainingAboutRescuesYouDontLike: Chizuru’s grateful for being rescued and all, but did you have to cover her in blood? And accidentally drop her in the ocean? And laugh at her struggling in the water since she can’t swim? And poke her head with an oar when she struggled to the pier? In short, no. Man, Yuuji and Danny really are jerks sometimes, huh?
* ConversationalTroping: As explained to Sachi, Makina knows perfectly well that Shark Man is destined for a HeelFaceTurn, but she ignores this part of her brain because you’re not allowed to cheer for the villain while they’re still a villain.
* CuttingOffTheBranches: What route of Kajitsu does Meikyuu follow? None of them! The story begins with Yuuji deciding to apply for a promotion and having to assemble documents regarding his past for inspection.
* DarkerAndEdgier: Kajitsu at least started off light and was fairly optimistic throughout. Meikyuu gives us escalating child abuse and declining mental health for all parties involved.
* DeadlyGraduation: Want to be a terrorist graduate? All you have to do is [[spoiler:kill the person you’re closest to at the school]] as your final exam.
* DeadpanSnarker: Wowww, what a prize. I am ever so grateful.
* DespairEventHorizon
* DoWellButPerfect
** Yuuji was a very good assassin… but he was so good that he caught too much attention and a lot of effort was put into tracking his work.
** He’s advised not to stand out at military school. Do what the instructor tells you and nothing more.
* DrillSergeantNasty: Garrett and Kuwahara both seem to have some sort of grudge against Yuuji, so he gets an extra helping of the nasty. However, in the end he gets along okay with them.
* {{Fangirl}: Sachi for sharks
* {{Flashback}}: Over 90% of the game is just Yuuji telling JB about his life or her occasionally filling in the gaps for places he can't report on due to mental condition.
* ForegoneConclusion: The majority of the story is set in the past with the assumption that the reader already knows Kazuki died following a bus crash and that his family disintegrated. It’s only after that that we begin seeing parts of the story where we don’t know the conclusion. Even then, though, we know Asako will be dead by the end and Yuuji will have a desire to at least see a normal life for once.
* FramingDevice: Most of Meikyuu barring the after stories is simply a flashback as Yuuji is considered for a promotion and Sachi goes through his trash to read shredded documents.
* FromBadToWorse: Until the age of ten or so, Yuuji was ignored, yelled at and belittled with his only allies being his adoring sister and a girl in the park. When Kazuki was gone, his father went from verbal abuse to beating his wife, drinking and harassing Yuuji even further. After that came brainwashing and being drugged heavily to make assassination easier.
* TheGadfly
** People who like to tease just seem to gravitate towards JB and Asako was no exception.
** Yuuji learned from her, naturally, and has great fun picking on characters like JB or Millie.
* GenderBlenderName: Yuuji named his female border collie John.
* GoForTheEye
** Roused from his catatonia for the first time in a long time, Yuuji promptly rips out someone’s eye.
** Lacking any better option, he grabs a stick and [[spoiler:incapacitates a bear with it by jamming it through its eye, though he doesn’t finish it off.]]
* GoodPeopleHaveGoodSex: Once you’ve got mutual feelings going, sex is apparently supposed to follow soon after. And lots of it too. Mind you, mutual feelings don’t necessarily need to be romantic love. There's one notable exception: [[spoiler:After Asako dies, the sex between JB and Yuuji is incredibly self destructive and poor.]] It was an awful, awful idea.
* HeKnowsTooMuch: Though nonlethal, operatives like Yuuji are not really allowed to retire or have certain relationships, presumably because they know too much about the country's antiterrorism efforts.
* ImprovedWeapon
* InnocentCohabitation: Averted, much to JB’s horror. She assumed that Asako was simply being motherly and keeping a proper distance, but is bluntly informed that she and Yuuji have been sleeping together. Lots. It started as a birthday present.
* {{Jerkass}}: The neighbors around Yuuji, starting with hating him and his mother for clearly having run away from an abusive man and ending with [[spoiler:bitching about how she caused problems to the end by committing suicide.]]
* {{Keigo}}
* LampshadeHanging: Sachi goes through Yuuji’s trash at the start of the story and restores some shredded documents related to his past. Later, when he’s talking to JB about how he put it together, she gets annoyed that he wrote it all out longhand and handed it to her rather than just writing the thing on a computer. Plus, while it’s easy to shred a document, it’s not exactly hard to put it back together. Yuuji’s genre blind response is that nobody could possibly be interested enough to bother.
Probably.
* MaliciousSlander: A judge that is too ethical to accept a bribe is sometimes sent little girls because people think he’s a pedophile. In truth, he just likes helping kids and generally sends the girls back.
* AManIsNotAVirgin: Gender inverted like many of the other sex tropes in this series. JB’s awkwardness and dorky points are laughed at endlessly by Asako, who constantly calls her a virgin when the subject comes up.
* ManlyTears: Averted. [[spoiler:When Asako is dying, it’s not dignified tears coming out of Yuuji. It’s inelegant, emotional blubbering. He tells her it’s his right to be a mess when she gently teases him over it.]]
* MentorShip: At one point, Asako tries stripping in front of Yuuji to try to get some kind of reaction from him and is offended and depressed when he just tells her she’s going to catch a cold. A relationship does eventually start up.
* MonsterIsAMommy: After blinding a bear, a pair of starving cubs come out and just look at Yuuji.
* MoodWhiplash
** Right in the middle of an unusually long flashback of nothing but seriousness and depressing things for little Yuuji, JB suddenly interrupts to yell at him for not being careful to avoid hurting girls feelings.
** A sex scene turns to comedy and then eventually back to sex.
* MoreThanMindControl: Yuuji was controlled through conditioning, drugs and playing upon his need to be accepted and praised.
* MovingTheGoalposts: Asako tells Yuuji that a man who can run fast will be popular in elementary school, so he begins morning runs with no complaints. Next, she tells him a middle school student will be popular if he can fight, so he begins sparring, though he really doesn’t want to and has no idea who he’s supposed to be popular with while living in the middle of an empty forest on top of a mountain. Then she tells him a smart guy will be popular in high school so he should read more and his reaction is simply “Oh come on already.”
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone
* MysteryMeat: JB hesitantly asks what the weird food in the pan is and why it [[PaintingTheMedium has a mosaic]] (though there’s actually no cg of it, so presumably she knew what it was) and gets the answer ‘Deer penis’ at which point JB apologizes profusely to Yuuji for telling him to eat more and demands that Asako eat it herself before she forces Yuuji to try it.
* TheNaytheist: Averted, despite his stance in Kajitsu. Yuuji wonders for the first time about the afterlife after Asako dies and hopes one day he can be with her. After living the long life he can only have thanks to her.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: In the middle of his final exam, Yuuji freezes up and is beaten harshly without attempting to defend himself from his clearly inferior and injured opponent.
* NoNameGiven: Early on we hear a lot about JB’s superior ‘Her.’ It turns out the narrative and characters aren’t just being deliberately obtuse: None of them have met her. It’s forbidden.
* NowForSomeoneCompletelyDifferent: After the first three arcs, the protagonist chair switches to JB because Yuuji was in no shape to be observant of the world around him. As the story progresses focus generally shifts to Asako and then finally back to Yuuji as his mental state and memory both begin to stabilize.
* PoliceAreUseless: Apart from some token help from a domestic violence shelter, absolutely nobody steps in to help Yuuji and his mother despite all the laws his father is clearly breaking. After they’re dead, the police apparently just toss him at the first volunteer, a man who already had a reputation as a possible terrorist and quite the pedophile aura.
* {{Polyamory}}: Asako and Yuuji loved each other and based part of their relationship on such. He tells JB more than once that he also loves her and will always protect her, even mailing her once a very meaningful declaration of love and nothing else. The five heroines of Kajitsu are also largely included in this by virtue of not following any specific route.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: Squadmembers, assemble! Punk general Danny, annoying bimbo Millie, otake megane Robert and aloof cowardly sniper, Kazami Yuuji. United beneath J the motormouth, they’re the Unwanted Children. No, wait, they’re the bush dogs. Yeah! Bush dogs!
* RapeAsDrama: [[spoiler:By the time Yuuji’s father tracks down his family in hiding, he’s so cracked that he attempts to rape Yuuji’s mother with the goal of impregnating her so she’ll give birth to another [[CallBack golden egg]].]]
* RealityEnsues: Yes, with those bodybuilder muscles Danny is physically quite powerful. He’s also slow and easy to tire, which isn’t helped by his smoking habit. Big bulging muscles are not very useful for anything requiring endurance or speed.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Heath Oslo’s narrow red eyes are a pretty clear hint that he’s evil. Also the way he’s nearly flirting with an elementary school boy, but also the eyes.
* {{Retcon}}
** Heart donor girl never existed now. She’s just an alternate personality of Michiru’s. Ignore the inconsistencies.
** Yuuji is no longer an atheist. He at least hopes an afterlife exists.
* RightBehindMe: Annoyed by Captain Garrett’s domineering attitude, Danny begins complaining about her right in the open. Yuuji sees her coming, but this doesn’t save him. Paraphrasing:
--> Danny: What’s with that pretentious woman that always hits you? Does she think pretending to be able to read French will make her look better?\\
Garrett appears.\\
Yuuji: I - I have no idea what you’re talking about. Our captain is lovely, graceful and charming.\\
Danny: What, you some kind of masochist that likes being hit? Only way anyone could find that gorilla attractive is if they were a blind idiot.
* RunningGag: Nobody that isn’t from Japan can even come close to getting Yuuji’s name right even if they can remember it. Danny calls him Shorty, Millie calls him Jeannie (from the ji in Yuuji) and Robbie calls him some incomprehensible mangling of his actual name. Eddy actually can and does get his name right, but he’s usually too busy calling him teacher to use his name.
* SexForSolace: Sometime after Asako’s death, JB and Yuuji realize they aren’t moving on as well as they had thought and comfort each other in perhaps the only way they can. [[SexIsGood Unlike most examples of sex between close people in the story]], this was clearly extremely unhealthy and just makes things worse.
* SexIsGood: Just about everyone has a strong sex drive and this is portrayed as basically a good thing. JB is actually laughed at for being hesitant regarding sex and treated like her virginity is something shameful!
* SexyMentor: Asako, though Yuuji ignored her attractiveness until she jumped him in the bath.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: Asako sends JB out to buy dinner and some beer. When she gets back, Asako is walking naked without a care in the world.
* ShooOutTheClowns
** The first time JB interrupts Yuuji’s story, it’s to have more characteristic banter. The second time, her interruption is nothing but silence and a depressed look even though she already knew everything Yuuji was telling her.
** The story then switches back to the girls that were joking and laughing before and they’re also all silent and wishing they hadn’t gone through Yuuji’s trash. Several attempts are made to resist the humor being quietly murdered, but not even Makina or Michiru can raise the mood. Further cuts to them have their own psychological wounds being brought up including lovely questions like “Why didn’t he just commit suicide and save himself the trouble?”
** Eventually, the clowns are slowly let back into the room after Yuuji is found by Asako and JB. However, they’re different clowns than before: Amane and the others don’t appear again during the brief intermissions.
* SituationalIrony: If the reader has been paying attention to everything going on in Kajitsu and some hints from Meikyuu, then they’re likely amused by Asako telling Yuuji that [[spoiler:his sister defining justice]] is laughable. [[spoiler:After all, Asako is JB’s boss if nothing else.]]
* SmarterThanTheyLook: Proudly claimed by Asako when she says she actually reads a lot. Somehow, Yuuji just can’t take her seriously.
* SoundtrackDissonance: Immediately after a man is beaten to death and partially mutilated, a pretty if slightly discordant music box starts playing. A terrorist walks into the room and laughs about the mess in the room, impressed with what happened.
* SuperDeformed: Right in the middle of the first comedy scene in hours and hours of reading, the scene cuts to chibi Asako observing everything going on while quietly snarking to herself and commenting on Yuuji’s performance. Chibi JB attempts to escape, but it's no use: She's slowly dragged back into the pit.
* ThereAreNoTherapists: What, counseling for the kid that [[spoiler:killed his father and found his mother’s hanged body?]] Bo-ring! Off to the pedo terrorist you go, lad!
* TookALevelInKindness
* TranslationConvention: Though never stated, somehow the reader may find it improbable that not only do a bunch of thugs on their way to an American military school speak fluent Japanese, but also refer to the only Japanese guy on the bus as Chinese. Yuuji apparently forgets that he’s not speaking Japanese at one point and Danny has to remind him that he has no idea what Chizuru has been yelling for the past couple of minutes.
* {{Tsundere}}
* UnequalPairing
** JB is crushing pretty hard on Yuuji, though she’s both his boss and something of a mother figure to him despite certain events between them in the past.
** Turns out Asako and Yuuji also had a thing going, apparently even including mutual love.
* VitriolicBestBuds
** Asako and JB’s relationship is pretty similar to the one that Yuuij and JB have: Lots of squabbling and sniping.
** Yuuji’s only male friend shown is a big black American teen a bit older than Yuuji. During introduction, Danny calls him by a girly name and Yuuji basically responds “Shoulda known that some black punk would have shitty hearing after listening to all that loud trashy music.” This polite correction endears him immediately and the pair end up in an operational cell together.
* WeHaveToGetTheBulletOut: Averted, it seems. It is only after Asako’s cremation that a bullet lodged in one of her bones is recovered.
* WhatIsHisJobAnyway: Confused by Asako’s irregular hours and odd behavior, Yuuji wonders what her job could be. His best guess is professional pachinko player.
