* CompressedAdaptation: The ''Tortured Souls'' OVA compresses a 10-hour (give or take) game into just under 2 hours. To those familiar with the source material, [[AdaptationDecay the results are jarringly clear]].

* AdaptationDecay: One complaint towards the ''Tortured Souls'' OVA is how it turned a slow, creepy, and downright scary story with [[{{Utsuge}} heavy-hitting emotional scenes]] and a decent share of blood and guts into [[CompressedAdaptation an overly-rushed]] [[{{Gorn}} gorefest]]. On top of that, many found the new character deaths ([[DeathByAdaptation including those who don't die in the original version]]) to be more confounding than anything; case in point, [[spoiler:trading out Yui's HeroicSacrifice in favor of a [[DroppedABridgeOnHer dropping a plank of wood on her]]]].
** The same claim has been laid on ''Corpse Party: Musume'', with its rampant fanservice (which really becomes massive amounts of {{squick}} and FanDisservice) the pointless character deaths, introduction of a completely new crossdressing character simply to murder them horribly (with tentacles), and its [[DiabolusExMachina truly]] [[ShaggyDogStory terrible]] [[KillEmAll ending]].

Like the ones [[ClassRepresentative Ayumi]] loves to tell her classmates, much to Satoshi's dismay. No matter how much he tries to be brave, he still spooks easily... and his childhood friend Naomi's not much help, either, giving him even greater grief whenever he gets frightened. Thanks to their teasing, Class 2-9's cleanup after their culture festival takes much longer than anyone else's, and they're all caught in their classroom when a strange earthquake hits, splitting the floor and [[InvoluntaryGroupSplit separating everyone]]... ''CorpseParty'' follows Satoshi, Naomi, Ayumi and the other students who find themselves impossibly trapped in the long-destroyed Tenjin Elementary.

[[VideoGame/CorpsePartyPC98 The original Corpse Party was a PC98]] game made with RPG Tsukuru Dante98. It was later adapted into a PC game released in chapters, titled ''Corpse Party: Blood Covered'', with a reworked plot and new characters. ''Blood Covered'' was later released on the [[{{PSP}} PSP]] as ''Corpse Party: Blood Covered ...Repeated Fear'', with new art, event [=CG=]s, and a different voice cast. This version was localized and released on the {{Playstation Network}} by XSEEDGames on November 22, 2011. When the screen fades black, the player can still hear the sounds of [[{{Squick}} crunching and slurping]].

* InfantImmortality: Considering that antagonists are ghosts of children and the brutal manner in which they were all murders, it's definitely safe to say that this was [[AvertedTrope averted]]

** Chapter 4: [[spoiler: Ayumi and Yoshiki get Yuki's tongue back, and are teleported back to the classroom. Yuki then appears and Ayumi asks Yuki to show her what really happened on the day of her murder. Through an {{Exposition Beam}}, we learn through Yuki's eyes that she was actually murdered by Sachiko(the fourth supposed surviving child), and not Yoshikazu (the supposed killer. All while Sachiko stabs out Yuki's eye.]]

* TitleDrop: In the ''Book of Shadows'' chapter "Shangri-La", [[spoiler:Morishige]] gleefully describes Tenjin as a "Corpse Party" as well as calling it "Shangri-La".[[hottip:*:"Shangri-La" is also the title of ''Blood Covered: Repeated Fear'''s opening theme, making it another reference.]]

The next planned entries into the series are ''Corpse Party: Blood Drive'' and ''Corpse Party 2: Dead Patient''. ''Blood Drive'' will continue the story of ''Blood Covered'' and ''Book of Shadows'', while ''Dead Patient'' will be set in a hospital and feature a new central cast, while still set in the same universe.

* DealWithTheDevil: At one point in the PC-98 game, [[spoiler:Yoshiki and Ayumi]] claim that they've found a way out -- which involves killing their friends to earn their freedom. [[spoiler:Ayumi]] then tries to change the terms of the deal by [[spoiler:backstabbing Yoshiki so she can take ''Satoshi'' instead]]. This turns out to be [[spoiler:just a case of DemonicPossession, though]].
* DemonicPossession: In the PC-98 game, this can happen to [[spoiler:Naomi, Yoshiki and Ayumi]].

* DisneyDeath: In the PC-98 version, [[spoiler:Yoshiki]] is apparently killed at one point via [[spoiler:getting shoved into a pit. He climbs back out while the others are mourning.]]

* UnexpectedGenreChange: At the end of the PC-98 game, the students must face a FinalBoss, the ''only'' battle in the game. Made more difficult by the fact they haven't gotten any ExperiencePoints, meaning they've got about 30 HP each... Fortunately, before choosing your party, you get a chance to learn what everyone's strengths are via an InfoDump.
