* LampshadeHanging: The Pokémon who teaches Pikachu Iron Tail is Primeape, whom you may know to not have a tail. It's a lampshade on the fact that in the standard Pokémon [=RPGs=], Primeape can learn Iron Tail from its pre-evolution, Mankey, who ''does'' have a tail. When Pikachu questions how he can know it, he basically says that he's just that good.
** There's a Tyranitar that mocks the game's premise in the Granite zone.

* MythologyGag: Meowth, having a quiz game, obviously gets to say "That's right!"[[note]]his catchphrase from [[Anime/{{Pokemon}} the anime.]][[/note]] A bit of Brooklyn accent also seeps out of his dialogue at times.
** Hey, doesn't the Pelipper and the bulletin board next to it, along with the Corphish going "hey hey!", remind you of [[VideoGame/PokemonMysteryDungeon some other Pokémon spinoff?]]

* YouHaveFailedMe: Played with in ''Wonders Beyond''. While Darkrai's minions get bellowed this a fair few times, it doesn't seem to go past an idle scolding. Those who try to [[TheStarscream turn against]] his [[TheDragon Dragons]], however, are [[CurbstompBattle handled less generously]].

* FragileSpeedster: Snivy is not very strong, but is very fast and has a higher jump than other characters. This makes her ideal for noncombat games like Chase or Hide and Seek, as well as general exploration.

* InSeriesNickname: Pikachu is nicknamed Lightning Strike by the Pokémon in the Lava Zone.
** Pikachu and the Unova starters are referred to by a variety of nicknames in ''Wonders Beyond''. Which nickname is used is dependent on the player's actions.
