** [[VideoGame/SuperMario64 This isn't the first time]] [[VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy Bowser has taken over Peach's Castle]] [[VideoGame/PaperMario and kept her hostage inside there at the highest point.]] [[VideoGame/MarioAndLuigiBowsersInsideStory This is also not the first time that the castle hasn't been taken over by a villain and]] [[EvilMakeover it being remade in the villain's own image,]] still with the Peach kidnapping.
** So, how about that dark magic Bowser's been said to have that some of the fanbase (and spinoff game titles) like to pretend doesn't exist? In [[VideoGame/SuperMarioBros Mario's first adventure]], Bowser was said to use it to transform the land. Here, we finally see him using it progressively to transform Peach's castle into something he prefers. Well, now we know where he gets all the fire and lava!

** This game is also the first since [[VideoGame/SuperMarioBros3 Super Mario Bros. 3]] to have Boom-Boom and the Koopalings in the same game. Boom-Boom and the Koopalings are even the Fortress boss and the Castle bosses, respectively.

** One underwater level has currents over bottomless pits that will suck you in and cost you a life if you get pulled under. ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros'' had this for its underwater levels as well, though without any visual cues.

* DangerouslyGenreSavvy: Wendy O. Koopa uses ice skates so she's not subject to the ice physics of her airship, and Iggy uses Warp Pipes in his battle to evade Mario. Lemmy now throws bombs at you instead of summoning harmless bouncy balls.
