Triggerheart Exelica is a vertically-scrolling shooter by the small video game development team of Warashi. It was first released to arcades in Japan on the Creator/Sega NAOMI hardware in 2006. The game's storyline is set in the future where the interplanetary defense organization of Tilde have created Artificial Humans known as "Triggerhearts" to hold back the forces of the militant Ver'mith. Unfortunately, two Triggerheart sisters -- the energetic Exelica and the HotBlooded Crueltear -- fell through one of the Ver'mith's emergency escape wormholes during battle, which leads straight to PresentDay Earth. Cut off from everyone and everything they ever knew, the two Triggerhearts begin to lose hope and question their purpose for living. It was then that they decided to try and live a normal life... That is, until the day that a massive wormhole appears over Earth, signalling the start of a full-scale Ver'mith invasion, led by none other than another Triggerheart: one that Crueltear recognizes as Faintear.

* GameplayAndStorySegregation: Averted. The Triggerhearts are varied by their speed. It's explained in plot that Exelica can adapt with peaceful life on Earth too well, so she rarely did the routine maintenance for her equipments. Crueltear, however, felt herself is without purpose on this peaceful planet and thus kept her equipment in as good condition as possible. So when Ver'mith attacks Earth, Exelica's equipment are nowhere near their full potential. In Trigger Heart Exelica -Enhanced-, Faintear had just recently escaped from Ver'mith, and despite losing her original weapon units, has equipment in perfect condition. These are reflected in gameplay, with Exelica being slowest, Faintear being fastest and Crueltear in the middle.

Another unique feature of the game is the DynamicDifficulty of its boss battles; The bosses in Triggerheart Exelica uses a Variable Boss Attack System (or V.B.A.S. for short) to determine how hard they are willing to fight. Generally speaking, the more Medals you rack up, the harder they will fight back.

TriggerheartExelica is a shoot 'em up where the player controls either Triggerheart Exelica or Crueltear and can have them either shoot their enemies old-school-style, or use an ability called the "Anchor Shot" -- that is, firing a huge grappling hook at an enemy -- be it a small Mooks mook or a ship the size of a 747 -- and toss it around, deflecting bullets like a shield or hurling it right back at your enemy.

Also, the bosses use the VBAS (Variable Boss Attack System): how hard a boss is depends on how high a score you have, how many medals you collected, how many bombs/lives in stock, etc. Generally speaking, the more you have, the harder the boss gets.

Released in arcades in 2006, was the penultimate SegaDreamcast game in 2007hottip:*:Karous being the final one. (yes, really), and became part of XboxLiveArcade in February 2008. An UpdatedRerelease for the PS2 named Triggerheart Exelica -enhanced- has also been released, complete with a new selectable character () and a shiny new AnimeThemeSong opening.

Do you like shooting games? And do you like Fanservice boobies? Then you'll love the combination of the two, also known as Triggerheart Exelica.

In the future, the interplanetary defence organization "Tilde" creates artificial humans called "Triggerhearts" to hold back the forces of the militant Ver'mith. Unfortunately, two sister Triggerhearts- GenkiGirl Exelica and the HotBlooded Crueltear- fall through one of the Ver'mith's emergency escape wormholes, which leads straight to PresentDay Earth. Cut off from everyone and everything they knew, the two Triggerhearts begin to lose hope and question their purpose for living... that is, until the day that a massive wormhole appears over Earth, signalling the start of a full-scale Ver'mith invasion led by none other than another Triggerheart: one that Crueltear recognises as Faintear.
