Nintendo's 30th anniversary celebration of the ''Franchise/SuperMarioBros'' franchise[[note]]That is, ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros1'', not ''VideoGame/DonkeyKong''[[/note]] is their official alternative to ''[[Franchise/SuperMarioBros Mario]]'' {{ROM Hack}}s. '''''Super Mario Maker''''' is a GameMaker engine for Wii U based around 2D ''Mario'' platformers, specifically ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros1''. Level makers are provided an assortment of enemies, power-ups, and obstacles to make levels with, using an interface very reminiscent of ''VideoGame/MarioPaint''.

Additionally, users can decide to shift between various graphic styles, including the classic 8-bit style from the first ''Super Mario Bros.'' and ''VideoGame/SuperMarioBros3'', the 16-bit graphics of ''VideoGame/SuperMarioWorld'', or the 3D vectors from ''VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBrosU'', with other graphical styles confirmed to be in development. The physics are always the same (''[=SMB1=]'' with some modifications dependent on level style) regardless of graphics. Needless to say, [[SturgeonsLaw quality]] [[PlatformHell of the courses made]] [[NintendoHard in this may vary.]]

----
!! This game contains the following tropes:

* AbnormalAmmo: Bill Blasters can be made to fire anything from enemies to coins.
* AscendedGlitch: The Luigi Mushroom power up. It was originally a glitch the dev team found when they were making the game that made Mario skinny, but they found it so entertaining they decided to make it an official power-up in the game. Using it makes Mario big, thin, and changes his physics to that of Luigi.
* AsteroidsMonster: The giant Goombas that split into smaller Goombas from ''VideoGame/NewSuperMarioBrosWii'' are back.
* AirborneMook: ''Everyone'', once you apply wings to the enemies.
* BlackBeadEyes: {{Averted|Trope}} with the [[{{Retraux}} SMB1 versions]] of Wiggler and Bowser Jr., who usually don't have sclera.
* BulletHell: Due to the game's high enemy cap, it's entirely possible to stack Hammer Brothers on top of each other and create projectile hell. The same can be said for other enemies, such as Spinies, who can shoot spikes in this game.
* TheBusCameBack: Kuribo's Shoe finally makes its return after its last and previously only appearance in ''Super Mario Bros. 3''.
* {{Cap}}: It's currently unknown how many sprites can occupy the screen at once (the original earlier games would fail to generate a sprite if too many were on the screen already), but custom levels have shown 40+ goombas at once and 10+ hammer brothers once without issues.
* CombinatorialExplosion: A lot of the fun advertised in the trailer revolves around putting things together that don't go together in the normal games, and the game having updated physics/rules to deal with it. Any enemy can have wings applied to it, anything can bounce on springboards, and different objects can be in previews stacked upon one another in unorthodox permutations.
* EasterEgg:
** The Luigi Mushroom appears infrequently.
** During editing, a fly from the Coffee Break minigame in ''MarioPaint'' can appear. It can be swatted with the stylus, and the player is applauded for it.
* FakeDifficulty: Given SturgeonsLaw, this is bound to happen with some user created levels, especially since people can share levels to other players.
* GameMaker: Designed to be this for 2D ''Mario'' platformers, as the game is confirmed to be [[http://nintendoeverything.com/mario-maker-getting-more-graphical-styles-tezuka-wants-non-mario-graphics-composition-feature-confirmed/ getting more graphical styles and objects from other games in the series]].
* HelpfulMook: One can make enemies like Bill Blasters fire coins instead of enemies.
* JumpPhysics: The first trailer showed the physics engine from the original game (albeit with tweaks), even if you select sprites from ''Mario 3'' and ''World'', but later trailers have shown wall-jumping when in New Super Mario Bros mode, so it's currently unknown just how much the physics change based on which graphics are chosen.
* KaizoTrap: It wouldn't be a ''Mario'' level editor without them. The trailer gets in on the fun by encasing the castle at the end of a level in blocks so that Mario can't enter the castle after he slides down the flag pole.
* LevelGoal: The usual flag pole is present, though the second trailer shows that the Roulette Box from ''Super Mario Bros. 3'' returns as well. The NWC 2015 showed that the goal from ''Mario World'' returns, too. There's no word on whether the mechanics behind each are retained or not, however.
* PaletteSwap: It is possible to change graphical styles from ''Super Mario Bros''., ''Super Mario Bros. 3'', ''Super Mario World'', and ''New Super Mario Bros U.'', however, all styles use slightly modified ''Super Mario Bros.'' physics (for example the original didn't have a GoombaSpringboard feature, nor did they have wall jumping or ground pounding). More graphical styles have been confirmed to be in the making, some of which might not even be from the Mario series at all.
* PlatformHell: It's a game maker based on 2D Mario games. Going off of most {{ROM Hack}}s alone, it's inevitable stages like this will pop up a lot, especially given the level of chaos the editor allows.
* PoisonMushroom: It's possible to rig ? blocks so they release enemies instead of power-ups.
* PowerupMount: Yoshi is confirmed for this game.
* {{Retraux}}: Assets that didn't debut in -- or otherwise absent from -- certain games have new sprites to fit within the appropriate graphical styles, allowing things such as Thwomps in ''Super Mario Bros.'', Wigglers in ''Super Mario Bros. 3'', and Hammer Bros in ''Super Mario World'' to be possible.
* SpiritualSuccessor: To ''VideoGame/MarioPaint'' on the [=SNES=].
* SpringsSpringsEverywhere: Anything placed on top of trampolines will bounce off of it, including other trampolines.
* VideoGameFlight: The Raccoon Leaf from ''Super Mario Bros. 3'' and the Cape from ''Super Mario World'' are available as power-ups.
