Since the game was aimed at a global audience including Europeans, he felt there were too much stone-built castles and towns for them and needed to throw in some additional things that would be more exotic - so he added the Greco-Roman elements.

*** The story of the Greek god Asklepios is retold as the story of St. March Rosa who advanced the science of medicine to the point of resurrecting the dead using Medusa's blood and was eventually executed by the gods with a thunderbolt.
*** Though she's not named as Gaia, the art and associated fluff for "The Goddess of Fertility" tells of an ancient, constantly pregnant goddess who gave birth to younger gods, giants and monstrous beings such as the Cyclops.

Added DiffLines:

** There are also references to myths and folklore outside of the classical Greek and Roman. One art piece and fluff is "The slayer of 40 thieves" where a beautiful servant kills 40 thieves by filling the pots they were hiding in with oil and igniting it. For her deed, her master rewards her with marriage to his son. This is clearly a nod to ''Ali Baba and the 40 thieves''.
