* Ed Sanders (of Music/TheFugs) wrote the first serious book about Manson, 1971's ''The Family''. He's remained fascinated by the case and in 2015 published ''Sharon Tate: A Life'', which still deals quite heavily with Manson and his followers. While basically non-fiction, Sanders has an idiosyncratic style influenced by his lengthy career as a poet.

In 1968, Charles Manson, a man who had spent half his life to date in prison and lived in a hippie commune, befriended Music/DennisWilson and listened to Music/TheBeatles' ''Music/TheWhiteAlbum''. He [[EveryoneIsJesusInPurgatory heard hidden messages]] on the album (or claimed to, at any rate) about a race war that would break out the following year, and got along with his mates, from then on known as the "Manson Family", to provoke said war - by committing several brutal murders (including Creator/RomanPolanski's pregnant wife, Sharon Tate), and leaving the message "Helter Skelter" (the name of a song on ''The White Album'') [[CouldntFindAPen written in blood]] on the walls. He was arrested in December 1969, and three years later his death penalty was commuted to a life sentence. He has remained in prison since then (largely in solitary confinement, for his own safety) and is today perhaps the most internationally famous criminal in custody.

* The track "Never Learn To Love" on Music/TheBeachBoys' album ''Music/TwentyTwenty'' (1969) was written by Manson under the title "Cease to Exist", but released before his arrest. If the album would have been released after the brutal murders it would definitely have been omitted from the album.

* In addition to songs written about Manson, Manson [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Manson_discography wrote his own music]], and even got an album published by producer Phil Kaufman called ''Lie: The Love and Terror Cult''. Before the murders, he was for a time a hanger-on of Dennis Wilson, as a result of which Music/TheBeachBoys recorded one of his songs (with slightly altered lyrics) as the B-side "Never Learn Not To Love". Later on, Music/GunsNRoses recorded one of his songs, "Look at Your Game, Girl", as a hidden track on their CoverAlbum ''"The Spaghetti Incident?"'', to {{Troll}}. Not surprisingly, people were pissed, and Axl removed it from later releases because [[InsaneTrollLogic the public had misunderstood what he was going for and no longer deserved to hear it]].
