* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Before production of the film started, the first draft of the script was alot more comedic and silly, similar to the books the film was based on, but when Pierre Perifel was hired as director, it was toned down a bit to get the message of the film through little bit better.
** Early concept art shows Mr. Wolf would've been more scruffy like in the books.
** Early concept art reveals that the gang would've originally worn black suit-and-tie attire, like in the books. It also shows that Mr. Shark was the last one to lose this.
** Early concept art has Ms. Tarantula as dark grey with orange clothing. In the movie, she's orange with black clothing. Her design went through the most iterations compared to the rest of the gang, and at one point, she was less anthropomorphic than her book counterpart.
** While the majority of Diane's concept art depicts her as a fox, some development sketches show a human version of her.
** Early concept art reveals that Mr. Snake's Creator/HunterSThompson-inspired traits were meant to be pushed to the fullest point, sporting aviator shades and a cigarette holder, both of which were removed from his final design.
** Early in character design development, Mr. Shark and Mr. Piranha still had fins instead of legs, as in the books; Blabey suggested that Mr. Shark wiggle on the floor to move like a giant worm, and that Mr. Piranha parkour off objects. The animators redesigned them to have legs and sold Blabey on the concept.
** Briefly when planning the film's setting, the world was meant to be fully populated by anthropomorphic animals, just like the books. In the final film, the setting is a fictionalized Los Angeles and the only anthropomorphic animals are the major characters. Pierre Perifel stated that the change from a world of anthropomorphic animals to a world of both humans and anthropomorphic animals was made because he wanted to show the prejudice and stereotyping came from how humans have seen and treated these animals rather than how fellow animals see them.
** The diner scene at the beginning originally involved Mr. Wolf and Mr. Snake discussing what their last meals on Earth would be. It felt too adult for the movie's audience, so screenwriter Etan Cohen came up with the concept of discussing Snake's birthday instead, leading to a similar conversation in the final scene but lighter in tone.
** The crater was originally heart-shaped like the meteorite, and it had been converted into "Love Crater Memorial Park", with roads leading into it and a small, heart-shaped lake in the center. In the final film, the crater is round and the memorial park is built along the edge overlooking it, setting the scene of the charity gala.
** In the scene where Mr. Wolf and Diane are captured by Marmalade, the two would've commented on how ridiculous Marmalade's plan is; if he wanted to steal a billion dollars from his own charity, all he'd need to do is hire a really good accountant. While the scene was funny, it sucked the tension from the moment, and was ultimately cut.
** One of the disguises modeled for Mr. Shark is that of Cuddles, Marmalade's human assistant, suggesting he was meant to use this disguise to infiltrate the compound and rescue Wolf and Diane from the death trap. In the final film, they get in through underground pipes instead, and Mr. Piranha's fart knocks Cuddles out.
** According to storyboard artist Adam Rosette, Marmalade was going to reveal himself to be an alien (just like in the books), but, when the film's humorous tone was turned down a bit, the producers thought that the alien reveal would be too weird and out there for the audience to accept. So, they decided to foreshadow it with the meteorite and the butt-shape of it as a hint at his true identity and save the reveal in a potential sequel.
** The home release of the film includes several deleted scenes as extras:
*** The film had an alternate opening sequence that began with Mr. Wolf robbing a bank, with Mr. Snake, Ms. Tarantula, and Mr. Piranha hiding within Wolf's suit. After robbing the vault, the bank is swarmed by police, but Wolf is escorted out by Mr. Shark, who's disguised as an FBI agent. They then throw away their chance at a clean getaway just to instigate a car chase.
*** After the botched Sunnyside heist, Mr. Snake reaches his breaking point and attempts to eat Marmalade... while he's having dinner with Diane. While the gang stops him, Diane stops eating and decides to call Chief Luggins.
*** One scene involved Marmalade getting a tour of the "extra secret base" where the meteorite is being held, and trying to convince the soldiers to tell him which vault the meteorite is being held in. Notably, Cuddles speaks.
*** A scene taking place at the charity gala would have the gang on a stage demonstrating to the public their good behavior.
*** A post-credits scene of the scientist at Sunnyside realizing his "dad" has disappeared.

* InspirationForTheWork:
** Director Pierre Perifel cited the art styles presented in various Japanese anime and manga for influencing the film's dynamic look. Anime/SherlockHound and Franchise/LupinIII (Anime/TheCastleOfCagliostro) were specifically mentioned due to Creator/HayaoMiyazaki's contributions to them. Other works include Anime/FLCL, Anime/CowboyBebop, and Franchise/DragonBall. He rationalized that this was due to his upbringing being around the time of the anime boom in France.
** Being a French native, Perifel cited European art influences as being equally important for the film. French cartoonist Benjamin Renne's work on WesternAnimation/TheBigBadFoxAndOtherTales and WesternAnimation/ErnestEtCelestine are noted as prime examples.
** Considering Bad Guys is a heist film, Perifel naturally mentioned Film/OceansEleven, Film/ReservoirDogs, and Film/PulpFiction as influences. The opening Oner in the diner especially pays homage to Pulp Fiction.
* LateExportForYou: Its Japan theatrical release date is October 7, 2022, nearly four months after the film was released on Blu-ray in North America.
* NovelizationFirst: The novel based on the film was released nearly two months before the film itself. Because the novel comes from an earlier draft of the film, some dialog and scenes are slightly different from the film. Notably, the Love Crater Meteorite is described as glowing pink, which was before the film's color coding was finalized and the glow was changed to blue.
* NewbieBoom: The [=DreamWorks=] movie trailer brought more attention to the book series, and in fact many were unaware that it was a book series to start with.
* PlayingAgainstType: In the Japanese dub, and while not the first time he had voiced villains, this is one of the few times we hear Creator/KappeiYamaguchi, as Professor Marmalade, to voice the BigBad of the story, rather than the hero or at least one of the main villain's goons.

* ReleaseDateChange:
** The movie was slated for September 17, 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was eventually moved to April 15, 2022. It was then moved a week later, leaving April 22, 2022 as its final date.
** Just before its planned release date of March 24, 2022 in that country, Universal Pictures joined an economic boycott of Russia, leading to the releases of all Universal films, including The Bad Guys, being delayed indefinitely there.
* ShortRunInPeru: The film was released in much of the world, including Israel and the Dominican Republic, on March 16, 2022. Australia got the film later on March 31 in the same year. The UK/Ireland officially got a release in April 1, though some theatres got an earlier release in March 26.
