Odo doesn't have a problem mimicking hair. He can turn into animals. It's slicked back like that in imitation of his mentor.

* ThrowItIn: Creator/ReneAuberjonois had the idea on the spot to have a bit of Odo's hair come loose during his breakdown. Never mind that this doesn't make much sense given it's just a simulation of hair whose tightness is due to his difficulty in replicating it.

* CreatorBacklash: While considering it far from being one of the worst episodes of the show, executive producer Ira Steven Behr later admitted that they had really messed up Shakaar's characterization in this episode, turning him from a hard-nosed resistance fighter into someone almost impossibly perfect. What's more, actor Duncan Regehr's other work commitments meant they weren't able to bring him back to repair the damage -- outside of one appearance in the following season's "[[Recap/StarTrekDeepSpaceNineS05E12TheBegotten The Begotten]]", where he basically acted as a sitcom boyfriend to Kira -- eventually forcing them to ditch the character.

* ActorInspiredElement: The image of Odo sitting with his "hair" mussed up was inspired by a painting Rene Auberjonois saw of a defeated samurai in the rain.
