** In its developmental stage as "Mysteries Five", there were originally five kids who, in a knockoff of ''The Archie Show'', played rock music as well as solved mysteries. Their names were Geoff, Mike, Kelly, Linda, and W.W. (as well as their bongo-playing sheepdog, Too Much). Geoff and Mike were melded to become Fred (originally Ronnie but renamed after CBS programming head Fred Silverman), Kelly became Daphne, Linda became Velma and W.W. became Shaggy.

** However, Linda's last name was ''Blake'', and an old sketch shows one of the girls holding hands with a child who looks ''nothing'' like Shaggy. Another source claims that Mike Andrews was Shaggy's original name. Either way, the original plot stated that there would be ''five'' humans and a dog, which throws the above story into some e

** For {{Creator/CBS}} and {{Creator/ABC}}: ''Where Are You?'' originally aired alongside two other new Hanna-Barbera series, ''WesternAnimation/DastardlyAndMuttleyInTheirFlyingMachines'' and ''WesternAnimation/ThePerilsOfPenelopePitstop'' in the fall of 1969. By 1970, ''Where Are You?'' proved to be such a ratings success for CBS that it was the only one of the three to be renewed for a second (admittedly smaller because of a time crunch) season. The 1971 reruns continued to excel with audiences, forcing the network to ask for [[WesternAnimation/TheNewScoobyDooMovies a brand-new Scooby-based series]]. When ''The New Movies'' finally ended, CBS was content to keep the reruns going without producing more episodes, but executives at ABC were reportedly excited to take the franchise off CBS's hands if it meant producing more content to attract ''Scooby'''s audience. By 1976, the series made the ChannelHop, and was at home with ABC for the next fifteen years.

!!The 2002 live-action film:

* AwesomeDearBoy:
** According to the DVDCommentary, several of the music acts, including Shaggy ([[NamesTheSame the reggae singer, not the character]]) and Music/OutKast agreed to appear on the soundtrack because the name "Scooby Doo" was fun to sing.
** Inverted with Creator/TimCurry, a lifelong ''Scooby-Doo'' fan who turned down the role of Mondavarious once he learned that Scrappy-Doo was in the film, because he hated that character.
* {{Blooper}}: Scooby pronounced hydrochronic as "hy-dro-ca-ro-nik" while Shaggy pronounced it as "hy-dro-clo-nik", making the latter say hydrocolonic.
* CastTheRunnerUp: Creator/IslaFisher was considered for Daphne. She would eventually go on to portray Mary Jane in the film.
* CreatorBacklash:
** As shown above, Creator/JamesGunn later on apologized for making Scrappy the villain of the film, especially upon realizing there were ''actual'' fans of the character.
** Most of the cast have disowned the film and hate it. Creator/FreddiePrinzeJr had low opinions on the wardrobe of Fred, specifically the ascot. Creator/SarahMichelleGellar was once asked in an interview which of her films she would forbid her children from watching, ''Film/IKnowWhatYouDidLastSummer'' or ''Film/CruelIntentions'', and [[TakeAThirdOption she chose this film]]. Creator/LindaCardellini was also dissatisfied with the final cut, finding it too raunchy for a children's film. The lone exception is Creator/MatthewLillard, who initially hated the film but eventually warmed up to it, as his performance as Shaggy was [[TookTheBadFilmSeriously consistently praised]] even amongst the critics who hated the rest of the film. In fact, it led to him being able to voice Shaggy in future animated ''Scooby-Doo'' productions.
* CreatorsPest: Creator/JamesGunn [[https://www.huffingtonpost.com.au/2017/05/03/the-director-of-guardians-of-the-galaxy-really-hates-this-sco_a_22064565/ shares the fandom's hatred of Scrappy]]. He did apologise when he learned that some children were upset at Scrappy being the villain.
-->There is a Scrappy, because he exists in the cartoon, so we have to acknowledge him. I hate Scrappy's guts. We all hate Scrappy's guts. Our whole goal was to destroy Scrappy forever.
* TheDanza: Creator/FreddiePrinzeJr plays Fred.
* DeletedScene:
** An alternate opening that began showing the animated counterparts dancing around to the theme song. The Luna Ghost would then kidnap Daphne and the sequence would shift to live-action.
** Flashbacks when Fred, Velma and Daphne meet up at the airport. Fred would be shown giving a speech on his book tour to an uninterested audience. Velma would be at a support group, confess that she was a member of Mystery Inc and no one in the group would remember her. Daphne would be shown karate training but accidentally get herself stuck in a tree.
** Velma, Fred and Daphne on a tour bus going around Spooky Island. This is where she'd meet her love interest, and he says "you've always been a chick?"
** A really random sequence in Dead Mike's bar where Velma would get up on stage and start singing "Too Good To Be True" to mock Fred and Daphne. As she does this Mondevarious says "she does know that Bloody Skulls are non-alcoholic?" [[spoiler: [[AlternateCharacterInterpretation Although,]] [[HiddenVillain given the true]] [[RidiculouslyHumanRobot nature]] [[LatexPerfection of Mondavarious]], [[{{Troll}} he could have been just trying to embarrass Velma by getting onlookers to think she acts this way when she]] ''[[{{Troll}} isn't]]'' [[{{Troll}} drunk.]]]]
** Daphne encountering a possessed Velma in the girls' locker room, having a similar encounter to Shaggy and Scooby with the possessed Fred. Velma would be acting like a ValleyGirl before turning on the GameFace. This is included in the novelization.
** Shaggy witnesses Daphne's soul getting extracted and a demon possessing her - explaining why he knows to look for her head in the vat as well. This is also in the novelization.
** A kiss was filmed between Daphne and Velma. During the scene where the souls keep swapping into the wrong body, Daphne and Velma's would keep getting in the wrong ones - so they decide to kiss to make sure they go in properly.
** While Scooby is locked up in the cage, he fakes a heart attack to try and escape. The guard points out that he's done it eight times already.
* DVDCommentary: One by Charles Roven and Richard Suckle and one by Creator/SarahMichelleGellar, Creator/LindaCardellini, Creator/FreddiePrinzeJr and Creator/MatthewLillard.
* DyeingForYourArt:
** Creator/FreddiePrinzeJr bleached his brown hair blond, and had to shave his head after the dye ruined it.
** Creator/IslaFisher is a redhead and became blonde so audiences wouldn't confuse her for Daphne.
** Averted with Creator/SarahMichelleGellar though, who just wore a red wig, as she was still filming Season 6 of ''Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer''.
* ExecutiveVeto: Creator/JamesGunn said he wanted Velma to be a lesbian and for her to kiss Daphne but ExecutiveMeddling insisted the movie be more child friendly.
* FakeAmerican:
** The Scottish-born Australian Creator/IslaFisher plays the American Mary Jane.
** Brisbane-born Neil Fanning as Scooby-Doo.
* GayPanic: Creator/JamesGunn revealed on Website/{{Twitter}} that he had wanted to make Velma a lesbian, but that the studio had vetoed that -- forcing him to make her AmbiguouslyGay, then not giving her a love interest at all, and then giving her a boyfriend in the sequel.
* MemeAcknowledgment: When asked about the Shaggy cast interview caption memes, Creator/MatthewLillard merely stated "This is wrong." and "Who the hell... stop this nonsense.". Though given that he then links to [[Website/{{Reddit}} r/BadassShaggy]] and found it hilarious, it would seem that he liked the interview memes.
* MissingTrailerScene:
** For the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKqZ1Sv4aX0 teaser trailer]], it was made to look like a Batman sneak peak until you see Scooby's shadow with him saying, "Who? Me? Nah-uh!"
** Velma, while drunk thought that Scooby-Doo means "Scooby-Poop".
** Fred asks Scooby/[[spoiler:actually Scrappy]] "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYUCohuCPcs Did somebody spike your dog bowl?]]"
* OldShame:
** Creator/FreddiePrinzeJr (Fred) and Creator/SarahMichelleGellar (Daphne) don't think very fondly about the live action film. Among other things, Prinze hated wearing the trademark ascot, and Gellar hated wearing Daphne's trademark Go-go boots. She was once asked which of her movies she wouldn't let her children watch, ''Film/IKnowWhatYouDidLastSummer'' or ''Film/CruelIntentions''. [[TakeAThirdOption She picked this one]].
** Creator/LindaCardellini (Velma) states that she felt that the final cut of the film could've been adjusted a bit more.
** Originally PlayedStraight but later {{averted}} with Creator/MatthewLillard. Originally he stated that he regretted working on the live action films as it seemed to ruin his movie career, but once he became the full time voice of Shaggy in the cartoons following Creator/CaseyKasem's retirement he's since changed his mind, and now thanks the movies for leading into a consistent role for him to play. Though nowadays, Freddie has embraced having played in ''Scooby-Doo'' and pokes fun at it sometimes.
** Downplayed with Creator/JamesGunn, who, to this day is pretty satisfied with [[spoiler: having Scrappy be evil]], though he was fairly chastened after encountering child fans distraught over it.
-->'''James Gunn:''' ''(Pre Release)'' It’s the parents we have to appease. The kids don’t care.
-->'''James Gunn:''' ''(Post Release)'' Something I really didn't understand was Scrappy's popularity with five and six year olds.
* OrphanedReference:
** Right before she's kidnapped by the villains, Daphne is seen running out of a building and slamming the door shut. This is because of a cut scene that took place inside the girls' locker room - where Daphne encountered a possessed Velma and several other girls. They're who she was running from.
** Shaggy knows to look for Daphne's soul in the pit after he's found Fred and Velma's. The reason is that he would originally stumble into a scene Daphne's soul being extracted from her body and a monster inhabiting it. This scene too was deleted.
** Old Man Smithers/The Luna Ghost was originally meant to be the main villain of the movie. In the finished product, he only appears in the film's prologue, but the Luna Ghost was still featured prominently on the movie poster.
* PosthumousCredit: William Hanna, one of the executive producers for the film, died of throat cancer a year before the film's release.
* ProductionPosse: Composer David Newman and editor Kent Beyda previously worked together on the live-action ''Flintstones'' films. So did executive producers William Hanna and Joseph Barbera.
* PromotedFanboy:
** Creator/JamesGunn was more than happy to write an adaptation of his favorite cartoon. Although this does bother some fans due to his not playing the material straight, that is a reminder there are more than one way to be a fan.
** Creator/LindaCardellini happily notes to have watched Scooby-Doo for many years even as she went away to college.
** Creator/IslaFisher is also a Scooby-Doo fan and looked forward to her first Hollywood role.
* RealLifeRelative: In the Latin Spanish dub:
** Creator/ArturoMercado voiced Scrappy-Doo and his son Creator/ArturoMercadoJr voiced Shaggy.
** Daphne and Velma are voiced by real life sisters Xóchitl and Gaby Ugarte, respectively.
* RealLifeWritesTheHairstyle: Creator/SarahMichelleGellar had to wear a red wig as Daphne, as she was still filming season six of ''Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer''.
* RealitySubtext:
** Mondavarious' park is stated in the movie to be ten years old. At the time of the movie's release (2002), so was Creator/CartoonNetwork.
** Likewise, at the end, he mentions that [[spoiler:Scrappy]] kidnapped him during an evil elf auditions two years earlier. Casting for this movie would have begun in 2000.
* RoleReprise:
** In the Latin American Spanish dub, Creator/ArturoMercado once again reprised his role as Scrappy-Doo.
** In the Brazilian Portuguese dub, Creator/OrlandoDrummond and Mário Monjardim reprised their roles of Scooby and Shaggy, respectively, which they'd been playing since the first series (Monjardim stopped voicing him for a brief period in the 80's and Drummond voiced Scooby non-stop for ''40 years!'').
* RomanceOnTheSet: Fred and Daphne are played by husband and wife Creator/FreddiePrinzeJr and Creator/SarahMichelleGellar.
* SavedFromDevelopmentHell: The film had been in DevelopmentHell as far back as the 1990s, with Creator/JimCarrey as Shaggy Rogers and [[Series/{{Roseanne}} Sara Gilbert]] as Velma Dinkley. Creator/KevinSmith was also attached to direct the movie at one point as well (Mystery Inc.'s cameo in ''Film/JayAndSilentBobStrikeBack'' suddenly makes a lot more sense).
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Creator/MikeMyers was approached to portray Shaggy Rogers before the casting of Creator/MatthewLillard.
** Creator/JenniferAniston and Creator/JenniferLoveHewitt were considered for the part of Daphne Blake before Creator/SarahMichelleGellar was cast.
** Creator/CarlaGugino, Creator/AlyssaMilano and Creator/ChristinaRicci were considered for Velma Dinkley before the casting of Creator/LindaCardellini.
** Creator/TimCurry was the first choice to portray Mondavarious before Creator/RowanAtkinson was cast, but turned it down when he heard that Scrappy-Doo was going to be in the film -- as he has always ''despised'' the character.
** Creator/AnthonyAnderson was considered to play the Voodoo Maestro but had schedule conflicts with ''Film/KangarooJack''.
** Music/{{Weezer}} was asked to make appearances as actors, but rejected the offer.
** The original script was more faithful to the series and acted as a prequel story, explaining how the gang came together; with the gang being in a college that had a newly instated 'No Dogs Allowed' rule that brought in a sadistic dogcatcher, forcing Shaggy to hide Scooby. Daphne would have been an aspiring reporter for the school's newspaper who was danger prone as she was in the series and is invited to attend and write about a part at the old Kingston Mansion (from the classic series episode "What The Hex Going On?") on campus grounds but her roommate Velma comes with her due to a power outage and would meet Shaggy and Scooby, who were delivering pizzas, at the party. The party would have been broken up by the ghost that was rumored to haunt the place, but a series of events leads Scooby to knocking the ghost down and Velma unmasks him to be none other than Fred, who was doing it as a House Initiation Dare. The now five members of the gang would have been left in the mansion where the plot would take off and be attacked by the Ghost of Elias Kingston and they'd stumble into the film's mystery. There was also going to be a more serious romance arc between Daphne and Fred, who initially dislike each other but come to care deeply for one another, especially when Daphne discovered Fred is homeless and lives in what becomes the Mystery Machine. Other characters from the show such as Mr. Wickles ("What a Night for a Knight") and Old Hank ("Mine Your Own Business") would have appeared along with other Creator/HannaBarbera properties making cameos, such as WesternAnimation/JosieAndThePussycats appearing as a band at the party, an inanimate WesternAnimation/{{Speedbuggy}} in a parking lot, ''WesternAnimation/TheJetsons'' playing on TV, and William Hanna and Joseph Barbera themselves were also intended to make cameos at the end as the presidents of the university, praising Mystery Inc for saving the school. The original script and the final film don't have much in common, other than a darker and higher stakes story than the series with an end of the world scenario, a character arc with a love interest unintentionally coming between Shaggy and Scooby (though the original script had her as more of a goth/grunge girl who shared Shaggy's passion for food as opposed to the Mary Jane character in the final movie), and risque humor with jokes about the old rumors that Shaggy was a pothead, hinting Mr. Wickles was a transvestite, and Scooby would have called the dogcatcher an 'rasshole'. Ironically, it ended up having more in common with the later direct-to-DVD prequel film,”Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins” released 7 years later.
** Hadley Kay was going to voice Scooby, reprising his role from ''WesternAnimation/JohnnyBravo'', as shown [[https://youtu.be/VkQbwJsXj9E?t=780 here]], before he was replaced by Neil Fanning.
** Scrappy wasn't supposed to appear in the movie at all (not even being ditched by Scooby and the gang as part of the backstory), though Creator/JamesGunn's original draft does have the U.S. Coast Guard threaten to put Scooby to sleep, with Shaggy adding, "Like what happened to Scrappy." The main villain was instead supposed to be Old Man Smithers, the Luna Ghost from the beginning of the movie, living up to his vow of revenge, this is why the Luna Ghost's shadow is so prominent on the posters, home releases, and promo materials.
** A full-sized stand-in puppet of Scooby was built by Creator/JimHensonsCreatureShop for the film but it ultimately went unused and Scooby became a CG character instead.

** "Old Man Jenkins" has become the term for the stereotypical Scooby villain. Yes, that's right, ''Scooby-Doo'' is the Western equivalent of ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion''))

** Thankfully(!) averted via digital releases. Every iteration of ''Scooby-Doo'' has been distributed for digital download on various platforms, from the oft-rereleased first two seasons of ''Where Are You!'', to the more obscure years of ''Scooby Doo and Scrappy Doo'', to the final holdover episodes of ''A Pup Named Scooby-Doo''. As mentioned above, "Wednesday is Missing" remains the only episode unavailable outside of unauthorized Internet copies.

* AscendedFanon: It was a common joke that in the original series Daphne and Fred were somewhere having sex, though in the actual series there was really nothing to imply that any of the gang were anything but platonic. It wasn't until years later that Daphne and Fred became {{Implied Love Interest}}s, then eventually just a straight-up couple.

*** Welker did reprise his role as Scooby but not Fred for the 2020 animated film WesternAnimation/{{Scoob!}}, making it the first Scooby-Doo entry (besides the live action ''Scooby-Doo'' films and the 1980s animated series ''A Pup Named Scooby-Doo'') to have Fred voiced by a different voice actor that isn't Frank Welker.

** ''Where Are You'' originally aired alongside two other new Hanna-Barbera series, ''WesternAnimation/DastardlyAndMuttleyInTheirFlyingMachines'' and ''WesternAnimation/ThePerilsOfPenelopePitstop'' in the fall of 1969. By 1970, ''Where Are You'' proved to be such a ratings success for {{Creator/CBS}} that it was the only one of the three to be renewed for a second (admittedly smaller because of a time crunch) season. The 1971 reruns continued to excel with audiences, forcing the network to ask for [[WesternAnimation/TheNewScoobyDooMovies a brand-new Scooby-based series]].
** Some iteration of ''Scooby-Doo'' used to air on Creator/CartoonNetwork ''every'' day. In recent years the selection has been limited and now on the main channel it's mostly just an occasional movie. Despite this, {{Creator/Boomerang}} still airs ''Where Are You'' very frequently although with several breaks. Every week as of May 2020, either a [[WesternAnimation/TomAndJerryDirectToVideoFilmSeries Tom and Jerry movie]] or a Scooby Doo movie airs on Boomerang.
