** Early builds of the game handled aiming and targeting quite differently, using a lock-on system similar to VideoGame/PanzerDragoon. When Rockstar took over the project, aiming and targeting were changed to a more traditional ThirdPersonShooter system, though this unconventional method would live on as part of the "Dead Eye" gameplay mechanic.

** The game was initially co-developed by Capcom and was more-or-less designed to be a BeatEmUp with guns, as something of a SpiritualSuccessor to Capcom's NES title Gunsmoke. Capcom artist Akiman provided the character designs. The plot also had supernatural aspects, with Red being an undead gunslinger out to avenge his family. When Rockstar took over the project, The game and plot was quickly reworked to be more grounded.

* WhatCouldHaveBeen: This game was co-developed by Capcom and was more-or-less initially designed to be a BeatEmUp with guns. More specifically it was to be something of a SpiritualSuccessor to Capcom's NES title Gunsmoke. Some of these elements can be seen in the final version, particularly earliy in the game as entire levels are based around the three bounties Red has to hunt down, each with very distinctive design and weapon of choice, much like the orignal Gunsmoke. Capcom artist Akiman provided the character designs. Earlier builds had supernatural aspects and crazy weapons, but Capcom dropped it, and Rockstar revised it. Now that Rockstar is in complete control of the property, the sequel has become a WideOpenSandbox.

Shout Out is not a Trivia trope. Moving.

* ShoutOut: Being highly based upon TheWestern, in particular SpaghettiWesterns, the game has plenty of shoutouts to various cowboy films.
** Diego, while fighting you, will shout "Say hello to my little friend!"
** One fight in the Annie Stokes level plays out an awful lot like a game of SpaceInvaders.
** Supporting character 'Blind Willy Wilson' is mostlikely a nod to the blues singer Blind Willy [=McTell=]- TheWhiteStripes covered one of his songs.
** The duelling contest itself is almost a WholePlotReference to the Sam Raimi film Film/TheQuickAndTheDead. Red Harlow's name is a ShoutOut to the unrelated Louis L'Amour novel of the same name.
** Three duelling enemies in the Jailbreak level are named Sergio, Ennio and Eli
** Mr. Black's gatling-coffin is similar to the one used by Film/Django.
** General Diego's playable stage is reminiscent of the bridge from Film/TheGoodTheBadAndTheUgly.
