* DarkhorseCasting: Charlie Hunman, Rinko Kikuchi and Idris Elba are pushed into the top billing as the protagonists. Elba is already famous thanks to his role as the titular character in ''Series/{{Luther}}'' and Heimdal in the Film/MarvelCinematicUniverse while Kikuchi is only known for her Oscar-nominated role in Film/{{Babel}}. Unless one watches ''Series/SonsOfAnarchy'', mainstream audiences don't know who Charlie Hunman is. Asides from Elba, Creator/RonPerlman is another recognized name in the movie.

** This trope is the reason why ''Film/PacificRim'' only reached #3 in the US box office. As explained in [[http://www.businessinsider.com/why-pacific-rim-didnt-make-more-money-opening-weekend-2013-7 this article]], Warner Bros. apparently screwed up the marketing. Fortunately, thanks to word-of-mouth, a sequel is in works though it's now handled by Universal Studios.
** This happens in Japan as well. Despite that Creator/GuillermoDelToro visited the country with Creator/RinkoKikuchi and Mana Asado with the latter being more popular and well-known to the native Japanese than former, the movie debuted to #5 in the Japanese box office. It doesn't help that it's in competition with Hayao Miyazaki's [[Film/TheWindRises last movie]]. that [[Film/WorldWarZ Brad Pitt movie]] and Film/MonstersUniversity.

** That's not the only one, since [[Anime/MobileSuitGundam Amuro Ray and Char]] are Herc Hansen and Dr. Newton Geiszler respectively.

* BoxOfficeBomb: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted case.]] It did not do well domestically taking in [[http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=pacificrim.htm $101 million on a $190 million budget]], with every sign of it. However the overseas market unexpectedly pulled in $309 million with a huge $111 million return from China coming as a complete surprise. Including marketing and the less profitable ratios for overseas releases though means [[DoubleSubversion it still didn't become profitable in theaters]]. It was at least an AcclaimedFlop however and did enough business to [[http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Pacific-Rim-2-Sequel-Still-Happening-42160.html warrant a sequel]].
