* CompletelyDifferentTitle: In Germany, the film was released as ''Friday the 13th Part VIII: Deathtrap Manhattan''

* CreatorBacklash: Writer & director Rob Hedden has admitted that, while he still had fun making the movie, he isn’t too proud of how the film turned out and takes full responsibility for how the final film ended up becoming and not living up to the high fan expectations.

* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Before settling with the script used for the final film, there were at least ''three'' different treatments from some of the crew of ''Film/FridayThe13thPartVIITheNewBlood''. These script ideas included:
*** Tina being sent to a mental institution and Jason coming back to life and stalking her (by director John Carl Buechler)
*** Tina becoming a consultant for teens also suffering from the same telekinetic powers she has, which leads to Jason stalking them (by Tina’s actress Lar Park Lincoln & her husband)
*** And finally, [[WhatDoYouMeanItWasntMadeOnDrugs the weirdest one of all]], the events of Part VII were all a dream and and Nick kills Tina (by Nick’s actor Kevin Spirtas)
*** All ideas were rejected by associate producer Barbra Sachs before settling with this film.
** The original script called for the climactic battle to take place in [[MonumentalBattle the Statue of Liberty]].
** The producers originally wanted Ken Kirzinger to play Jason, as they didn't want to bother with the trouble of getting Creator/KaneHodder a Canadian work permit (most of the film was shot in Vancouver). However, director Rob Hedden dug his heels in and demanded that they bring Hodder back. Kirzinger therefore got the consolation prize of getting to play the chef who Jason throws into a mirror in NYC, and [[Film/FreddyVsJason a much bigger prize years later]].
** Tamara's death scene was originally supposed to be a homage to ''Film/{{Psycho}}'', with Jason repeatedly stabbing her in the shower with a piece of broken mirror. This was changed due after the film-makers became worried that the MPAA would force the scene to be deleted, with Jason instead shoving her into the mirror and then stabbing her off-screen.
*** Likewise she had several more scenes and was portrayed in a bit more sympathetic light with it being implied that her actions are a result of her father barely noticing her.
** Miles was supposed to have had a background as a champion high-diver, making his death a rather poetic one.
** Jason was supposed to [[http://www.fridaythe13thfranchise.com/2016/07/behind-scenes-jasons-original-sewage.html?m=1 dissolve and die after falling into the toxic waste]] rather than turn back into a little boy.
** Jason's memetic scene where he kicks the boombox while in New York was originally scripted to have him literally KickTheDog. Hodder refused and it was changed to the boombox.
** Creator/ElizabethBerkley and Dedee Pfeiffer auditioned for Rennie.

* FanNickname: The fact that so little of this movie is actually set and shot in Manhattan has led to wags calling it nicknames like "Jason Takes a Cruise", "Jason Takes Vancouver", and even "[[BreadEggsBreadedEggs Jason Takes a Cruise to Vancouver]]".

** Problems also cropped up on set. The actor originally cast to play the male lead Sean also had to be recast during production because, according to the producers, he came off as gay in the dailies and had no romantic chemistry with the female lead Rennie. Director Rob Hedden also unsuccessfully got Rennie's actress Jensen Daggett to do a nude scene; when that failed, he successfully got Sharlene Martin, who played the RichBitch Tamara, to do it. Unfortunately and quite humorously, his means of doing so was to completely strip down himself and get into the shower in order to show Martin how easy it was; furthermore, [[IsThisThingStillOn the cameras were rolling when this happened]], leaving the producers very confused when they went over the dailies the next day.

* CaliforniaDoubling: Most of the city scenes were actually filmed in UsefulNotes/{{Vancouver}}, Canada. The scene in Times Square was the only one shot on location in New York.

** Likewise, scenes at the Brooklyn Bridge, the Statue of Liberty, and Madison Square Garden were scripted, but never filmed for the same reason. The only recognizable New York site Jason appears at (and the only one shot on location) is Times Square, with most of the city scenes shot instead in budget-friendly Vancouver. Even then, failing to truly live up to its own big selling point is ''far'' from the only reason this film has its reputation for suffering a bad case of {{Sequelitis}}.
