Names The Same is no longer a trope

* NamesTheSame: Sort of. Both [[Literature/DoctorWhoNewAdventures the Seventh Doctor]] and the Eighth encounter a type 102 TARDIS in their run. The difference is that while Seven encounters what is a relatively typical, if highly advanced TARDIS unit, Eight accidentally ''causes'' the type 102 to emerge in the first place, in the form of companion Compassion.

* TroubledProduction: The books were initally edited by a woman who knew nothing about ''Series/DoctorWho''. The top writers on the Literature/DoctorWhoNewAdventures were recruited and then told they couldn't do the stuff that had worked before because BBC Books wanted the EDAs to be distinct from the Virgin line. And when one of their writers did come up with a truly original idea that could have established a direction for the line, the lack of actual discussion between the writers as to what to do with it meant he took his ball and went home when other authors went in a different direction. When Justin Richards took over as editor, pretty much all he could do was torch the franchise and start over, and even that didn't really work. Then, just as the line seemed like it was finally starting to come into its own, the BBC ordered it (and the Literature/PastDoctorAdventures) scrapped so as not to distract from the 2005 relaunch of the show. While fans were willing to put up with the faults of the books due to the comparative lack of any other ''Doctor Who'' related material in those years, they've since come to be seen (fairly or otherwise) as the poor relations of the Creator/BigFinish [[AudioPlay/BigFinishDoctorWho audio stories]].

* ActorAllusion: The Doctor is referred to as a "[[Film/WithnailAndI ponce]]" a couple times. Particularly notable in ''The Fall of Yquatine'', in which it seems to happen just for the sake of having him be called a ponce, possibly demonstrating the enduring popularity of ''Film/WithnailAndI'' amongst drunken humans throughout time and space.
--> The Doctor hurried through the marketplace, dodging people and beings, haring round corners, knocking over a pallet of fruit, stopping to apologise and then having to run away from the irate vendor, falling over a small child who burst out crying, standing on the toe of a very old and irate Draconian, getting called a ponce by a group of drunken humans, generally causing total chaos wherever he went, but getting absolutely nowhere in finding Compassion. (p. 30-31)
* CreatorsPest: According to Stephen Cole, ''none'' of the writers liked Sam Jones. So much that they were always trying to kill her off. (Or, in Kate Orman and Jonathan Blum's case, make her a fully rounded character.)

* DevelopmentGag: In ''Unnatural History'', Daniel Joyce is a Berkeley professor whose surname is a reference to Creator/JamesJoyce, writer of ''Literature/{{Ulysses}}''. Robert [=DeLaurentis'=] rejected script for a ''Who'' film has Ulysses, the Doctor's father, living on Earth as a Berkeley professor. ''Is'' Joyce the Doctor's father? Per Jonathan Blum, it's [[RiddleForTheAges deliberately open]] (which is fitting, given the book) - maybe he is, maybe he isn't, and hopefully he's an interesting character regardless of which one you go with.

* {{Jossed}}: Everything, as of ''[[DoctorWho50thPrequelTheNightOfTheDoctor The Night of the Doctor]]''. But that shouldn't stop you from loving them anyways.
** Alternately, ''Series/DoctorWho'' being the sort of series it is, you could consider them something less than altogether {{Jossed}}. ''[[Recap/BigFinishDoctorWho050Zagreus Zagreus]]'' suggests that the [=EDAs=] exist in an alternate universe to the one in which the Big Finish audios and ''The Night of the Doctor'' take place in. So it's all happening in the same multiverse. And ''[[Recap/BigFinishDoctorWho123TheCompanyOfFriends The Company of Friends: Mary's Story]]'' contains references to companions from multiple continuities, including Compassion.

* WhatCouldHaveBeen: The villains from the second major [[StoryArc arc]] of the series, Sabbath's allies, were originally meant to be the Daleks, reappearing after 52 books and 6 years absence. The Council of Eight was a last minute replacement, meaning some of the clues as to their identity ended being a bit misleading.

forgive my bitterness. it\'s hard to be enthusiastic when everybody\'s celebrating and you\'ve just been told your favorite characters aren\'t as real.
