* ReclusiveArtist: Rod Evans. After leaving Deep Purple, he had a short stint with the band Captain Beyond before retiring from music and becoming a doctor. In 1980, he was convinced to participate in a "reunion" of the band with a group of unknown musicians that flopped when the other band members took notice and filed a lawsuit. After the debacle, Evans returned to his medical practice and has since dropped all contact with the media or his former bandmates, to the point where he didn't even show up when Deep Purple was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.

Added DiffLines:

** Ritchie Blackmore ''also'' disliked the majority of ''Stormbringer''. In particular, he despised Glenn Hughes and David Coverdale's gradual shift toward a more FunkRock influenced style, which he infamously called "shoeshine music".

Added DiffLines:

** Likewise, most of the band have also distanced themselves from its follow-up ''The Battle Rages On...''. This was in large part due to the the state of the band at the time. Ian Gillan was practically forced back in against Blackmore's wishes after the lukewarm reception that his replacement Joe Lynn Turner had received. Though they did manage to finish the album, nobody was very happy with the end product. In fact, it was the final straw for Blackmore, who derisively called it "''The Cattle Grazes On''" before abruptly leaving during the album's tour.
** ''Everybody'' disliked the 1993 live album ''Come Hell or High Water'', which was recorded during the tour for ''The Battle Rages On...''. By this point, Blackmore's behavior had become beyond toxic, and he left the band forever less than a month after the album's recording. Not did Ritchie phone in his playing, not even bothering to play half of ''Highway Star'', but he also pulled stunts such as throwing drinks at cameramen, refusing to leave his dressing room and abruptly leaving without saying a word at the end of the show. The situation was so bad that Ian Gillan demanded that two full concerts worth of material be removed from circulation ''a full decade'' afterwards.

Added DiffLines:

* BreakupBreakout: Funnily enough, for such an influential band, this applies a lot.
** Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, and Coverdale's Whitesnake are obvious examples, being ''at least'' as well-known as Purple.
** Roger Glover, despite not being a household name carved out an impressive career post-Purple - creating an acclaimed rock opera, as well as producing for bands such as Status Quo, Nazareth, Whitesnake, Elf and most famously, played a huge role in shaping metal history by producing Judas Priest's seminal ''Sin After Sin''.

Names The Same is no longer a trope

* NamesTheSame: No, bassist Glenn Hughes of Marks III and IV isn't one of the Music/VillagePeople. And the album ''Stormbringer'' may not be related to Creator/MichaelMoorcock's work, or at least David Coverdale claims. In Ritchie Blackmore's case it's a nickname, he obviously isn't the first musician to be known as [[Music/JohnnyCash "The Man in Black"]].

* FanNickname: Mark <insert Roman numeral>; the current incarnation of the band is considered to be Mark VIII. Also, Man in Black for Ritchie Blackmore, due to his name and his preference for darker clothing.
** Ian Paice is called "Paicey" by his bandmates in order to distinguish him from Ian Gillan. Sometimes both Purple fans and bandmates call him "Little Ian" and Gillan "Big Ian."

Misuse

* AuthorExistenceFailure: Narrowly averted by Mark IV's guitarist Tommy Bolin; he died after Mark IV, and by extension the band (until 1984 at least), disbanded. Played straight by Jon Lord on July 16, 2012.

** Paul Rodgers from the band Free was considered for Ian Gillan's replacement in 1973, though that didn't end up happening.
** There were rumors going around for a while that Ritchie Blackmore was considering joining forces with [[Music/ThinLizzy Phil Lynott]] and Ian Paice to form some sort of power trio due to his dissatisfaction with the direction Deep Purple was going in early 1973, though Paice ended up talking him out of it and they simply stayed with Deep Purple and fired Roger Glover.
