** Lacey was originally supposed to have moved to Dog River to *start* The Ruby, not to take it over after her aunt died. In this scenario, Lacey would have come up with the name to invoke the idea of a “jewel of the prairie” instead of naming it after her Aunt Ruby.

** In Brent Butt’s original concept for the show, Emma had died sometime before the first episode, and Brent and Oscar’s frequent arguments would have been because of the loss of her as a mediating influence. Eventually it was decided that Oscar could just be naturally argumentative and that including Emma as a character would present more comedic and storytelling opportunities.

** Wanda was originally written as being a fair bit older than Brent instead of roughly the same age as him. None of the actresses they originally auditioned were up to snuff, so they decided to bring in Nancy Robertson, a known quantity in the Vancouver comedy scene at the time who was only in her early thirties. She not only nailed the role but also ended up marrying series creator and star Brent Butt.
