* OutOfOrder: Several episodes in season one were aired out of chronological order, as Disney wanted {{Holiday Episode}}s to fall on the real-life dates of their subject matter. For most episodes, this is hardly noticeable, but it is highly apparent in the HalloweenEpisode, "The Halloween Bash", which shows Chang still working with the Dragon Council to judge Jake's progress, despite airing immediately after the episode where Chang was arrested for conspiring with the Dark Dragon.

** "Act 4, Scene 15" show Trixie and Spud having full knowledge about
the existence of magic and Jake's responsibilities as the American Dragon, but the episode aired before "Professor Rotwood's Thesis", where they actually find out.
** The
HalloweenEpisode, "The Halloween Bash", which shows Chang still working with the Dragon Council to judge Jake's progress, despite airing immediately after the episode where Chang was arrested for conspiring with the Dark Dragon.

** Jake's mom Susan was planned to also have dragon powers, with his father Jonathan being aware of his wife's family being filled with dragons. Several episodes were written before it was decided that it would be more interesting if only the children had powers, and funnier if his dad was LockedOutOfTheLoop.

** Honestly, that's just the tip of the iceberg. The series creators had to fight tooth and nail for Jake to be allowed to breathe fire at anything that wasn't a fireplace or fly around without elbow pads and a helmet. Exactly WHERE in the world is turning into a dragon and flying imitable, anyway?

** The ArtEvolution of the second season was the result of [[http://web.archive.org/web/20070429175345/http://amdrag.blogspot.com/2006/10/changing-seasons-part-two.html the executives coming to dislike the first season's art style]], feeling that "the look was all over the place." Director Chris Roman was fired and replaced by Steve Loter as a result, with producers Eddie Guzelian and Matt Negrete giving Loter free rein to do whatever he wanted with the show's aesthetic, trusting his work on prior Disney shows.

** With ''WesternAnimation/TheLifeAndTimesOfJuniperLee''. Contrary to [[{{Follow The Leader}} popular belief]], this show did not copy off of American Dragon. Both of their respective animation studios finished within a year of each other and neither creator knew of the other's project till they were pretty much on the airwaves. Ironically both shows were subject of being ScrewedByTheNetwork.

*** Jonathan was originally going to be named "Chen" (with "Charlie" as his nickname). And just like with Susan, the dragon powers would've skipped his generation--specifically, it would've been because he was born during the Year of the Rabbit, and people could be born with dragon powers if they were born during the Year of the Dragon.
*** In addition, Susan’s name was originally Sarah Meyer-Long, and she was going to be Jewish.

** In "The Hunted", Jake says to Huntsgirl that "every Thorn has gotta have a Rose", a line which makes very little sense without the context that Rose's Huntsclan moniker had to be redubbed from "Thorn" to "Huntsgirl" at pretty much the last minute.
** In "The Academy", Sara's vision of the Huntsman's [[FinalSolution master plan]] consists of "magical creatures crying in agony". Despite it being previously established that Sara's visions [[PropheciesAreAlwaysRight always come true]], this part of the vision doesn't come anywhere close to coming to pass. As it turns out, the showrunners' original plan for the Huntsman's wish starting to be granted before he could be stopped was scrapped thanks to the two-part version of "Homecoming" being vetoed by the Disney executives, with this line not being rewritten to reflect that.
