Newlyweds Abie and Rosemary Levy (nee Murphy) are happily in love -- with one problem. His staunch Orthodox Jewish family wants him to marry a nice Jewish girl; her Irish-Catholic family was also expecting a similar spouse for her -- and neither of the in-laws know about the marriage. Hoping to secure his father Solomon's favor, Abie convinces Rosemary to pretend to be a Jewish girl named "Rosie Murpheski". Mr. Levy likes her enough to demand a Jewish marriage...which is promptly derailed when Mr. Patrick Murphy shows up with a priest in tow. Shenanigans ensue before the feuding families can accept the interfaith marriage.

* EntertaininglyWrong: Patrick Murphy obverses all the oranges festooning the place of his daughter's wedding, and leaps to the horrifying conclusion: his Rosemary is marrying a Protestant! When Patrick encounters Solomon Levy, the proud and obviously non-Protestant father of a NiceJewishBoy who by implausible coincidence is getting married to a certain "Rosie Murpheski" at the same time, he grills him about "all the A.P.A. decorations":
-->Solomon: Vell, I tell you why! The girl's from California!\\
Patrick: So's my daughter!\\
Solomon: Bud my son is marrying a Jewish girl!\\
Patrick: My daughter is marrying an Irish boy!\\
Solomon: My son isn't Irish!\\
Patrick: Well, my God! My daughter isn't Jewish!
* GlamorousWartimeSinger: Abie met Rosemary near the end of UsefulNotes/WorldWarI in France, where she used to sing for the troops. Her looks are pretty enough for Solomon to mistake her for an actress, a profession he distrusts.

* IWantGrandkids: In the very first scene, Solomon Levy explains why he's anxious to have his son Abie get married: "I want grandchildren -- dozens of them."

* ShiksaGoddess: Abie's father wouldn't stand for any NiceJewis Boy marrying a non-Jewish girl, so Abie has to trick his father into believing that Rosemary Murphy is actually Rosie Murpheski. The father doesn't find out the ruse until the Jewish wedding ceremony is well underway.

to:

* MyOwnPrivateIDo: Abie and Rosemary ultimately have three weddings: a Methodist elopement before their feuding parents get involved, a Jewish wedding to please Abie's father, and a Catholic wedding to please Rosemary's father.
* NotReallyMarriedPlot: The parents try to nullify the leads' marriage when they find out that Abie and Rose married each other under assumed identities. This fails because of their prior elopement in Jersey City, which happens to be totally legitimate.
* ShiksaGoddess: Abie's father wouldn't stand for any NiceJewis Boy NiceJewishBoy marrying a non-Jewish girl, so Abie has to trick his father into believing that Rosemary Murphy is actually Rosie Murpheski. The father doesn't find out the ruse until the Jewish wedding ceremony is well underway.

Added DiffLines:

*TroubledSympatheticBigot: Abie and Rosemary know that Abie's father, Solomon Levy, wouldn't stand for his son marrying anyone but a Jewish girl, and that Rosemary's Irish-Catholic father, Patrick Murphy, feels similarly about her marriage prospects. The ruse by which they get parental consent from both of their families is acrimoniously exposed once Solomon and Patrick meet, but eventually the fathers reconcile with each other and accept their children's marriage thanks to a third-act ContrivedCoincidence.

Abie's Irish Rose is a 1922 play by Creator/AnneNichols.

The play was twice adapted to film. The 1928 version was directed by Creator/VictorFleming and starred Charles "Buddy" Rogers and Creator/NancyCarroll.The 1946 version was directed by A. Edward Sutherland and starred Creator/RichardNorris and Creator/JoanneDru. It was also adapted into a radio serial in 1945.

!!Tropes:
* IrishmanAndAJew: The play is about a Jewish young man marrying an Irish-Catholic young woman and the subsequent familial fallout.
* MalignedMixedMarriage: Neither the Jewish Mr. Levy nor the Catholic Mr. Murphy are happy about their children's interfaith marriage.
* SueDonym: When Abie's father asks about Rosemary's family name, she blurts out "Murphy", but Abie quickly interrupts and changes it to the slightly more Jewish-sounding "Murpheski".
* SurpriseMultipleBirth: Solomon and Patrick, though still angry at each other, are eager to see Abie and Rosemary's new baby. Solomon wants it to be a boy like his son Abie, and Patrick is eager for it to be a girl like his daughter Rosemary. It conveniently turns out to be both, so the feud can easily be settled.
* UntoUsASonAndDaughterAreBorn: Rosemary conveniently gives birth to male-female twins, which appeases her feuding father (who wanted a granddaughter) and father-in-law (who wanted a grandson).
