** Loki calls Black Widow a "mewling quim", which includes [[PoliticallyIncorrectVillain archaic slang]] for the [[CountryMatters female anatomy]]. According to WordOfGod, apparently the Radar actually picked this one up, but [[ActuallyPrettyFunny they let him use it anyway]].
** Loki's scepter trick fails on Tony, who notes that "performance issues" affect about "one out of five."
** Tony's line to Banner suggesting he uses a "big bag of weed" to stay calm is said very quickly, probably for this exact reason.
** When Tony asks Pepper what they would do if she "bunked over" in his tower, she whispers something in his ear. His expression says it all.
** When Natasha is being "interrogated" by the rogue Russian officer, she mentions that she knew what he "had planned" for the evening before she was "captured" and that she ''prefers'' the situation she's in.
** When Natasha tries to convince Bruce to join the team, Bruce asks, "What if I refuse?", to which Natasha replies with a small but earnest smile, "I'll persuade you." Also later when she says that Banner didn't come with her "because I bat my eyelashes."

* {{Fauxshadow}}: Come on, you know you thought the [[spoiler:Mjölnir/Cap's Shield shockwave trick]] was going to come in handy during the climax... but it doesn't.

** It goes by very quickly, but when the Hulk is fighting several Chitauri on a rooftop, he palms one guy's head and crushes his skull like a grape.
** Also when Cap fights the Chitauri after giving orders to the [=NYPD=] he grabs one of their arm cannons, cuts the arm off and then dumps it out of the gun.

** When Loki is being led to his prison onboard S.H.I.E.L.D.'s airship, he briefly smirks at [[spoiler:Bruce Banner]]. Guess what his real reason for being captured is?

* InCaseYouForgotWhoWroteIt: The movie's full title is ''Marvel's The Avengers'', probably to help avoid confusion with the [[Film/TheAvengers1998 1998 film]] based on the [[Series/TheAvengers unrelated series of the same name]].

* GreenAesop: This is central to the plot. The Tesseract is a clean power-source, Stark Tower runs on self-sustaining energy, and so on. Although, one of the key fights of the film ends up [[CueIrony leveling half a forest]]. It also causes severe complications at the climax -- self-sustaining energy is hard to just switch off.

** Loki choosing to site the main battle in New York City is also an example of this. Cities are much harder to capture or hold than open territory, and New York, with its many skyscrapers, limited sight lines and maze of underground tunnels, is harder than most.

* GuysSmashGirlsShoot: A rare gender inversion in the team of Hawkeye and Black Widow: while both are entirely capable in the other field (she's a crack shot and he can certainly deal damage hand-to-hand), Natasha is the superior martial artist while Clint is the finer marksman. The trope is still somewhat played straight in that while Natasha is certainly technically more skilled in hand-to-hand combat, Clint is still able to get the upper hand thanks to his superior brute strength, forcing Natasha to resort to more [[ManBitesMan creative tactics]] in order to defeat him.

* ImpossiblyCoolWeapon: Front and center (and [[InvokedTrope invoked]] by [[SugarWiki/VisualEffectsOfAwesome Method Studios]] [[http://www.methodstudios.com/work/the-avengers in the main-on-end credits]]).

* LastVillainStand: It becomes clear that Loki's entire plan is this to some extent; he already lost Asgard, the kingdom he actually wanted, in ''Thor'', and so he tries to take the Earth instead, mainly to spite his brother. Before and during the final battle, Tony Stark explains at some length that "there is no version of this where you come out on top", Thor incredulously asks "You think this madness will end with your rule!?" and Loki doesn't actually refute what they say. On the contrary, there are several points throughout the film where it's made very clear that he sees no other option but to keep going, and the audience knows that he is being threatened with a FateWorseThanDeath if he fails to deliver the Tesseract to [[spoiler:his mysterious benefactor, Thanos.]] Essentially, he knows that he'll almost certainly fail, but his pride won't let him surrender without trying every trick he can think of and it takes [[spoiler:a hilariously one-sided confrontation with The Incredible Hulk]] to convince him that he really can't win.

* HatePlague: Not that the Avengers [[MoreThanMindControl weren't getting on each other's nerves before]], but just being in the room as Loki's mind-controlling scepter supernaturally raises the tensions to near-violence. When Banner starts getting angry, he picks up the scepter without realizing it. [[{{Revision}} Revised]] by Kevin Feige: Loki's scepter is made from [[spoiler:the Mind Stone, one of the Infinity Stones.]]

* LeeroyJenkins: Iron Man gives us this gem when Thor arrives on Earth snatches Loki from the quinjet:

* JustYouAndMeAndMyGuards: "Just the two of us, huh?" He's surrounded by S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.

* KissOfLife: Averted, but thoroughly lampshaded and PlayedForLaughs.

* TheLastThingYouEverSee: Loki tells Black Widow that has this in mind for Barton:

** Steve is forced to interrupt Tony's technobabble-laden explanation of how he's going to get back out of the engine: "Speak English!"
** Both inverted and played straight in an earlier conversation, when Tony Stark is delighted to be able to speak seemingly TechnoBabble with Bruce Banner, much to the bemusement of Captain America.

** [[spoiler:Coulson's decision to face Loki alone would count as one. Even with the big anti-Destroyer gun, he seemed to think his death would inspire the Avengers to work together in order to avenge him]].

** Black Widow uses a fallen alien weapon to use against them at one point, and is actually very proficient at it.

** Also, Tony's BadassBoast to Loki in Stark Tower was undoubtedly at least in part to stall for time while Jarvis prepped his Mark VII Suit.

** After the Avengers repel the Chitauri invasion, the Other informs his master that humans are not a species to be messed with.

Once she is tasked with a much more important mission she quickly breaks free and [[CurbStompBattle dispatches them]].

** [[spoiler:Selvig managed to install a fail-safe in Loki's portal that would allow it to be shut down]], even while he was deep under Loki's control.

** This is Loki's favorite tactic, but it is used against him in the climax. Tony realizes that he and Loki are NotSoDifferent, and this helped him figure out that Loki would sacrifice pragmatism for showmanship, which would end up biting Loki hard.

** Another subtle one for ''Film/CaptainAmericaTheWinterSoldier'': Before Banner suggests other methods, SHIELD attempts to find Loki by tapping into pretty much every camera or digital device on the planet. [[spoiler:This is also how HYDRA will pinpoint targets for its KillEmAll scheme to eliminate any and all potential challengers before they even suspect danger.]]
** When Selvig asks Barton "where did you find all these people?" Barton's response is simply, "SHIELD has many enemies." As ''Film/CaptainAmericaTheWinterSoldier'' will reveal, [[spoiler:it's likely these are just SHIELD staffers who know how to subvert and destroy their own organization]].
** Also, the SHIELD Helicarrier has a cargo hold full of HYDRA weapons and crates stamped with the HYDRA logo. One can wonder how many HYDRA ''items'' were present on board during the operation.

** When the S.H.I.E.L.D. sensors interrupt Banner's speech ("Sorry kids, you don't get to see my party trick) it shows that the energy source is in NYC. (Banner gets a quick OhCrap moment.)

* GrenadeHotPotato: A group of alien Chitauri soldiers during the invasion of Manhattan have cornered a large number of civilians in a bank. From the second floor, one of them prepares to throw a powerful energy grenade below to kill dozens of people. They get interrupted by Captain America, however, who knocks the grenade out of the Chitauri's hand and starts brawling with them. As the counter on the bomb audibly winds down, one of the Chitauri frantically picks up the grenade and starts turning around to throw it at Cap - who jumps into the air and holds his shield between them. The Chitauri tries to throw the bomb after him - as much to hurt Cap as to just get the grenade away from himself - but he can't even manage to get it out of his hand before it blows up, enveloping the entire second floor of the bank in the explosion and blasting Cap out a window and onto a car below.

* HelmetsAreHardlyHeroic: A SHIELD fighter pilot lifts the visor from his eyes for no apparent reason besides letting the audience get a better look at his fear when his attempt to subdue the Hulk fails.

** Averted by Captain America - he orders Iron Man to set a perimeter, Hawkeye to act as spotter, Thor to close the gate to prevent more enemy coming through, and while his command to Hulk isn't the greatest, it's probably the best tactical use one can make of an enormous green rage monster.
