* Episode 30 is tough to watch for fans of Francis. When he and Nadja are talking, some homeless orphans throw rocks at him, accusing him of bringing their orphanage to ruin. It turns out that some time before, Francis made a donation to said orphanage thinking things would be fine and dandy. Unbeknownst to him or the children, the second the director received the donation, he became greedy and decided to take off with it, leaving for parts unknown. With no one to run the orphanage, it shut down and became nothing more than abandoned ruins, leaving the children without a home to return to. Francis is horrified when he learns the truth, and the children are convinced that Francis somehow ''corrupted'' their beloved director—even though Francis [[InsaneTrollLogic had no way of knowing the director's true colors beforehand]]—and hold him responsible for it all. Later, Francis tries to put bricks on the remains of the orphanage in the rain, completely devastated by [[UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom what his attempt at philanthropy has done to these poor kids.]]

* Episode 18, with the AdultFear on display of a mother who'd lovingly raised her son, who loved her in return and set out to make money to provide her with, having to learn the horrible, ugly truth that her son has grown up to be [[LoanShark a terrible person who's been wrecking other people's lives just to make more money.]] Especially the part where Nadja, Kennosuke, and TJ return to visit Irma at her house purely because they recognize how depressed the news must have made her and wanted to know that she'd be okay, which lead to Irma and the three kids embracing and crying together.

* Rosemary's FreakOut over the apparent destruction of her dreams is heartbreaking. She tries to reassure herself that she's still "Princess Rosemary" and that a prince is coming for her, seeing the fantasy version of her in her reflection as usual. But then the lights go off and the reflection fades to reveal her true self in her ragged looking dress, soon accompanied by the sound of laughter from the party-goers downstairs, as though her dreams were being laughed at and ridiculed. It's enough to make reality around poor Rosemary start to distort as she grabs her head and can barely hold back tears. Now, she [[FaceHeelTurn goes on to squander the audience sympathy]], but the sympathy ''is'' still present [[BreakTheCutie during this]] [[GoMadFromTheRevelation particular scene.]]

* The stories of the families in episode 15. Especially the ex-convict wanting to reunite and reconnect with his family.

* The death of Rita's parents. [[spoiler: They ran into a fire to save other members of the circus act that were trapped, but they didn't make it out alive.]] It happened right in front of Rita and traumatized her so much that she was left unable to speak again.
* The end of episode 26 is a ''gutpunch'' of a BreakTheCutie moment for Nadja as she realizes [[spoiler: not only does she have stronger feelings for Keith, who is the true identity of the Black Rose Thief that she never got along with in their previous meetings, than she does for Francis, but she'd fallen for Francis at all due to a case of mistaken identity - it was in truth ''Keith'' who, while dressed up like his twin brother, had saved her in Episode 1. The reason Francis hadn't remembered saving her when she next met him is because ''he never did save her'', and that was in fact her meeting him for the ''first time.'']]

* The second half of episode 8 in ''Anime/AshitaNoNadja'', which deals with Raphael's backstory. Told to Nadja by Sylvie, who [[AllLoveIsUnrequited deeply and selflessly love Raphael but can't tell him]] because [[spoiler: he's still grieving over his dead first wife]]. And Nadja actually acknowledging that [[LoveHurts love isn't only joy and happiness]]... Ouch, so sad.

* Episode 5 has a moment where TJ and Kennosuke break out into a fight due to differing beliefs on how to interact with a lost little girl. The little girl bursts into sobbing and wailing, the sound of which is absolutely heartbreaking. It doubles as a Heartwarming Moment when Nadja holds the crying child tight and soothes her by singing the lullaby she'd always sang back at Applefield's.
