Meanwhile, he's still despised and looked down on, has paid an incredibly high price for whatever he's worked for, and has been betrayed by almost everyone he knows. They studied ancient technology and pacified lesser species (if they did not integrate them into their own alliance). They tried to spread their religion to the aforementioned lesser species, but they did not accept their proposal. They decided to bring reason to said species, and it led to their failure. * He was born to a poor family in a poor part of the nation, and learned a new philosophy at a young age. Out of respect for the new planet's history, he decided to restore the honour and legacy of a once great, but corrupted hero, who had died years earlier, by adopting his name and identity. And out of sheer kindness and good will, he adopted an orphaned girl (who didn't even belong to his species) and lovingly raised her as his own daughter. Now he remains a proud defender of peace and justice, wearing his scars with dignity and living as a symbol of the government's fight to restore order and put down a malignant insurgency. She possesses magic, which she uses to the most responsible of ends; on one occasion, she comforted a victim of molestation, psychically soothing away their doubts and insecurities, and on another, she healed a boy suffering from severe obsessive-compulsive disorder. She devotes vast amounts of her time and effort to stopping a vile EldritchAbomination who plans on devouring the world. Her ultimate goal is to stop the reign of the corrupt [[TheCaligula Caligulas]] dominating the land with their tyrannical rule, end the murders and rapes and human sacrifices they constantly practice, and make the world a better place. Sadly, despite her tireless efforts on their behalf, even saving their lives multiple times, her four companions senselessly hate and distrust her. [[spoiler: Senna Wales, ''Everworld'']].

* He just wants his county to be run the way he knows it should be, and to make it hazzard-free. [[spoiler: Boss Hogg of ''The Dukes of Hazzard'']]

His many inventions have oftentimes been destroyed by that alien and its inhuman cohorts. His popularity is so great he was even elected to the highest office in the land, only to once again have that monster destroy everything he had worked so hard for. * He was born into nothing, with a mother who passed away as she gave birth to him, and a father who let him be raised in an orphanage where horrific things happened. The horror of his mother's death drove him to seek a solution to humanity's most pressing threat: mortality. Eventually betrayed by the man he trusted the most, he fought an unkillable threat on his own, and died facing that threat despite his many efforts to overcome death itself. * A victim of the brutality of his own parents, who tried to murder him with a trash compactor, he was taken to a new school when his body was so broken that much of it had to be replaced with cybernetics. Even then, he was rejected by the other students, and he began a years-long but complex relationship with a teacher who became the headmistress of the school. Many years later, he found true love with a brilliant, gifted [[TheChessmaster chessmaster]] who supported him in his long-range goals. In their last encounter, that headmistress did her utmost to blast him to pieces. [[spoiler: Deathlist of the ''Whateley Universe'']].
* A disabled individual who has worked for years to overcome his handicap while making it clear to those around him that he does have that disability. He has had several encounters with a security force who would love nothing better than to capture him, and yet his brilliant plans have always failed due to sheer bad luck. * A genius mathematician who found that he had real-world aptitudes as well, he built a massive, highly-successful conglomerate that was the greatest of his day, only to be persecuted by a cocaine-addled vigilante who ultimately killed him in a fight to the death at a scenic vista. [[spoiler: Professor Moriarity of the ''Sherlock Holmes'' tales]]
* A brilliant young woman was given a rare gift by an old master. She then became one of his staunchest disciples, along with her oldest friend, with whom she began an unconventional but meaningful relationship. When she was cruelly dumped in an alternate reality, she set out to find help and find her way back, only to discover that everything in this horrid new world was changed: the one she had supported was gone, the one she loved now despised her, and there was a horrible doppelganger of herself who shot her and impersonated her. Ultimately, she made her way back to her own reality, only to meet a cruel fate. [[spoiler: Vampire Willow from ''Buffy the Vampire Slayer'']]

* A noble officer who watches countless soldiers under his command be killed and finds the apathetic response to their deaths intolerable, forcing him to take steps to educate his people on their troops' sacrifice. Eventually ends with him sending his own elite commando team to eliminate a group of brutal and ruthless terrorists, but is killed by two renegade soldiers under his former command who shoot down his helicopter, stab his wounded troops to death, and shoved a knife into his eye as he tried to defend himself while unarmed. [[spoiler: General Shepherd, ''Modern Warfare 2'']].
* A traumatized mother whose children were stolen from her reaches out to bring them back and help them free her from her prison, only to have one of them kill the other and then shoot her repeatedly. Later, she tries to find the only man who she loves and tells him how she feels about him, only to have him repeatedly push her away. Eventually, she does express her love to him in a way he understands, they have a child, and they end up together forever. [[spoiler: Alma, ''F.E.A.R.'']]

* A victim of class prejudice all his life, he is willing to ally himself with and advance the cause of races against whom most of his fellow men are prejudiced. With unconventional tactics and creative thinking, he has managed to defeat many wizards who were at least as powerful as him, who regarded him with arrogant contempt. [[spoiler: Xykon, ''Order of the Stick'']]. Such a CompleteMonster that I had to resort to that lame "class prejudice" pun to make this entry work.
* He loved his mother and wanted her to love him back, but unfortunately, she was a notoriously flighty, manipulative woman and never really returned his love as strongly. He believed strongly in his people's right to self-determination, self-definition, and independence, and was willing to go to war to preserve it, planning and executing a brilliant strike that all but wiped out the enemy, who were an extremely corrupt, dysfunctional bunch who, in many ways, had brought their destruction upon themselves; even one of their leaders admitted that they had never really asked why they deserved to survive the war. Another group of said enemy resorted to war crimes, including repeated rape of [=POWs=], in prosecuting their war against this man's forces. He fought hard to keep his people united when a schism developed, but in the end, was willing to make peace in exchange for the assurance that his people would be able to go their own way and live and reproduce as they wanted to. However, this truce was ruined by the murderousness and vengefulness of two of his creators, his way of life was destroyed forever, and he was driven to despondently commit suicide. [[spoiler: Brother Cavil/Number One, ''Battlestar Galactica'']].

* The son of a man who fought against Adolf Hitler, and a devoted and passionate lover. He even made sure to check whether his tools worked properly. He was betrayed by a junior officer, his colleagues were manipulated and ordered to their deaths, and his family fortune was stolen by a group of duplicitous foreign agents. When he stood up for himself, he was killed slowly and painfully. [[spoiler: Colonel Volgin, ''Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater'']]

* Devoted to her family's legacy and traditions, she helped found a society dedicated to preserving their way of life in the face of encroaching outside influence. She waged a campaign to make this dream of national unity a reality, but her leader fell due to faulty intelligence. She was one of the loyal few who attempted to find him, but was caught and imprisoned until many years later, when her leader was ressurected and subsequently freed her. Sadly, she died in battle, defending her leader to the last. [[spoiler:Bellatrix Lestrange from ''Harry Potter'']].
* A strong proponent of exploration, he joined the military to bring his people's influence and technology to other worlds and create a partnership that would alleviate his people's famine. He even inititated a relationship with one of the locals and had a daughter, whom he doted on. However, xenophobic terrorist drove out his unit in favor of a moralistic and expansionist empire, and his father was betrayed and murdered by an operative of a ruthless intelligence agency, who continued to harass and attempt to kill him. Though he made many overtures to his former home and its new rulers, he was rejected in favor of a charismatic cult leader, who locked him away in another dimension with hell spawn for objecting. [[spoiler: Skrain Dukat]].

* A savvy politician who steps into office after his brother's untimely death. Although he does his best to deal with threats of invasion and treasonous rumors, and protects his country and the woman he loves, he and most of his court fall victim to his adopted son's tragic and dangerous madness. [[spoiler: Claudius, ''Hamlet'']].
* A witty and charismatic war hero, he nonetheless faces discrimination and hate because of his deformity. He reluctantly accepts the crown in order to save his country, still recovering from a bloody civil war, from the instability of a child ruler. Betrayed by his most loyal supporter, threatened with supernatural interference, and facing a rebellion spearheaded by a man with a tenuous claim to the throne, he has terrible nightmares and begins to doubt himself. In the end, he is killed brutally in battle, valiantly defending himself to the last. (Later monarchs would smear his name in a relentless propaganda campaign from which his reputation will probably never recover.) [[spoiler: Richard III, and it's meta, too.]]

* He'd been taking great care to ensure the survival of one of the last remnants of humanity for centuries...only to have an old, malfunctioning bot start breaking everything! That little brat even tricked most of his comrades into helping wreck the place, and led to the brutal killing of the one comrade who stuck by him! All to take humanity to a lifeless rock millions of light-years away. [[spoiler: Auto from ''WALL-E'']].

* He ''never'' ignores you. There will always be a room for you. Treats all his people like family. Always willing to explain, even if he seems self-contradictory at first. A firm hand in this time of war, ready to make the hard decisions. [[spoiler: Big Brother from ''1984'']]

* She's a girl, just doing her job. Her boss isn't doing enough for the job, so she decides to try one of her own ideas. This leads to her getting killed by her coworker. [[spoiler: Ryoko Asakura, from ''The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya'']]

* A police officer who was crippled when a superhero failed to live up to his responsibilities, but subsequently managed to empower himself. He then dedicated himself to helping the hero who failed him become a better person. [[spoiler: Hunter Zolomon/Zoom II, ''The Flash'']]

* A brilliant young man, sickened by the inefficiency and pettiness of a PhysicalGod presiding over the local cycle of death and reincarnation, sides with an angel to resist mind control and save his hometown. [[spoiler: Sho Minamimoto, ''The World Ends With You''.]]
* A stylin', on-the-ball, forgiving guy, who wants to fix what's wrong with the world. He makes a few bad choices along the way, but he's willing to bet his life on the outcome. Tragically, he's hindered by his own incompetent, scheming subordinates, a HeroicSociopath, who's willing to kill his own friends to achieve selfish goals, and a ChaoticEvil maniac, and suceeds only temporarily. [[spoiler: The Conductor, also ''[=TWEWY=]''.]]

* Brilliant, musical virtuoso, but greatly confused when it comes to the subject of love. Mistreated throughout his life due to his deformities, shunned and feared because of his eccentricities. Wanted the best for his one and only love, but ultimately decided to give her up to her other suitor, as long as she is happy. [[spoiler: Erik, ''The Phantom Of The Opera'']].
* A scientific genius, who got frustrated and eventually broke down to insanity, because of his repeated failures, the side effects of his experiment, and the harsh treatment he was subjected to after the experiment. [[spoiler: Griffin, ''The Invisible Man'']].
** And, on a different situation, he had saved the world, with promises of forgiveness and a cure, but then was betrayed and denied of the reward he had deserved so much. To save himself, he was forced to band with the enemy, but, after being found out by the people who had denied him his rightful rewards, was labeled a traitor and subjected to [[RapeAsDrama horrendous]] [[FateWorseThanDeath punishments]] before being killed. [[spoiler: The situation was detailed in ''The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen'', volume two]]
* As a child, he saw his mother die and vowed never to let any of his beloveds die any more. Ironically, in his misled attempts to save his pregnant wife's life, his actions led her to lose the will to live. Driven to bitterness because of his failure to save his wife, he did nothing but follow his master's commands. But when he discovered his son was still alive, he tried to take his son with him, to be together. Are the spoilers really needed? * A resourceful young man with both creativity and pragmatism, his ability to think outside the box earns him a difficult but important assignment, which he not only completes with ease but goes beyond to the second mile. Despite being orphaned at an early age and educated as a ScholarshipStudent in an elitist school, he is always polite and cheerful, never without a smile on his boyishly handsome face. * The member of a species who grew up on a world overrun by evil alien invaders. Became a legendary warrior, rallied his people behind him, and liberated his planet from the oppressors, driving them back to the worlds from whence they came. Sadly, he was unable to enjoy his people's newfound freedom as his one true love was lost in battle, leaving him with a broken heart he was never able to repair. Then, his people's former oppressors acted like ''they'' were the victims! Worse, both standard galactic government and its protectors, both of whom claimed to be pillars of light and justice, sided with his enemies and made his planet pay for it. To top it all off, when he took an honest job to help get his people back on their feet, those same oppressors made another attempt to ravage his homeworld. When he tried to quit in order to kick some more butt, he was all but enslaved when an "accident" was arranged. What was left of his body was brainwashed and rebuilt for the purpose of being manipulated as part of a plot to take over the galaxy, completing the sad, unfortunate journey of a freedom fighter who only wanted the best for his people. [[spoiler: General Grievous from ''Star Wars''. And to be perfectly honest, it's not that far removed from the truth either.]]

* A TV show with an innovative idea - a {{Shonen}} MagicalGirl series. A hero and heroine work together to stop horrible things happening. With a FunnyAnimal guide and a group of friends, nothing could go wrong! [[spoiler: The dub of ''Card Captor Sakura''.]]

* They are a wealthy and influential family, respected as pillars of the community. Despite their lofty status, however, they are very close and loving towards each other and are paticularly protective towards their women. This is due partly to the fact that they suffer from a tragic condition which has forced them to adopt practices that society would frown upon in order to survive - practices which they must keep secret lest they be ruined. They have recently faced a crisis in the form of a self rightous busy body who kidnapped one of their childeren as part of a schene to turn her against her family and the traditions that have insured their survival. They were able to rescue her, but can they undo the damage done to her impressionable mind? [[spoiler: The Kuhoin Family from ''Kure-nai'']].

* After saving the human race from extinction, he began a very ambitious genetic research project. On the way, he helped human civilization achieve incredible power. [[spoiler:Lavos from ''Chrono Trigger'']].

* Horrified by government-sponsored oppression in the world, a brilliant business tycoon constructed a city out of the reach of his enemies in order to build his dreams. Attracting the greatest minds humanity has to offer, he built a utopia where every person was able to achieve their highest potential. As the leader of this paradise, he helped develop and distribute a miraculous compound that cured any disease, and permanently ended the threat of discrimination. He tirelessly fought against organized crime, crushing the most notorious mob boss in the city - all while adopting young girls who couldn't find homes. Tragically, however, his success was short-lived, as he was murdered by his own son. Nonetheless, his legacy lives on, as his city still shows its devotion to his life, achievements, and vision. [[spoiler: Andrew Ryan, ''[=BioShock=]'']].
* After a loving father was denied justice for the murder of his wife and daughter, he launched a crusade to reform the corrupt justice system of his society. Even after being arrested for his tireless efforts, he never compromised his principles, calling out the judge - the same one who originally denied him justice - for hiding behind layers of legal defenses to mask the truth and continuing his campaign from behind bars. Despite his opponents' claims, he never sank to the same level as his enemies, always achieving victory through intelligence, charm, and meticulous planning. Though he nearly succeeded in prompting a regime change in the heavy-handed government, he was eventually stopped by a self-serving prosecutor - who had violated his civil rights, and who had allowed his family's killer to escape justice - whose job he was trying to save. [[spoiler: Clyde Shelton, ''Law Abiding Citizen'']]
* Though born into the world's foremost scientific and industrial family, this brilliant young woman constantly trained her martial talents, in order to gain her father's recognition. When meteors rained down on the world, killing most of the world's population and destroying both of the major world powers, she helped calm chaos and dissent, helping to restore order to the world. Recognzing that few could survive in the harsh new world after the meteor strikes, she sought to ensure that worthy individuals would not be burdened by others. A truly gifted general, her plans for ensuring world peace were only disrupted when she was betrayed by her two sisters. Despite the loss of her home, the destruction of her army, and her sisters' betrayal, she lives on, waiting for a chance to prove her worth to her deceased father and avenge his death at his enemies' hands. [[spoiler: Tabitha Caulder, ''Advance Wars: Days of Ruin'']].
* Dispatched to a distant planet filled with hostile creatures and abandoned by his superiors, this military hero searched for a resource vital to humanity's survival. He took excellent care of each and every one of his men, keeping them alive and focused on their mission in spite of the constant attacks from the hostile alien race surrounding him. When diplomacy failed to secure the critical resource, this inspiring figure fought on the front lines, personally leading his men in a daring assault on the enemy's home base. Upon discovering that the aliens were ruled by a hive-mind structure that spanned the entire planet, he attempted to destroy the alien menace and ensure the survival of the human race. Tragically, he was killed in combat, betrayed by one of his most favored soldiers, while his forces were overrun by the alien hordes. Nonetheless, his valor under fire and concern for his men cause many to mark him, rather than his inhuman opponents, as the true hero of Pandora. [[spoiler: Colonel Miles Quaritch, ''Avatar'']]
* This military mastermind and political genius, constantly derided by his opponents for his short stature, transformed his divided, demoralized nation into one of the most powerful empires in the world. Though constantly outnumbered, he led his forces to victory in dozens of battles, forging an invincible army. Realizing that the weak government of his country could not save his people, he launched a non-violent coup that finally brought the decade of chaos in his nation to an end. He made incredible advancements in military organization, economics, and politics, changing the face of a continent forever. Despite the constant interference of his tyrannical foes, this revolutionary hero overcame overwhelming odds on multiple occasions, only surrendering when his enemies destroyed their own realms to deny him victory. Despite his removal from office, he returned to lead his people when they needed him most, finally admitting defeat to his arch-enemy after a pitched battle. Feared as a force of nature by his foes, he was ultimately exiled from his homeland and sent to a remote island where he could not threaten the established order - in vain, as the chain of events that he set in motion eventually freed nations worldwide from oppression. [[spoiler: Napoleon Bonaparte. Napoleon was hated and feared [[ValuesDissonance at the time]], so I've classified him as a villain.]]

* A skilled warrior - in fact, a multiple-time champion - who always knows when to jump at the call and who has devoted his life to saving people from the abuse of illicit substances. [[spoiler: CM Punk, ''[=WWE=]'' and ''Ring of Honor'']]
* He's a childlike being manipulated by a soulless child, taking his frustrations out on the universe past, present, and future. When not being trapped in a device powered by Satan himself, he is constantly assualted by other wicked children possessing psychic powers and More Dakka. He fights solely for survival, not even knowing how he is defending himself, while simply crying out for a friend. Is eventually destroyed by an all-knowing, all powerful being from another universe who only got involved because the other wicked children had enough sanity left to pray for their intervention. * A man who, in one reality, merely wanted to end his own torture through time travel, and, in another, was rejected by his shallow, ditzy neighbor as a teenager. Regardless of his origin, he's admitted to feeling lonely inside, despite having won a Presidential election, and having astounding technology at his fingertips. At least he has an unusual, but loving son at his side. [[spoiler: Dr. Insano, ''The Spoony Experiment'' and ''Atop the Fourth Wall'']].
** Different character, same universe: He is a being who only wants to free his kind from their oppressors. In addition, he escapes his own torment at the hands of a trigger-happy master who gets easily provoked over works of fiction. [[spoiler: Mechakara, ''Atop the Fourth Wall'']].
** An enthusiastic youth who is more than happy to promote under-appreciated comic book artists with rather unique styles. [[spoiler: 90's Kid, ''Atop the Fourth Wall''. Okay, he's not really a villain, but writing a Paint The Hero Black entry would have been ''way'' too easy.]]

* He's a funny, intelligent guy who just wants to escape his hellish job by getting himself a ''divine'' promotion. [[spoiler: Hades, Disney's ''Hercules'']]
* Feeling threatened by a gigantic colony of beings that could easily take anyone down if they so chose, he strikes a deal with them that ensures they will never harm him or his comrades. In the end, the colony goes against this deal, and they horrifically feed him to the creatures he fears most. [[spoiler: Hopper, ''A Bug's Life'']]

* A secret organization with goals as lofty as saving the world, creating world peace, fighting evil, and exploring space. [[spoiler:Team Rocket, ''Pokémon'']].

* A wizard who fled civilization for the sake of forbidden love, and defied Death itself to guide the footsteps of his powerful young son. [[spoiler: Ipslore the Red from ''Sourcery''.]]
* After their own civilization was horrifically destroyed by psychic slavers, they took responsibility for making sure no one else ever did such a thing again, in the galaxy. * An immortal creature born in another time, forced to watch an entirely alien presence destroy his realm down to its foundations, and ultimately shafted into the monotonous, thankless job of separating the souls for Heaven or Hell. When he actually tries to move into the regular universe to see whether the new guy has done something that's worth banishing him from his beloved plane of reality, he gets rudely pushed back and essentially given the finger, and, subsequently, was typecasted in the worst imaginable manner. And then the cards are all down, and he decides it's time to kick out the intruder for essentially creating all sources of conflict and strife in the Universe, perhaps even the Multiverse, accelerating what the intruder was doing to do to everybody anyway, so he can restore his home as it was. He gets kicked out again by a combined force of thousands. [[spoiler: Nekron, ''Blackest Night''.]]
* An older, gently smiling man with a knack for excellent rousing speeches and a deep love for good music, who just wants to give his men what they want. [[spoiler: The Major, ''Hellsing''.]]
* A brave warrior who pledged his life to a powerful god, loyally serving him across the ages as he fought against an eldritch abomination and its dastardly plans, which involved forcing random civilians and a random family across several generations to directly or indirectly serve it by means of a dangerous tome of arcane magic, in ways including insanity-fueled murder and implied suicides, and even what amounts to genocide in bases allied with said god. * A man who, after witnessing his world destroyed by a raging, unstoppable monstrosity, went back in time to prepare his past self for what was to come. That way, when the beast comes, there will be somebody to stop it before it destroys everything. [[spoiler:Kessler from ''[=inFamous=]''.]] Oh wait...

* There was once a man, a man with unshakeable belief in himself and in order, who was born with the right to rule over and protect his world. He also had to see to that world's, and therefore his, interests and resources. When he looked around his home, he saw his order implemented to perfection, so much so that his people called him their God. Oh, he had to keep them on their toes every now and then, and had to give them a large amount of work to do, but on a planet like his, harsh environs and all, this was very necessary. He then looked to the endless stars and planets out beyond his realm, and thought that he should bring his order to the chaos out there, maybe even create an entire state, comprising them all in perfect lawful harmony. His, of course. After all, his way had worked so well here, he should bring it everywhere!
** The nearest world, however, was not very receptive to his ideas, or his requisition of territory (they didn't even need it!). In fact, they and their incompetent, superstitious, blowhard of a leader launched a massive, completely pointless war with the man, taxing his world's meager resources almost to its breaking point. Peace came with a terrible, personal cost: the ruler's very own son. In his own son's place was that of his enemy, who would become, despite what little attention the busy ruler could spare him (and military training, too), a lumbering oaf who, more often than not, roared off on reckless campaigns which did not help (or even hindered) his 'father'. Oh, how the man tried to make the impetuous child understand that his attempts to please were going the wrong way, but somehow, none of it got through.
** The Ruler would look elsewhere to bring his ideas to full flowering, resources to properly sustain his governance, worlds lush and chaotic, clearly meant for his fiery gaze to meet and put the law to. He would meet his biological son many more times in his search, now a man in his prime, a nearly unparalleled warrior. Sadly, this most worthy son had been raised and thoroughly indoctrinated by his old foe, and could not be swayed from their inconsiderate and illogical ways by any means. In all their encounters, the father would always praise his wayward son and his fighting ability, no matter how harsh the fighting, no matter how vitriolic the outburst in return.
** Eventually, the Ruler would come across a little blue world in the backwaters of an average galaxy, which nevertheless had many extraordinary things and people upon it. So ''chaotic'', though! Many times he would attempt to make the people of this world see things his way, but he would always be thwarted by the self-righteous hypocrites who would have none of it, foremost among them, a man who didn't even belong to that world! The Ruler gradually became tired of it, seeking a way to easily and '''instantly''' bring order to the cosmos, a way which he could handle within his own specific parameters. In the end, this Ruler would find that way...and then die before he could properly bring it to function throughout the unverse, all at the hands of a man who gave up his own beliefs to kill him. * An obedient child who is proud of his heritage and just wants to make his selfish father proud of ''him''. [[spoiler:Pride from ''Fullmetal Alchemist''.]]

* A no-nonsense security officer, he has to put up with a bumbling prison warden, prisoners who are definitely hiding a big secret, and a head of state who is handling IdiotBall after IdiotBall. When he tries to protect what's left of the townspeople and get rid of said "hero", he's accused of being DrunkWithPower. Then he finds out that his gods are not all that they've made themselves out to be (and are, in fact, quite useless) and [[BalefulPolymorph he gets turned into a rat]]. * A brilliant and respected nuclear physicist refuses to give up on his goal of producing clean and plentiful energy--even after narrowly surviving a workplace accident, losing his beloved wife, and being vilified, ostracized, and pursued as a "criminal" by a vigilante who won't even show his real face. * All he wants to do is become king and replace the corrupt and ineffectual rulers who got his homeland into a brutal war in the first place. While he betrayed his friends to do so, they were planning on abandoning him and his noble cause to pursue their own selfish interests. The one hit hardest by the betrayal, his best friend and second-in-command, was a sociopath who only knew how to kill and took clear enjoyment in slaughtering people weaker than himself. * He wants the world to be a better place and actively tries to accomplish his dream. While he is a remorseless killer, he only killed those who either deserved it or got in his way. He admitted that he was not perfect and had no place in the world he was trying to create. His main foe was a man who was hiding two criminals with knowledge of government secrets, and who not only made no attempt to improve his personality, but actively embraced his worst flaws. * Perhaps the greatest strategist in the Empire's history, he set out with his brothers to challenge the Gods themselves and save the Empire from a devastating drought. The goddess who could have ended the drought refused to aid humanity, and he was forced to fight against her and her legions of fanatical devotees. During the battle, his brothers were killed. He defeated the selfish goddess, ended the drought, and saved his people, only for the Emperor to declare him a traitor and put his family to death. Nonetheless, he took an orphaned child of his enemies, raised the child as his own, and lived a peaceful life in obscurity for the next twenty years, all the while planning to one day bring perfect order to his chaotic nation. * A half-breed despised by both races he descended from, he took over his father's prestigious position in the church, gaining respectability from that station. Underwent a terrible pilgrimage at a young age so that his beloved, dying mother would always be with him in spirit. After this lifetime of sorrow, he swore to put an end to suffering in the world, only to be taken down by the woman he married. [[spoiler: Seymour, ''Final Fantasy X'']]
* A group of people, horribly mutated to the point of being unable to fit in with humanity, seek to put a stop to the manipulative bastard who did it to them so he can't destroy anyone else. [[spoiler: The Brotherhood of Evil, ''Doom Patrol'']]
* She is the long-serving, legitimate ruler of an empire that is crumbling around her, despite her best attempts to hold it together. Billions of souls are directly in her care, and she always does her best to watch over them. When she discovers a power source that would save her people, she is constantly prevented from obtaining it. The mercenaries she hires to aid her thinly-stretched armies often turn out to be incompetent or betray her, leaving her to confront her enemies alone. Said enemies are usually led by a vengeful cyborg, trying to wrestle away one of the souls in her care by force. [[spoiler: The Queen of the Crowns, ''Galaxy Rangers'']].
* A historian and philosopher, she saw the pointlessness of a war fought for 25,000 years between religious factions after having served both. She sought to purge the galaxy of the evil entity behind the conflict and break its will, freeing the galaxy from its endless tyranny. She took many students over the years, and all betrayed her in the end. Her final and greatest finally killed her - dooming the galaxy to more of the evil she spent her life trying to destroy. * A hard-working manager who tries everything he can think of to keep his unmotivated employees working. Said employees are usually working hard at sabotaging him. [[spoiler: The pointy-hared manager, ''Dilbert'']]

* Believing that the world was past saving, this man made an elaborate DealWithTheDevil to prevent another horror like the World War. * An environmental protection agent, he had no time for nonsense like the supernatural, seeing a web of elaborate fraud and parlor tricks set up by three disgraced professors to make a quick buck off the people of New York. As an adult, he created highly individual works of performance art to get his long-lost brother's attention, knowing that they shared an interest in that medium, and met a woman (who happened to be his brother's foster sister) who he wanted to spend his life with. However, his brother abandoned him for a sham life of denying his interests, and ''[[spoiler:killed him]]''! [[spoiler:Brian Mosier - the Ice Truck Killer - from Dexter S1.]]

* Despite the exile of his superior, he rallied those who were still loyal and plotted to take down the elitist immortals who ruled the kingdom. Failing to do that, he used his enemies' own desires to trap them in a never-ending addiction to precious metal. Even when his body was destroyed by a mortal who was brainwashed into siding with the oppressors, he still fought to bring the world under his eye and save it from conformity. * An energy being born of the corpse of a slain creature, she searches the universe in order to drain dangerous radioactive substances from planets that shouldn't even have these substances in the first place. Eventually, she takes control of this race and steers them in a brighter direction, away from meaningless piracy and towards glory. He even allows his family to join him in his groundbreaking endeavors, which include giving a body to a green ghost in need and cleansing the sewers of a gluttonous black blob who has a habit of eating the locals. * A warrior chief, who united his people and attacked {{The Empire}}. Under his charismatic command, his army, unstoppable on a regular battlefield, defeated the imperial army...until they were finally caught in a trap and buried by the thousands. Left for dead, he nevertheless survived, and aided by [[TheMagnificentSevenSamurai his six men still alive]] and his pet falcon, he proceeded to the imperial palace in order to kill the tyrant, an act he nearly achieved. Alas, an imperial soldier had seen him. The imperials then sneaked past his men by treachery, cooked his pet, and got him, since he was an expert swordman, killed in an exploding trap after taking his sword. * An unjustly imprisoned religious leader who has united people of all creeds, races, and nationalities. A patron of the arts and sciences who inspired a movement combining traditional and classical media with highly imaginative modernist imagery, as well as several surprising revelations which could herald a revolution in humanity's understanding of the field of mathematics. * He works for an ungrateful boss and his JerkAss co-worker taunts him on a regular basis. A sweet young girl who sees good in him when no one else is able to falls in love with him. It takes him awhile, but he finally realizes he feels the same about her. He's just about ready to turn his back on the evil organization he was once loyal to, but is then cruelly killed by one of his own former allies. He dies in the arm of the girl he's come to love, with his last words being an apology that they'll never be able to go on that date they made earlier and a declaration that he was glad to have met her. * After his kind discovers an energy source that defies the Law of Conservation of Energy, he and his fellows set out to harvest that source in order to stave off the heat death of the universe. The side-effects of this process are negligible enough to be unnoticeable even on a national scale, let alone a global or universal scale. Scrupulously honest, there's no evidence that he's ever told a lie. Finally, he goes about his business with an unfailingly cheerful demeanour. Oh, and he [[MemeticMutation really, really loves entropy. Maybe you've heard of it?]] [[spoiler: Kyuubey, ''PuellaMagiMadokaMagica''.]]
** All she wants is a plate of cheese. [[spoiler: Charlotte, ''PuellaMagiMadokaMagica''.]]
* A young prince who actively implements his father's policies in the province he has been charged with governing. He is also a dedicated patron of the arts and, indeed, an artist himself, and beloved of the most significant section of his people. Moreover, he loves his family dearly, particularly a certain half-brother and half-sister of his (despite the fact that he always lost to that same half-brother, several years his junior, at chess), whose tragic deaths motivate him for the rest of his life. Sadly found himself in over his head after a group of terrorists stole a top-secret research project, though he did his best to recover the project and minimise its exposure to the general populace. At this point, though, he was assassinated by a masked terrorist who went on to effectively destroy the prince's entire nation. [[spoiler: Clovis la Britannia, ''CodeGeass''.]]

* A prodigy who sacrifices his entire career in the military and, ultimately, his life, in order to avenge the torture and rape of his best friend (and possible LoveInterest). Always has a smile on his face. Went out trying to assassinate the BigBad of the series, and arguably came closer to doing so than anyone else to date. [[spoiler: Ichimaru Gin, ''{{Bleach}}''.]]
* An incredibly talented young man whose entire life was centred around self-improvement. Beloved of most of his colleagues, particularly his immediate subordinate, for his ineffably gentle and scholarly manner. Ultimately [[DefectorFromDecadence defected]] from the corrupt, militarist government of his home in order to spread the gifts of sentience and order to a race of beings the aforementioned militarist government have long exterminated on sight. Was, in the end, defeated by the machinations of a fellow scientist with good cause to be jealous, whose only other motivation was [[StatusQuoIsGod the preservation of the status quo]]; he fittingly [[ShutUpHannibal calls said fellow scientist out]] on this. Though speculated by TheHero to be extremely lonely, he never let this show and maintains a calm, pleasant demeanour almost to the end. [[spoiler: Aizen Sousuke, again of ''{{Bleach}}''.]]
* A brilliant young man who seized power in a virtually bloodless coup d'état with the intention of abolishing the imperialist, SocialDarwinist regime that had previously prevailed in TheEmpire which spanned roughly a third of the world's land surface; despite fierce resistance from its aristocracy, he succeeded. Eventually managed to unite the entire world under his rule, thus ending the wars that had plagued it for centuries, only to be assassinated at the height of his power by a terrorist previously presumed dead. [[spoiler: Emperor Lelouch vi Britannia, of ''CodeGeass'', from an in-universe perspective.]]

** And, finally, in the third route, he is beaten to death by the now-swordzombie protagonist in a futile attempt to stop said 'hero' from killing a baby and destroying the Holy Grail. This is particularly cruel as he had, not four days ago, saved the lives of the protagonist, his little sister, and his love interest, before fighting off a legendary assassin and a Complete Monster of a magus made of flesh-eating rape worms AFTER having his heart crushed by said assassin. All hail [[spoiler: Kotomine Kirei]], the poor, betrayed [[spoiler: priest of FateZero and FateStayNight]].

* A young warrior who tried to protect a powerful gem to keep it out of the hands of two irresponsible young soldiers. He took it upon himself to fight the young soldiers to prevent them from being allowed to awaken a sleeping mecha that would destroy the world. [[spoiler:Green from Gunstar Heroes]]

* A seemingly cold and distant man who, after having a falling out with his daughter, aims to help a young man achieve his lifelong goal. [[spoiler:Arkham, DevilMayCry 3]]

* A RebelliousPrincess raised in a DeadlyDecadentCourt of [[AristocratsAreEvil evil aristocrats]] and genocidal maniacs ruled over by a [[NietzscheWannabe nihilistic monarch]], this young woman was able to [[CallingTheOldManOut defeat her father]] [[XanatosGambit at his own game]], and has proven time and again her willingness to do whatever it takes to ensure her people's survival in a world in a constant state of war between various [[AncientConspiracy Ancient Conspiracies]] and CosmicHorror {{Eldritch Abomination}}s while simultaneously attempting to improve diplomatic relations with a group of people who the overwhelming majority of her contemporaries consider to be subhuman, all while struggling to keep the [[EnemyWithin monster within herself]] under control. [[spoiler:Lara Raith, ''The Dresden Files''.]]

* A lonely, near-omnipotent, immortal being with [[CreepyCrossdresser excellent taste in fashion]] who has dedicated his life and powers to helping three very special little girls. He has taught them many lessons, including why not to fight, and how to face their fears. He gave them lots of candy on their birthday, and brought their [[EnsembleDarkhorse dearly beloved]] half-brothers back from the dead. However no-one seems to understand his good intentions due to his creepy appearance and possible schizophrenia. He is so feared that no one will talk to him if they can avoid it, so not only does he have no friends, but no one ever got to know him long enough to learn his name.
