* There are numerous shout-outs to ''Film/BackToTheFuture'' in several episodes involving time travel. From "In The Beginning", a season four episode: Dean asks Castiel if angels have [=DeLoreans=], and Dean and John both turn when someone calls "Hey, Winchester!". There were also some more subtle references, such as Azazel posing as a doctor named Brown.
** "The Song Remains the Same", from season five, was originally supposed to be called "Back to the Future II." It seems to have been changed because they had issues acquiring the rights to use the title. This didn't stop Dean from saying Castiel was like a [=DeLorean=] without any plutonium.
** Finally, in "Frontierland", from season six ([[OnceASeason noticing a pattern?]]), is loaded with ''Film/BackToTheFuture'' references, as you'd expect in an episode where Sam and Dean travel back in time to the Wild West. Their aliases are "[[WalkerTexasRanger Walker]]" and "[[Creator/ClintEastwood Eastwood]]". ''The episode ends with a WriteBackToTheFuture''.
** Also, in "Time After Time", Dean is accidentally hurled back into the past and has one of the happiest moments of his life getting to meet and work with one of his idols, [[spoiler:Eliot Ness of TheUntouchables]]. In order to get out of it and give Sam the information he needs to take down the episode's villain, [[spoiler:Chronos]], he gets blissfully happy when he realizes he can [[spoiler:"pull a Back To The Future II", WriteBackToTheFuture and plant a letter in a floorboard of the house he knows Sam is staying in, alerting him to its existence by scrawling Sam's name on the baseboard it's hidden in.]]

* "The French Mistake" is a Film/BlazingSaddles reference. The title itself is a multi-level reference, initally suggesting the MelBrooks joke of his WildWest universe utterly decimating the FourthWall. The second level of the title gag is specific to the fight spilling onto the real movie studio's lot, interrupting the filming of several other movies. One being a Busby Berkely-type 1930's musical filming a song called "The French Mistake", which is not even a slightly-veiled ode to guy-on-guy sex. Many fans of the show are of a younger demographic that has not seen BlazingSaddles, and therefore didn't get all the levels and the reference to the long-running MistakenForGay gag hidden the episode's title.

Not a correct use of this trope, sorry.

* They also did a few mixed in with {{fanservice}} for the slashers/"Wincesters" in ''Bugs''. The boys were mistaken as a couple, Dean calls Sam "honey" and pats him on the arse. It would all be rather wonderful if it wasn't for the quality of the episode.
** Wait, a shoutout in Bugs? But that's only episode 8 of the first season. How can they be shouting out to the Wincesters so soon? Later episodes with the mistaking for a couple, more arguable.
*** The first Wincest fic apparently appeared within hours of the first episode being aired, according to the Supernatural Wiki...
** "The Monster at the End of this Book" had Sam and Dean discover Wincest Fanfiction:
---> '''Dean''': There's Sam girls and Dean girls. And what's a slash fan?
---> '''Sam''': As in... Sam slash Dean. Together.
---> '''Dean''': Like... "together" together?
---> '''Sam''': Yeah.
---> '''Dean''': ...They do know we're brothers, right?
---> '''Sam''': It doesn't seem to matter.
---> '''Dean''': Ah, come on. That's... that's just sick.
