Changed one of Cole\'s references- \"never trust an elf\" is a well known meme from Shadowrun, so the shout out more properly nods toward that game rather than Lord of the Rings

* The codex entries for some creatures such as the quillback and bogwalker very obviously and [[PlayedForLaughs hilariously]] parody the style of a CosmicHorrorStory. My mistake - Hera is Greek, Juno is the Roman equivalent.

* Dorian's family betrothed him to a young woman named Livia Herathinos, before he fled Tevinter. He mentions that she is extremely intelligent and scathing as well as beautiful, and was about as keen on the engagement as he was. A clever, sarcastic Livia in a setting that strongly resembles ancient Rome complete with poison and backstabbing as a national sport (she even has a Roman goddess in her surname) , about to be married off to an unsatisfactory husband... [[Literature/IClaudius perhaps Dorian dodged a bullet in more ways than one]].

* Averted in regards to ''Monty Python'': According to WordOfGod in the process of development, they've made so many [[MontyPythonsFlyingCircus "No one expects the Spanish Inquisition"]] jokes that they're entirely tired of the reference and won't be making one in the game proper. Though a different ''Monty Python'' shout-out shows up at the Keep in the Western Approach, where a DrillSergeantNasty asks recruits what the main weapon of the Inquisition is.
-->'''Recruit 1''': Surprise!\\
'''Recruit 2''': Fear!\\
'''Recruit 3''': Really nice clothes!
** There's just one very sneaky example when the party enters Redcliffe village. A scout reports that "No one was expecting us."
* During his banter with Sera about [[FastballSpecial throwing her]], Iron Bull raises the possibility of [[Film/LordOfTheRings throwing the resident dwarf instead]].
* At one point during Cole's banters with Vivienne after his last personal quest, he refers to his resistance to being bound as "unbowed, unbent, and unbroken," the house words of [[Literature/ASongOfIceAndFire House Martell]]. Also probably an ActorAllusion, given that Vivienne's voice actress played Oberyn Martell's mistress in ''Series/GameOfThrones''.
* One of Krem's stories of previous jobs with the Iron Bull is about "me, him and five other guys" defending a village from bandits and being paid in rice, a nod to ''Film/SevenSamurai''. Bull can mention it as well (he's bitter).
* The codex entry for the Orlesian city of Serault refers to its glassworks "with beauty all but the sunless see". SunlessSea is a game made by Failbetter Games, who also made Dragon Age: The Last Court which takes place in Serault.
* Many of the cryptic comments Cole makes are {{Shout Out}}s to films and other video games, mainly by [[InvokedTrope invoking]] ItWasHisSled (and one of his comments even references [[Film/CitizenKane the trope namer]]).
* The [[VideoGame/PlantsVsZombies Plants Vs. Corpses]] book in Crestwood. The nearby field also looks like a level from the game.
* Crestwood, a town that has been re-built after the original was flooded several years before hand [[spoiler: by a person of authority]], it's now filled with ghosts, and the main character needs to use a dam to clear the flood, and explore the ruins of the previous version of the town, distinguished by referring to it as the "old" version. Change Crestwood to Tien's Landing and it's VideoGame/JadeEmpire all over again.
* Fittingly, Dorian has a few ''Literature/ThePictureOfDorianGray'' references around him. A letter from a friend describes him as a "hothouse orchid" - the orchid was one of Oscar Wilde's favourite symbols of Decadence in ''Dorian Gray''.
* The codex entries for some creatures such as the quillback and bogwalker very obviously and [[PlayedForLaughs hilariously]] parody the style of a CosmicHorrorStory. (Of the quillback, he says "Master means that it's pointy.")
* During War Table banter, Cullen can discuss calibrating the trebuchets. Josephine asks [[VideoGame/MassEffect2 how many times he's going to do that]].
* In the Exalted Plains, there's a broken bridge that opens up a minor quest to repair it. If Varric is in your party at the time he will give "a very large and vehement 'no'" to anyone who suggests tossing him over to the other side. [[Film/TheLordOfTheRings Nobody tosses a dwarf]].
* Fittingly Vivienne's companion quest to kill a white wyvern is called [[SnowWhite Bring Me the Heart of Snow White]].
* In the Trophy Room of the Winter Palace (and a few other locations), there's a [[Franchise/MassEffect krogan]] head stuffed and mounted on the wall.
* The quest, "Call Me Imshael", references the first line in the first chapter of ''Literature/MobyDick''.
