The problem begins when she wants to keep being his plus one to the country club he's a member of but doesn't want to hurt his feelings too much that he stops inviting her. So Maggie tries subtly emphasizing how she and him are ''[[LetsJustBeFriends friends]]''. The signals are not received and everyone at the club, including Melvin, thinks that they're a couple, culminating in Maggie yelling "I'M NOT YOUR GIRLFRIEND!" in front of everyone.
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Chowder}}'': "Chowder's Girlfriend" was devoted to Chowder, who is very much in the "girls have cooties" stage, trying to convince Panini that ''he's not her boyfriend!'' From that episode onward, it's his immediate response if she so much as says "Hi!" to him. Naturally, the series finale [[spoiler:depicts Chowder being married to her.]]

Oddly, most likely due to serialized series and a tendency to be aired "out of order", it's his response to her in the first aired episode as well. Even more strangely, at the end of the series [[spoiler:Chowder is married to her... or so Panini would lead the audience to believe.]]

When Betty finds out her best friend Noah has been kidnapped, Sparky makes a quip about going to save her "boyfriend", which prompts her to respond with this trope. Also comes with the obligatory ShipTease during the rescue of someone they think is Noah (but is actually a disguised infiltrator).

* Given the amount of LovesMyAlterEgo, TwoPersonLoveTriangle, ''and'' ShipTease going on in ''WesternAnimation/MiraculousLadybug'', this trope comes up. Marinette, as Ladybug, values Cat Noir as a partner, but is turned off by his constant flirtations, and typically objects when people assume they are a couple. Cat Noir's civilian identity Adrien likes Marinette enough, but when asked, he insists that they are "JustFriends". Essentially, both teens are crushing on each other while at the same keeping the object of their affections in the Friend Zone ''without realizing it''.
* The sentence on its own isn't even enough for Jenny in Sheldon's first appearance on ''WesternAnimation/MyLifeAsATeenageRobot'':

* Hilariously played in a HoYay situation by Ren in ''WesternAnimation/RenAndStimpyAdultPartyCartoon'' episode "Ren Seeks Help". Ren decides to go to a psychologist and speak about his problems with controlling anger and thus his psychical and physical abuse of Stimpy. He starts with his childhood, [[AllPsychologyIsFreudian naturally]], and when he gets to the point of meeting Stimpy, he says a few words and then promptly stops.

* Tommy from ''WesternAnimation/RobotBoy'' doesn't like it when people call Lola his girlfriend.

* In the "Bro-Down Showdown" episode of ''WesternAnimation/SonicBoom'', Eggman refers to Amy as Sonic's girlfriend. Sonic denies it, but the game show they're both on indicates a wrong answer. Technically, it was because Sonic and Eggman's answers didn't match, but the timing of the "wrong answer" light is still very suspect.

* ''WesternAnimation/SpongBobSquarePants'': Patrick has to go undercover (because he thinks someone is going to kick him out of town), so he dresses up as "Patricia". [=SpongeBob=] has to tell a few folks "she" isn't his girlfriend.

* Used in one episode of ''WesternAnimation/WolverineAndTheXMen2009'' where Nightcrawler and the Scarlet Witch are kidnapped and trapped in a huge dome with woods inside, which is being watched by the BigBad... [[Film/TheHungerGames gee, that sounds familiar...]]

* In ''WesternAnimation/BatmanTheBraveAndTheBold'', Batman acts this way towards [[DatingCatwoman Catwoman]]. "My interest in her is solely about [[IsThatWhatTheyreCallingItNow rehabilitation]]." By the end of the battle, she's slipped him her phone number.
